I was so tempted by them at the time. I wanted the Condemned one, but they were like £15/20 and I was not gonna pay that much. It always annoyed me that they also clashed with the rest of the casing of the console

Well, there's always the easier option for customization by using a sticker. Sites like Decalgirl offer just such decorations without the need of hard plastic. Usually a nicer quality, to boot. But then, a vinyl decal is less intrusive than the faceplates. Nice idea, wrong audience, I think.

Faceplates for a mobile phone are fine, you get to show them off and look at them as stuff... you barely look at an xbox, - what you look at is the screen.

Now selling xbox menu themes - well that might work better.

My brother got handed a rainbow six vegas one to promote the game, or the xbox, either one.

Free ones are cool, right?

Also, this is relatively cheap considering you get a full body simpson xbox for 2 grand 0_o.

Or just paint it

I have the Final Fantasy XIII faceplate on my 360, but I had to buy it on eBay because those jerks didn't retail release it! I thought it was a good idea the custom faceplate but all the best ones were part of collectors editions and they should of had a faceplate online store where you can make your own, then they would have sold some. Also 3 of my friend just went to an airbrush artist to get custom designs on their original faceplates and they said paying AU$100 was better then AU$20 for an ugly cheap design.

I have a truly "custom" faceplate on my 360. I was going to a hot rod car show afew years ago, so I took my (stock) faceplate with me, and got a guy at the show to pinstripe it.

Why would I want a faceplate for something I'm never going to look at while playing it?

That's like giving your car's muffler a paint job.
I remember when I only had my 360, so no backup "next gen" gaming consoles, and I had already incurred the RROD wrath. Yeah... only up until I stopped giving a damn (having a PS3 in addition helps), I would watch that bloody thing for however many damn minutes. Just a "Please turn on this time!" staring game with the green eye of fate... :-S

I never bought one but it actually would have looked nice on my Xbox since I keep it in a cubby hole in my desk with only the front visible. If I ever see an okay looking one in a clearance section for a couple dollars I might just pick it up.

Well, I saw a faceplate recently, and truly, it doesn't look that cool as soon as you see the sides of the Xbox360 are still that dull white color.

Honestly, I think customizing consoles is a great idea. But just changing the front, which is the smallest part of it really, for $30? No way. I want to see a system that offers fully removable sides and front, and back if they could pull it off without risking system integrity. The little 'side stickers' don't work for me, but imagine mixing up various images from various places to create a unique system. I think it would be quite cool.

So good start, but overblown prices and poor use of design choices (most patterns weren't very good in my opinion) made the entire thing a flop.

I actually really liked the faceplates. I have a small collection sitting around back home. The problem was, retailers rarely stocked anything semi-decent looking, and the price was to high, both mentioned in the article.

I always wanted one, but didn't buy one for a number of reasons:

- The faceplates were expensive.
- Faceplates that weren't white looked off when put beside the rest of the console
- The only place that stocked faceplates was EB Games
- The only faceplates they stocked were blue

I bought the wood grain one, only reason was because I never got my white faceplate back after sending it to MS... oops! Thank God for Black Friday and my PS3 slim, I haven't played that worthless, white hunk of junk since.

My inclination is the people who are really into case-mods are the ones willing to do the work themselves, or shell out to other talented people to do it for them. At least you'll probably end up with something unique and personal that way.
