well, the decision has been taken out of my hands for the time being. I just got back from my local games shop, and they're sold out of SF4 for both consoles :) haha.

I am definately leaning towards the PS3 though, and I might pick up a copy from a different store on the way home this afternoon... as long as they're not sold out too.

hey, one more thing, I noticed that on the back of the PS3 version, the screen resolution says 720p, but the xbox screen resolution says 1080p. Would the difference be noticable and should I factor this in when trying to decide which version to buy? I do have a full HD 1080p LCD TV, so I want the best quality that I can get.
Just try turning off everything save 1080p in the PS3 video settings. It will probably upscale the PS3 really should have had a built in upscaler....

Are you saying this from your actual experience? From what I can tell, the PS3 does not upscale it's graphics at all. If it says 720p on the back of the box, then my TV displays it in 720p, end of story. I think the only PS3 game I have which actually displays in full 1080p, is Gran Turismo.

PS3

I'm sorry, but the Xbox controller is GOD AWFUL for fighting games

But that's my opinion, honestly, get the version that your friends are getting

It depends on your tv and the game but I know for a fact that some games will upscale when you do what I said earlier. I get Mirror's Edge to upscale to 1080i (I don't have a 1080p set) this way.

I bought the game on the PS3 today. Both versions are absolutely the same. It just depends on what console YOU want to play it on...

For me, I went for PS3 because that damn 360 DPad is HORRIBLE.

So, the question is, should I get it for Xbox 360 or for PS3?

I think that the PS3 controller may be more suitable for this kind of game, but I really like Xbox achievements, so I'm not sure which console to buy for.

Thoughts?
Would the Achievements be the same as the Trophies. Your gamerscore will go up and wouldn't you also want your PS3 standing to go up?

Really, it's probably up to the friends you play with and controller preference.
I hope you get a copy, though. Good luck.

Does not matter, both controls are horrible to play SF 4 whit.

I suggest get some more cash and buy the arcade sticks.

I've noticed a few that say they'll only display at 720p but actually display at 1080p, couldn't tell you why though.
There'll be barely any difference between the two, if the do display at different levels, I wouldn't let that affect your descision too much.

I think I'd go for the PS3 version, because of the D-Pad mostly but also because I dislike achievements and just generally dislike my Xbox.

It's certainly looking that way :)

I picked up a copy for PS3 last night. It's pretty awesome, I'm pretty shit though. was getting better after a couple of hours. The graphics style looks fantastic in action. Even my missus commented on them.

I did have some success using the analogue stick, but ultimately it's not accurate enough and the d-pad makes it a bit easier, but I can't use it for too long without my thumb getting sore!

Still considering swapping it for a 360 copy. I love achievements and gamerscore. I dunno, it's just like a representation of your gaming history and I've really enjoyed building up the score. I'm not obsessive, like I rarely 100% games, but I enjoy the ones that I do get. PS3 trophy's just don't have the same appeal, and I've only had my PS3 for a couple of months, so don't have many anyway.

thanks for your comments everyone. If you want a crack at me on PSN, my Escapist forum name is the same as my PSN name (and XBL). You'll probably win cause I'm really crap.

As a lot of people have said, its really up to which control you prefer and which console you have most online friends on. All the xbox fanboys saying its better on live, and vice versa (not that ive seen any sony fanboys flaming here), have no argument due to both services offering a damn near similar package

And now for me - I haven't owned a fighting game since Soul Calibur II, back when they weren't being totally shameless. Is there enough substance to Street Fighter IV that I can play it and get some decent value out of it without memorising three pages of combo inputs?
Define "decent value"?

Yeah, I think there probably is. I'm not a huge fighting game fan, but I think if you've ever enjoyed any Street Fighter game, then you will probably enjoy this one. There's a fair bit of nostalgia but it seems to have quite a deep combat system, easy to learn, but difficult to master.

I just can't beat that Sagat dude... really pi$$ing me off... and I'm playing on easy...

I'd say get the PS3 version, only because the D-Pad is better. But really, the games are identical, and if you can get the money together get an arcade stick.

Don't worry about an abundance of pages, there's only one page with the moves on it, and they are very simple moves. The trick is learning when to use the moves in combination of each other instead of relying on one god move.

I went with the 360 version because I play with the thumbstick, not the D-pad. and playing with the thumbstick on the Ps3 is not as easy as it is on the 360. Plus I know more people with the 360 then the Ps3. But it all comes down to what you really want. Your gonna get a good game no matter which one you buy.
