I just beat Persona 3 recently, it's the greatest Jrpg I ever played. I want to pick up FES and P4 soon as well.

Nocturne is the best game in the series, and is the one to start with.
Digital Devil Saga is the hardest, though it also has a great story, second only to Nocturne's.
But really, you can't go wrong with any of them.
The only RPGs I've played that remind me of SMT are the Shadow Hearts games, if only because of their mature themes.

Does every sequel take place after the previous game? Or are they like the Final Fantasy series where none of them have anything to do with each other, story-wise?
I've only played Persona 3 thus far, but that experience alone ranks very high on my list of favorite RPGs of all time. That game has a particular charm that's incredibly endearing, and it's just plain awesome to boot.
Now if people would only stop decrying it as "emo", maybe it'd get the recognition I think it deserves...

There's also Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine, the free-to-play MMO. I'm enjoying it, but I'm probably not the best person to ask since I love anything SMT related.
As far as I understand, Nocturne is the only game released here that is actually part the Shin Megami Tensei series. Persona, Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga, and the rest are all spin-offs of the main series.

First of all thank you all for commenting and I believe like some of you that nocturne is best and should be played first. also the persona games are very enveloping and are great to take a few hours per session with them to play great for a lazy afternoon.
Well I played both Nocturne and P3 and hated them both. I didn't like the AI in P3 and Nocturne felt like a mature Pokemon. It felt like I was doing everything wrong and was a game intended to sell strat guides.
Now the Digital Devil Saga rocked. I loved both of them even though when I got to the final boss of each 1 I had to spend hours (in the realm of 24 to 48) to get the right skills I needed to beat them. normally that would be a gamebreaker but I was to invested to quit.
