I noticed the members of this board have something against stereotypical JRPGs.

Can't say I blame them, JRPGs are going way down hill as of late.

But a few years back, a little company called Atlus released a PS2 game that set the bar so high, that no RPG since has come close to matching it for atmosphere, style, or pure sadistic difficulty.

Shin Megami Tensei is a long-running RPG series focused around demons, religious warfare, and humanity getting caught in between.

The PS2 incarnation, 'Nocturne', is the third in the 'core' series of SMT games. Each is primarily based around a single protagonist trying to survive the conflict between warring religious factions, and Nocturne is fairly similar in this regard.

After being invited to a hospital by one of his school teachers, the protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne finds himself caught in the center of the end of the world.

The Protagonist awakens after the apocalypse to find two of the few remaining survivors waiting for him.

Shortly thereafter, he finds himself forever changed by a parasite of their making into a half-human, half-demon.

Commonly referred to as the 'Demi-Fiend'.

The Demi-Fiend is not only given the task of trying to survive, but he is also informed that he is one with the power to remake the dead world however he decides.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is all about choice.

Bring the world back to its former state, or bring about its destruction.

However, the player can't accomplish either alone.

The Demi-Fiend must contend with the demonic forces of the Vortex World, many of whom want him dead.

While destroying them outright is always an option, Nocturne offers a more beneficial choice.

Making them fight for you.

By using conversation in battle, almost any demon in Nocturne can be called to the player's side.

Some are courteous, others not so much.

But how should the world be remade? Well, there's the rub.

Several factions have their own ideas of how that should be done. Side with one, and see their fruition brought to light.

Side with none, and die a lowly demon.

As he is part demon, the Demi-Fiend can not create his own Reason. He can only use his strength to support that of another.

In the end, the choice is yours.

Nocturne is a turn-based RPG, but there is little traditional or mainstream to be found here.

Well, unless that guy counts.

In addition to a cameo from Dante, who arrives to destroy the demons of the Vortex World, Nocturne is full of monsters and spirits from all sorts of fictional and historical culture, ranging from the angelic to the demonic, from western to eastern, from Celtic to Norse and Catholic to Buddhist mythology.

You can find info on a lot of the demons referenced in the SMT series here [http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki].

Nocturne is a pretty rare game, but it's worth tracking down.

Failing that, any game under the SMT umbrella is good times(Persona, Strange Journey, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner), but this is the definitive one to get.

I got Devil Summoner for DS which is my first experience with a SMT game and I must say that its rather fun, but nothing special story wise. I like the demon summoning/breeding system also.

That's Devil Survivor, which is also worth playing.

The art style kind of sucks, but it has a surprisingly good story.

Interesting.
Iv always wanted to try my hand at the SMT series, i love mythology and this looks to have a lot.
Still the series creeps me out, and im not sure if its in a good way or a bad way.

Anyway, a lot of people that have played it have said almost the same thing you did, its one of the best games in the series.
And from what iv seen of it myself, it just looks plane old fun.
And isn't that what really matters?

Nocturne is my all-time favorite RPG! The Shin Megami Tensei series reinvigorated the genre for me when I thought that FFX had put it's knife through any semblence of difficulty or actual gameplay. Nocturne is strange, dark, and engaging. The best hidden gem ever.

I was so happy when I finally found this game, an excellent if fucking hard game. Though if push came to shove I'd probably choose Persona 3/4 over this.

Question: do you have to play the other SMT games first to "get" this one? I haven't played any as of yet.
No, you can play any of them independent of each other (I think), save for the Digital Devil Saga games. You pretty much have to play both of those, since the first one leaves so many questions unanswered, and the second one makes lots of references to the first.

I recently started playing Nocturne(Or Lucifer's Call as it is known here in Europe), and I love it. It's hard, but lots of fun, it has a kick-ass soundtrack, much like all the other games in the franchise, and you get to fight all kinds of demons, angels, fiends and fairyfolk. In all, a great JRPG, among the best.

My favourite in terms of story and character development is still Persona 3, though.

Definitive one to get? It's only one game. Digital Devil Saga is spread over two games and the story is immensely well-written. I recently finished number 1 and am plowing through 2.
I prefer DDS over Lucifer's Call, but to each their own I guess.

Also, the 3rd game in the "core series"?
Nuh-uh... there's like 15-20 games before nocturne/lucifer's call.

Okay... have you played FFXIII?
It's actually pretty hard, as is FFXII if you don't know the strategy for beating the next boss.
Saying there's no semblance of difficult in the FF games is just downright stupid.
Sure, X and X-2 held your hand, but that was really it.
There were some really tough battles in VIII and IX.
The story battles alone in XIII can be quite difficult until you figure out which strategy to use. How is that any different from the smt series?
Most of smt is figuring out which element will hurt the boss and then guarding against his element when he goes to do his most powerful attack, rinse repeat.
Saying it's harder than the FF series is just stupid. They both have their flaws and advantages.
You're just biased. I speak as a fangirl of both series. I played Final Fantasy long before smt, but Shin Megami Tensei is just as good as FF and guess what? They've both pretty much been going for the same amount of time and have almost the same number of games in the series.

I'd played FF5,6, 7, 8, 9, and the first 1/4 of FF10, and I what I didn't like about 10 is that with instant character changouts there was no preparation or strategy to fights. I haven't played FFXIII because all reviews say it's a linear mainstreamed interactive movie, and I've come to enjoy SMT's gameplay.
I may have seen a game over screen a couple times in FF games, but each of Nocturne's bosses made me scrap my entire team of demons and go back to the drawing board of demon fusion and streategy to strengthen my teams elemental defenses and attacks. In FF you just grind, grind, grind to boost the level. Nocturne was also breath of fresh air for it's dark, bloody, demon-infested post-apocalyptic setting. Plus the voice acting and writing is way better in Persona 3/4 than FF10. Also, the persona series allows you to chose which relationships to grow, rather than sticking you with characters for an entire game, whether you like them or not.

There is only one thing that annoys me in the SMT games, those stupid eyelashes. It's completely irreverent to the entire series but it irks me to no end. Especially in the Devil Summoner games, that just look so prominent and bad.

However that's the worst I can say about the series because the rest is damn good. Some people may find flaws in it, but I have not yet played a better JRPG made by a different company.
