Almost all of us look back fondly on the PS2 era of video games, remembering games we regard as classics.
Every previous generation has them, and we always go back to them.
I'm curious though, what games from this past generation will we regard as classics? Games we will look back on when we get bored of all the new stuff that's coming out.

I've been trying to think of this myself and come up with few other than some odd personal choices. Such as Far Cry 3. It was one of the few games where I truly felt free to do as I please in an open world, where just exploring the world itself led to unscripted events that felt dynamic and exciting.

Mass Effect, even with the ending to 3 (which I fixed for my game by installing MEHEM) it was a great series. too bad I will never buy another EAware game.

Mass Effect Happy Ending Mod, it fixes the ending. there should be a youtube video or two of it. it can be a bit choppy at times as it takes clips from other games, as well as some original content that the creator made, but it is still massively better than the "real" ending.

Lost Odyssey. In my opinion, a better Final Fantasy, than the actual Final Fantasy we got in the seventh gen, XIII. Blue Dragon was also good. Almost like Dragon Quest. Hmm.what else? Xenoblade Chronicles is definitely a cult classic. I also really liked Resonance of Fate. I find RPGs tend to stick out the most when looking back on previous console generations.

Valkyria Chronicles: Between it's unique blend of turn based strategy, third person shooter, and real time strategy, the awesome story, memorable cast of characters, and the beautiful art style and level design. This game is an underrated gem in the PS3's library.

Xenoblade Chronicles is also up there for me. It's packed to the brim with content, with an interesting story and setting to boot.

Journey, while only about 2 hours long, was a very beautiful experience. The way you interact with other players is so engaging. You can't directly talk to people, but you can "sing" to each other, and you definitely feel attached to them as you journey with them throughout the game's beautiful landscapes. (no pun intended)

Fallout: New Vegas: Probably one of the most ambitious WRPG's I've played. With all the different ways to play the game, the various factions you can join, the amount of awesome and well written characters you can interact with, how well the game handles the lore and backstory of the original two games. Fallout New Vegas, despite some technical issues, definitely shines for me.

And despite ME3's less than spectacular ending, the entire Mass Effect series really knew how to world build, and the vast majority of the characters were well fleshed out and very likable. I remember playing through Mass Effect 2 alone at least 6 or 7 times because I just loved dealing with my squadmates in various ways. In a way, the series itself was also pretty ambitious, with all the different choices you can make and being able to transfer them throughout the series, the series was definitely building up to something big. Even though in the end it did fall pretty short, I still have to appreciate what the series set out to do.

I thought that about Fallout NV too. I liked the part where you could very well choose no sides at all and basically gun down everyone in the end.

Beautiful access to choices, something BioWare promised in the ME series and failed... which is probably why it turned out the way it did. Lack of choice. You want a bad and terrible ending full of dark demeanor and apocalyptic fallout? Good -- If you want a pretty heroic ending with the main character victorious? Good.

Even though additions to the formula introduced in the sequels have divided players somewhat. I'd say the first Gears of War is a good candidate to be considered a classic one day. It wasn't the first action game to use a cover mechanic, but it arguably popularized that gameplay feature on an unprecedented scale.

Also, the first Gears was IMHO, along with a string of other shooters released roughly during the same time period, partly contributing in breaking a hegemony held for several years by games like Battlefield where wide open spaces, comparatively high player numbers, and vehicles characterized gameplay. GoW's multiplayer component had relatively few participants in each match, engaging each other on decidedly smaller maps, and no vehicles to speak of. Yet it still attracted a sizable audience. Now, I'm not saying it constitutes a be-all-end-all experience, nor do I endorse certain players fixation with the Gnasher, but I'd still say that the first Gears stands as an example of taking already well-tried concepts and reinventing it for a new generation of hardware.

Dark Souls, I guess.

Not my absolute favourite, but its impact and the fanbase it's established is undeniable.

And Mass Effect, though obviously not every reason for it's status as "classic" is a possitive one.

Dark Souls. An amazing game with so much depth, it's incredible. It's really hard to describe - you just have to spend some time with the game to really see what it is all about.

X-Com. I hate - I repeat - I hate turn based strategy video games, but I bought it on a whim after listening to a Matt Lees podcast, and I love this game and consider it one of the best of the generation. Mechanics aside, what sets this game apart is your story in XCom will be unique. You will grow attached to certain characters and remember certain missions. When everything starts going wrong in the mission is when Xcom stands head and shoulders above other games.

I'm pretty confident that The Last of Us, Dark Souls, Red Dead Redemption and Batman: Arkham Asylum / Arkham City will be remain the critical darlings they are currently.

Valkyria Chronicles remains one of the greatest games no one ever played, it'll definitely live on as a cult classic, if not a proper classic.

other than that... hmm... only time will tell, I guess. I didn't know when I watched cartoons as a kid or played spyro when I was a bit older that the things I encountered would become classics... in a way it feels like the decision to make them so wasn't really mine. XD

Mass Effect franchise
Batman: Arkham Asylum & Arkham City (not Origins, because it was lame)

EDIT: I forgot Assassin's Creed 2 and the Metro franchise.

Dark souls: Whatever your opinion on the game lets face it with a few thousand community members out there its at least a cult classic. IMO is also an artistic masterpiece that will be remembered for decades as a true classic

Fallout 3: There will always be some contention on the players who like Fallout 3 and the players who like Fallout new vegas more. I happen to like fallout 3 more but both games are great. Fallout 3 is a little more ahead due to its excellent characters, immersive atmosphere and terrain, and most of all a really good story about trying to fix a dying land

DayZ: The first game (well mod to a game) that brought us a zombie apocolypse that actually feels like a zombie apocolypse. It also had the pleasure of introducing Arma 2 to me and a lot of gamers that had never played the game before. It also introduced the beauty of modding to a new generation of gamers that thought modding was just cosmetic changes (sadly that thought is maintained by out of touch executives within the industry)

Divinity: Original sin: Im not sure if you classify a PC exclusive as gen 7 but it came out around the same time. I think Divinity is going to be a classic in the sense of its how all future top down RPGs should be done.

The last of us: I consider the last of us a great story with sub par gameplay, mostly due to the fact that the locked framerate made it very hard for me to play. However it doesnt change the fact that its a critically acclaimed game and I think it'll be remembered as a classic for years to come

Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed, Demon's Souls, No More Heroes... I can only go about the games I played myself though.
