Ah, the classic respond-to-criticisms-nobody-has-made-to-try-and-distract-for-the-fuckton-of-actual-damning-and-harsh-critcisms-made-by-virtually-everyone-who-saw-your-piece-of-shit-film gambit (which needs a shorter name by the way)

Well if he gets to make a sequel despite the fact that everybody hated it then it shows he can do whatever the fuck he wants and get away with it. We might get another so-terrible-it's-fascinating film like "Lady in the Water" if he's allowed to completely go off the fails.

Avatar 2: Electric Boogaloo

I know very little about the Avatar/Korra universe, but I know it is very popular and well-admired by most of those that do. Sorry guys... maybe Shamalamaman is determined to prove everyone's expectations wrong?

I know, I know, wishful thinking.

Never watched the show or the movie, but I've been on the internet long enough to know this is a TERRIBLE idea.

And I hate that argument that's basically 'well it's for kids, of course you didn't like it!' ************, being aimed at kids does not give you carte blanche to suck, Pixar movies are made for kids first and foremost and they're almost always great.

The ONLY silver lining of the first movie was how we didn't get to see how badly Chimmychangerlan would ruin Toph. YOU WILL NOT TOUCH HER YOU FIEND!

Also, the fuck does he mean, the first movie was for kids?! Does HIS kid spend 90% of her day rattling off banal exposition with no emotional investment whatsoever?!
You have captured, WITHOUT FAIL the exact, out loud, VERBAL reaction to reading this after the picosecond of it registering in my brain. Bravo.

Just... maybe it'll be better? Please!

We can hope against hope, but I highly doubt it. As his smug prattling proves, Boom Shakalackalan clearly doesn't understand WHY the show is so loved by people of all ages. I don't speak as a fanboy (although I am one). Adaptations aren't supposed to just copy their inspiration wholesale. There'd be no point to them if that was the case. Hell, even with Avatar there's improvements that an adaptation could make, but they HAVE to have the same soul at their core as the source material, and Gimmegimmegimmeamanalan After Midnight has no soul, at all.

At first I was confused and wondered why Shyamalan would be working on Avatar 2 instead of James Cameron, then I felt kind of stupid.

Why exactly is this man still legally allowed within 500m of an active film crew? Someone should file a restraining order on behalf of the art of cinema itself.
Jokes aside, I'm actually not bothered by this news (as someone who has never seen the show), although I do feel somewhat bad for those wishing to see a movie adaption that isn't pure shit from start to finish. Shyamalan's career is rather amusing to watch, and I'm constantly wondering just how bad he can get. Plus his movies reliably yield amusing reviews, so there's that, I guess.

You know, at first, I was just gonna be apathetic about this. If I were to get angry at every stupid decision that Hollywood makes, I'd be choking on aneurysm by now.

That said, the attitude coming out of him. Admit you made a bad film and let it be, don't try to half-assedly defend it, and especially not with an argument that bad. Used to think the reputation he gets is kinda harsh, but it's getting harder and harder to be sympathetic as time goes on.

Glad I'm not the only one. I thought the first one bombed so bad that my brain just could not believe that they would give this guy a second chance to screw things up again.

So basically his point is, "it' just for kids".
No attempt to even say this was good or that he tried his best to respect the source material.
Only "come on guys, I know it's shit but it's just for kids. It's fine to make it bad if it's just for kids".

I don't really know much about storytelling but the myth of "you don't have to try if it's for kids" has been pretty much shattered in the days of toy story, hunchback of notre dame and Up so all that statement says is that he's a bad storyteller who doesn't understand the basics.

Sounds about right.

This is one of those incredibly rare situations where you find yourself thinking "If only Michael Bay would swoop in and take over"

Honestly, making it transformers style and having Megan Fox in the movie couldn't possibly be worse than the dripping parvovirus-infested turd Shyamalan is going to squeeze out

Why is it that movie adaptations are always being given to people with no understanding or liking of the source material? Uwe Boll with video game movies, Michael Bay with Transformers, and now Shayamalan with Avatar. If you going to make an adaptation, put it in the hands of people who LIKE the original.

my biggest thing couldn't they have pronounced Aang's name like in the TV series
If I remember right, they didn't pronounce any of the main protagonists name right in the movie. But the Aang one was the worse.

Someone, please torch this film now...

I will do as I did with the first abomination: ignore it completely. But then I fear I will once again walk on my dad watching the damn thing and ridiculing the universe while he didn't see the animated series.

I'm at a loss of words. This is the lowest form of scraping the barrel, and we just had a Fantastic Four movie, so that's sayin' something.

And from Book 2 and on the show was definetly not for just kids only. Secret state police and torture, on top of the genocide, fun stuff. :D

Dear God, let's hope this won't come to pass. And Shyamalan's explanation will forever be insanely funny to me. It's a kid's show so we have to make the movie stupid and with logical inconsistencies because our only other choice is to make it rated R with sex and stuff.

Or, you know, you can actually follow the animated show and do that. Because it was for kids and was also enjoyed by all other age groups. Perhaps the creators who made a critically acclaimed show that received multiple awards actually knew what they were doing.

It shows Shyamalan didn't even watch the series. Or he did and understood nothing at all. He probably didn't even ask around about it to see how many people of various ages enjoyed it and for which reasons. Like, he can say that he watched it and I wouldn't believe him. There is simply no way that he ever came in contact with that material and understood it. And he certainly didn't understand the criticism of his movie.
