And you know what is my "favourite" part of the article? This:

Shyamalan defended his film from the seemingly endless bouts of disapproval in an article by IGN. He explained his motives behind his own interpretation of the series that clearly was below the expectation of regular audiences.

He said, "It's really weird because on the show the average age was, like, nine-years-old... My child was nine-years-old. So you could make it one of two ways. You could make it for that same audience, which is what I did -- for nine and 10-year-olds -- or you could do the Transformers version and have Megan Fox. I didn't do that... Those kids, it's for them. It was for them, to talk about mysticism and Eastern philosophies through a 10-year-old's vernacular."

He added that creating a kid's show into a mature, adult-oriented film would be like "a betrayal of the innocence of the piece".

Stop it, you hack. So it's either teletubbies or Megan Foxes naked body? Is that what you want to say?

OK, and even IF it was only for kids. Do you really, TRULY think that 9-year olds cannot understand being raised by an abusive father, or being not accepted in a club because you are different, or being expected to do something that is not in your heart, or being surrounded by talented people and feeling useless?

And evn IF it was only for kids. Do you really, TRULY think that kids are more interested in listening to how clumsily you handle the backstory then to see cool action scenes, or some light-hearted adventures?

Heck, I am not even talking about all the other bullshit.

I have no investment in Avatar or Korra, but I sincerely weep for those who do.

That false dichotomy he seems to have created in his head between a kid-focused film and a "mature" adaptation of a series hurts me physically.

Making excuses like this for the terrible films you make doesn't hold much water when there are dozens of films out there that successfully entertain children and adults like.

That statement form him, as well and the quality (or lack there of) of the first movie coupled with, well, most of his career, shows that The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable where flukes, and likely had the same situation that Chronicle did where the movie was good despite the director and not because of him.

It did make $319 million ( http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Last-Airbender-The#tab=summary ), however that doesn't mean it wasn't still absolutely shit. Tomatoes gave it a 6%, Metacritic only gave it a 20-30 (if I remember correctly), basically Shabamalama-sama took all the lore and world building from the series and pissed all over it. It had nothing to do with the story being too "childish".

I really wish Hollywood would wise up and stop giving this fucking hack work.

Buuuuuut then again, I completely lost all faith in Hollywood a lllloooonnnnggg time ago.

I've tried, but it's a cartoon and she can't allow herself to partake in such things, even if she has no objection to me enjoying them.

This is a point in which we agree to disagree, but she's not going to get on my case for enjoying cartoons, so I'm not going to get on her case for enjoying the butchered movie versions of said cartoons.

Oh how I loathe this news. I despise it. And I despise the entertainment industry's attitude of looking down on kids and dragging shows like this down with them. How come we appreciate kids so much and want to protect them from bad influences, but don't care if the entertainment we show to them has actual value? There is nothing "just" in kid's shows, they're possibly one of the most important shows out there since they are a very large part in the children's process of learning about the world and constructing their own worldview.

Edit: Oh, and how does Shyamalan justify making a movie "for kids" by sucking all of the joy and color out of the original series?

Actually, it didn't make much more than the cost of production plus promotion. Part of why they spent so much was they were committed to making a franchise.

I find this rather hard to swallow. No one liked the 2010 film. It was lambasted to shit everywhere you went. I don't remember anyone having anything good to say about it. The fanbase was pissed, the critics were pissed, the creators were pissed. If this is indeed true, and we will see a final product, it'll be a day to be alive. The internet will reveal rage not seen since the Mass Effect 3 ending. The message boards shall run red with blood, the monitors will blaze with dark flame, and the unholy harbingers of fan rage will descend upon Shamalaalmadingdong with an unholy fury only the gods themselves could match. Holy shit, I'm actually excited for it now, just to see the rage burn across the internet!
