Why are they there?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining (most of the time), but it strikes me as odd that they need to be in there at all.
I get it with "passionate love scene" type situations, but I question why they have to show it in such a clearly-meant-to-be-erotic way.
I mean, I could just go on certain websites if I wanted that kinda...stuff.
Again, don't real into this that I hate naked scenes, I just think they can be a bit crude
A lot of the time sex is in a film because market research has shown that people above the age of puberty like to see sex in films. But that's not the only reason.
Sometimes a sex scene is absolutely central to the plot and must be shown. I saw a film recently called "Princess" which is about a child growing up around the environment of the adult entertainment industry (one of the only non-misogynistic animes I've ever seen - probably because it comes from Europe). The sex scenes in this film, although frequently disturbing, were essential - the story of the film simply could not have been told without them.
Sometimes a sex scene is in a film because the actors wanted it there, because those actors wanted to have a sex scene for whatever reason. I know a film that was shot recently where two actors improvised a sex scene that wasn't even in the script because they liked each other(!), and another where the lead actress negotiated with the director to
put more sex into the script to make it a more realistic characterisation. It's always a big mistake to assume that actors and actresses are against nudity and sex and are "being exploited".
Sex can be crude, but then life is crude. Life isn't PG or R rated, life is rated X. The best films are the ones that touch the audience the deepest (either through laughter, sorrow, action, or whatever) and one way to really reach out and connect with people on a deep emotional gut level is to show things
how they really are. This includes sex, among many other things.
