A Cambridge University student has thrown a shoe at the Chinese PM http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7866320.stm

The shoe missed by 1m, the guy was immediately removed, but now he's having to make a court appearance. Personally I think he's awesome, and think the police are being too extreme. If I threw a shoe at some random person and it missed, nothing at all would happen. Even if it was reported, I probably wouldn't even get a caution, just like a verbal warning or something.

Well, his country doesn't have freedom of speech, that doesn't mean that he should be treated with less respect than any other foreign visitor the our country. He's not a power crazed maniac like Mugabe, he genuinely believes that the way China is ruled makes it a more prosperous country.

I doubt it is a good idea, I mean what will it archive? Will throwing the shoe make him change? No, will it do anything to change him from being the way he is? No? Then what was accomplished? If the shoe hit then it would have been a different story (*Cough* shoe thrower gets killed/tortured *Cough*.) It's not a good idea in a country where morals seem to disappear from time to time.....
Bragging rights and ammunition for his supporters to use if someone like you were to ask him that in person.

"At least I did something for my country. What do you have to show for it?"

Eh, he's just immitating the Iraqi shoe hurler.

I believe the uppety douche should face charges. The protesting is fine, that's our right, but hurl objects at diplomatic officials or heads of state? (1) You'de think a Cambridge student would know the better and (2) if you behave violently, you're no better than those your protesting against.

Shoe Fight! . .

I want to see someone unlace thier shoes and run manically at a political figure intending to whip him with the laces.

Anyone can throw a shoe.

I think the question of everyone's lips is 'what size shoe?'

...no?...well erm...*throws shoes at everyone*

I could see this replacing protest marches within a year...

Well think of it thiss way, if people are throwing shoes to prove a political statement, at least they're not killing people

I don't think that disagreeing with a country's actions is enough justification to throw a shoe at the country's leader. That's just extreme. And that applies to all occurences of shoes being thrown at political figures.

Slightly more seriously, though, I think throwing shoes is just stupid. If you don't like the person or the country or whatever, be intelligent and protest peacefully. Or, if you're really serious (or psychotic) about it, try and kill the person.

Or if you are going to try and do something stupid, just get up and yell at the person. No reason to lose a perfectly good shoe.
