Sexual Preferences

so I've been thinking about the whole Straight, Gay, Bi, Pan, A, etc. thing. We use it to classify who we're into.

The basis of those terms though has nothing to do with love, or emotions, it has to deal with strictly sexual preference. Everything we say about it has to deal with emotions.


So...

Without any emotions, love, etc. what really defines someone as a Lesbian instead of Bisexual, or a heterosexual from someone who's gay when talking strictly sex? In its most basic definition, does the sexual preference of a gay man imply that he doesn't like vaginal intercourse, or that a heterosexual female strictly only likes said intercourse an no other forms?


Without labeling different orientations, I'm asking you today Escapist.

Really what he said. I get that some guys are attractive, but not in such a way that I would want to have sex with them. I'm very sexually attracted to women so that's what I go with

There is little evidence that physical gratification has any bearing on how we choose mates in the greater scheme of things. Even aesthetics can be tied to emotional and social ideas at least as strongly as what one finds most physically gratifying, and more importantly, emotions and social ideas possibly have more of an impact on what we find physically gratifying than aesthetics. Feelings and society will always have a larger impact on sexual orientation than anything else. Sexual orientation is inherently subjective.

EDIT: Made a couple of changes now that I re-read the OP a couple times.
I switched sexual preference with orientation when I re-read the corresponding section of my sociology book. I'll also make it known that I tend towards the nurture side of the argument on this issue, mostly because the scientific evidence saying that sexual orientation is all biological are very questionable at best and borderline ignorant at worst.
