A bad ending in Riven...

Any of them, really.

Would you rather:
-watch helplessly as the void you're trapped in burns?
-Watch as the antagonist kills all the good guys and everyone dies?
-Watch your main ally cry as his wife dies horribly as well as everyone else?
-Be shot to death?
-Be shot to death?
-Be shot to death?

My seven-year-old self could barely handle it.

If we're talking not-game-over shocks, I can say I was stunned by Braid's ending...
There were multiple endings in Riven? The only bad ending I can think of was getting trapped in the prison book (and I can't remember whether that actually happened)

I remember all the bad endings to Exile though, nothing like a good bludgeoning of the head.

1. Use the trap-book in the rebel hideout: Burn to death.
2. Use the trap-book on Riven itself: Gehn forces his guinea-pig sidekick to use it, knocking you back into the real world where he shoots you in the face and thanks you for revealing the trap.
3. Trap Gehn, then release him: He asks WTF you're doing... but thanks. And he closes the book.
4. Trap Gehn, then release him in the Rebel age: You horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE bastard.
5. Don't trap Gehn, break the fissure: Atrus comes in, is promptly shot in the face, Gehn thanks you and shoots YOU in the face, Riven eats itself.
6. Trap Gehn, but don't release Catherine: Atrus is mortified, but links away as Riven eats itself.

So yeah, it has bad endings.

I didn't think the bad endings to Exile were shocking, seeing how they ended exactly as one would expect when your bad guy is played by Brad "I Will Eat Your Soul" Dourif.

Commence screaming.

The Riven ones were shocking because people died brutally in all of them, compared to the utter lack of death in the previous game.

The general shocks (At least that I remember):
The twist in KotOR-Which seems super obvious and is lampshaded by many characters
Mass Effect and Virmire
Mass Effect and the Citadel
Bioshock and Andrew Ryan
DA:O and the mutual death of Archdemon and Warden
DA2 and Anders (Dammit Anders >.>)

Two things come to mind.

Finding out that the Collectors are the Protheans for the first time in Mass Effect 2.
The sacrifice of Dupre in Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle. /salute

Watching your girlfriend being brutally killed in The Darkness.
I felt my stomach drop.

Finding out the big reveal in Star Ocean 3.
After I crossed over to the 4th dimension I was so insanely hooked that I couldn't put the game down. I wanted to play solely to advance the story and see what was coming next.(And I usually could care less about the stories in games)

Having just replayed Jade Empire for the first time in years, finding out the true extent of the Big Bad's plan....
Especially finding out who the Big Bad actually is.

I miss you, old Bioware.

When I was playing Muv Luv Alternative there was this terrifying scene that was the whole turning point of the game....and it was fucking brutal in both shock value and plot advancement

I'm still trying to get over it....<.<

I'd say half of Persona 4 is a shock moment just because of how the mystery story pans out and is set up.

Don't you dare open this if you have never played Persona 4, i mean it!

There's roundabout 5 red herrings throughout the entire game the last 1 or 2 were really well hidden. A few of those character/Shadow interactions were slightly shocking in terms of character development annnnnnd fucking Adachi man!

Also every case in the Ace Attorney games is going to have a shock value because hey mysteries are cool.

Also, gameplay wise. Shock value, thy name is Lythero

Spec ops willy pete fucked with me a bit, and the fight club style reveal at the end cemented it as one of the best game stories this gen period.

Others include:

Would you kindly

cod nuke

Hakumen being jin from the future in an alternate dimension.

that about it. Don't give a shit about putting up spoiler tags because this is a thread about spoilers.

That quote is actually from Silent Hill 3, I think I stopped killing monsters after that

I'd say the game's shock moment is when Nanako gets kidnapped, the game was pretty lightheartened up until that point (murders and all). The game gets truly intense after that point, having to chase the killer, finding out the origin of the fog, etc.

Yeah, sorry. Not the quote I was thinking of. Pretty early in 2 there was some notes at a dead end after killing a few of those spitter things that hinted at the monsters being people. Can't seem to find it right now. Liked that one better since it didn't spell anything out but hinted at it.
