About Risky's Revenge. The Original release was in October of 2010. I don't know how much production value and tech WayForward had for that game. They improved a lot for Pirate's Curse though and I hope Half-Genie continues this progress.

Too bad that all the Kickstarter goals couldn't be reached. I would have loved to battle Nega-Shantae again.

Well Wayforward hasn't ruled the extra content out entirely, just not at launch. They have said that content stretch goals not reached could be implemented as DLC later on.

That is great!

I hope for more chapters. More game is what most people on this thread wanted for the previous games.

Wayforward is a good developer, and Shantae is basically their big IP. Many people dismiss the franchise without ever giving it a chance because Shantae is blatantly sexy. Many people take this as a signal that the game is inferior and just cashing in on sex appeal. Which is really to bad.
As business as usual, which is a real shame. It's maybe "blatantly sexy" but there are cultural connotations for that, people really like to ignore. She is a bellydancer after all.
Even claiming 'cultural connotations' are stretching it a bit. Very few of the other female characters in the game are also belly dancers and they're styled in a similar way.

When you get down to it, the reason the Shantae games are full of attractive, often scantily-clad ladies is because Way Forward just, likes making games about cute, attractive magical girls. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that.

Personally, I don't think sexualization is necessarily that much of a problem, but nonsensical sexualization and exploitation are. Shantae, her friends and her enemies are all designed in a sexualized way, but they're never actually exploited by the game. They have personality, and agency, and they're the ones who drive the action and the story. On top of that, everything is very clearly played for fun, the art style is pretty consistent throughout, and the actual gaming mechanics are fun and very well-executed.

Shantae *could* have just been cheesecake, and it *could* have been done in an exploitative sorta way. There's plenty of devs that do that. But Way Forward is a good enough studio to be able to pull of that art style in a way that is fun, upbeat and genuinely charming, and that just goes to show how much of a quality studio they are.

I actually voted for Shantae in Smash yesterday lol. I do think she would make an excellent smash character with a potentially very fun and unique moveset much more so than a large majority of the cast.

I voted for Midna first because I like that character but Shantae would be a much better fit.

People are asking for Bayonetta but I really dont feel she would fit smash now an Arc systems game hell yes probably even a French bread game as well.

Have they announced a release date for the new Shantae game yet? Because I cant find it if they have.

Best world would be having Shantae, Risky and the Pirate Master in Smash. Heck, put the Shovel Knight, the Enchantress and Ridley too.

Yeah, I am tripping.

Well, best hopes for Shantae. I have voted for her.

Well I already said I was specifically talking about Shantae in that situation.
Pretty much is a case of: She's a belly dancer, Consistent art style, and sexiness.

You have said it well:

The way I see it, when it comes to sexualization, (or any other element, when you think about it) the good reasons to put it in a game are.

1. The game wouldn't work without it. Basically, hentai/porn games like Hunie Pop. Or games where sex is important to the plot like dating sims or is the a theme.

2. The artist likes and loves it and put that element for his own joy.

3.It is tiltilation, but it is honest and upfront about it instead of giving flimsy excuses.
"You like sex/violence/chocolates we want money. We give you chocolates/sex/violence you give us money."

Still, it is slim but, not impossible.

Really, Plok is on the list? As far as esoteric 3rd party characters go, I'd figure Kuros or S.O.P.H.I.A. would have made the list long before Plok...

I like Shantae. I think Pirate's Curse is a good game, Risky's Revenge an okay game, and the original the best of the three. I suppose I like it better due to it being the only one with all original content, as RR recycled too many things given how freaking short it is, and then they went on to recycle an entire plot scenario from RR to make the beginning of Pirate's Curse. I also prefer the transformations of the original over RR or the pirate items in PC.

Graphically Pirate's Curse is the best, and it has great boss fights. Its not as hard as the original, but its not as easy as RR.

I love the art design, I just wish there were more new characters/enemies in the sequels instead of recycling so many, and their accompanying locales again and again.

I mean, sure Mario games still have goombas, but there are a variety of them. In Shantae games you head east out of town and you will see Scarecrows, the exact 2 kinds in all three games. Further east, you get to the forest with the exact same flying green guys and tiny spiders in all three games. Imagine if the first 3 Zelda games had basically the same geography, and enemies, more or less unchanged. At least in Pirate's Curse you go to some new areas.

I have no problem with their being boobs in the games. They aren't bouncing around, people aren't motorboating them, or really making a point of flaunting them. I'd still be fine if they did, but they much like the ones irl are just kinda there. There is a difference between a character that has boobs wearing an outfit that doesn't hide that fact, and a character that stepped out of an oppai hentai with jiggle physics and suggestive behavior.

None of the female characters in Shantae games are sexualized to me. They are fun, determined, aggressive, protective, funny, intelligent, silly, and whatever else between them, and generally immodest of dress. The only character that even seems to view them in a sexual way is Geno (I think that is the guy's name) and he gets teased for it. The part in PC where they all wind up together in new clothes is funny, and embarrassing for everyone but Shantae.

She probably pays little or no attention to how people might view her for the way she dresses, and people just see her as the heroine.

By contrast, Bayonetta knows you are looking, wants you to look, and if you are very good you might get to touch....anything, ever again, after she gets done with you.

Also, Shovelknight is a waaaaaay better game than all the Shantae's combined. However, Shantae has way better characters.

Its odd to me that Yachtclub games, used to be a part of Wayforward when they have so much better level design, boss design, and power up design in their one game than any of the 5 Wayforward games I have. Shantae games have better writing/characters at least so far. The bosses might get more fleshed out in the upcoming DLCs.

I am rooting for K.Rool. But pirate K.Rool (DK 2) would be the best.

Agreed. There were some new additions on Pirate's Curse but I hope for a big new enemy parade in Half-Genie.

His name is Bolo. And this is one of the new nitpicks I have with the game. Why a guy should be teased or made fun of because he thinks of sexy women in a sexual way? Pretty common in media.

I love Shantae. The GBC game came out, iirc, after or just as the GBA came out and thus it was overlooked but is a gem.
Never played the third game in the series though.
Love Wayforward!
I do have some problems with them, mostly in that they seem to run out of ideas in the back halves of their games.

I only became aware of this series a few days ago, starting with Risky's Revenge. But that motherfucking game gripped my heart from within the first few seconds of the opening screen.

Half-human, half-genie, all cute.
