So, Shogun 2 Total War is nearing release.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/34330/?snr=1_4_4__100

So the release shouldn't be a surprise to anyone any longer, as usual the first news of it had the Total War world jumping for joy (I knew about it way before then though...not to sound like a dick or anything, but I do have some connections with CA).

Though I am also optimistic about Shogun 2, I have a bad feeling that it may just not be polished enough to be as big as Rome Total War was (arguably the best TW game to date). It feels like just yesterday that Empire/Napoleon Total War were released, and those two were arguably the two biggest let-downs of the Total War series.

So what are your thoughts? Will Shogun 2 come out big or just barely make it as worthy of the Total War title?

You may wish to visit here for a little bit more info on Shogun 2, if you are interested:

On another note, any other hardcore Rome Total War fans out there I don't know of? (Yes, it was my all time favorite TW game :D)

Honestly? I think it'll be more of a hit than empire or napoleon.

They're bringing back general speeches, it fits with history more, naval combat is hopefully much more refined.

It's going to be what we love about total war, and it's going to have a soul again, something Empire definitely lacked.

...Also I love Rome: Total War :p but I much prefer Medieval 2.

Empire was the biggest disappointment of my life I must say.

Medieval 2 was superb though, I loved it too. But I definitely have more hours in Rome than that.

I liked the idea of Empire, I want, desperately, to like it. But it -desperately- wants me to hate it. It shuts off all it's personality. Scoffing and giving me the cold shoulder when I say hello. I'm like "Look I really want to like you D:" then it's like NAVAL BATTLE, NAVAL BATTLE. LOOK BOATS! NAVY!" ...and those were really bad :(

So I was forced to leave her for her older brothers. Both of them. ...I don't really know who's laughing last. >.> But someone is.

I was very eager for Empire, and when I first played it...I couldn't get into it at all. First thing I noticed was the music sucked...figured out later it wasn't done by Jeff Van Dyck. Huuuuggge let down.

Everything else just didn't flow well. Didn't feel 'Total War'...lifeless.

I enjoyed both Empire and Napoleon, if only my comp could run Empire Darthmod edition....
Just the ability to retrain troops on the move makes it all worth it.

Lets hope my comp can handle shogun 2, otherwise its time for an upgrade.

I enjoyed Rome and Medieval the most, Empire Total War Grand Campaign felt too big imo. Something I would love to see in a Total War game would be Co-op Grand Campaign, where you and a friend each control separate nations. It would have some kinks, such as working in the turn system, and some things would have to be tweaked, but I think it would be nice to be able to develop alongside or against an actual human with the ability to ally or attack them.

I think they already designed a co-op multiplayer, though i have to recheck.

This would be awesome if there was.

On a side note, I never really used any Medieval TW mods, but I've heard there are some good ones. Anyone know any?

Medieval Total War 2 was my personal favorite of the series, modded with Stainless Steel version 6.0 - I've lost countless hundreds of hours in my life to that piece of digital crack.

Empire was a real let-down, since there was very little strategy involved. It just came down to whoever had the biggest guns/most money - which made it more of an accounting game a-la Sim City rather than an RTS.

My biggest dissapointment with MWII was that it was impossible to fight a balanced battle without losing half of your army (assuming it wasn't packed with broken longbowmen). Also, cavalry would die within .01 seconds if their initial charge failed to rout the enemy.

Still, I have been following Shogun II and I have to say I'm anxious for it (which I try not to let happen - especially not when there's a risk of labelling myself a weaboo). From the previews it seems like they've worked out the kinks in their previous systems and carried over shit that worked - like economy and hero units.

Here's to hoping it's all we've hoped for in RTS games. *raises glass*

My biggest fear is that the AI will be as stupid as it was in Empire. Just like in Empire, they hyped it up like it was the best AI in any game. When it was released, the AI was beyond pants on head retarded. They have been doing the same with Shogun 2 which has me worried.

Rome is easily the best, that I must agree.

Stainless Steel seems to be one of the biggest ones around, at least that's what I know from knowing the guy who made it. Other than that, I haven't played any M2TW mods.

The AI has always made me want to band my head against a wall, especially in diplomacy. Some nation declares war, catches me off gaurd and takes a city. I gather my forces, take that back and then go on the offensive, asking for peace after one or two conquests. They refuse, insisting they will see my doom. I suppose that makes refusing their pleas for surrender when you have them on their knees that much more gratifying. I also had a pretty good thing going in medieval with a diplomat. I would bribe the French into coming to my side whenever they tried to move on a city I bribed out from under them, so they kept sending a constant stream of crap units to me that I kept disbanding, then I would get relations back to perfect and they would stop.

Get Stainless Steel for massive accuracy and awesomeness, Call of WArhammer for DA WAAAAGH!, and Third Age Total War for the best Lord of the Rings Strategy game ever.

But make sure you have Kingdoms, without it none of these mods work.

Yeah, the AI has always been entirely pathetic. I hope for the love of god that the AI in this game will realize it's logical to sue for peace when you have the upper hand.

I suppose they had the Pope to do that for them though, that annoying bastard saved so many nations just because they were Christian by demanding that I make peace.

One among many reasons as to why the Muslim factions were the best. :)

Go Moors!
