I've wanted to get on board the Steam train (pun intended) for a while now but
A) I can't afford a gaming PC
B) I wouldn't know how to build one
C) I like the simplicity of consoles. I like how you can just hook it up to your TV and it just works. I know you can do it with a PC but it's complicated.

This sounds like a great opportunity for me to finally use Steam. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

whether Valve should make a console? no they are mostly targeted to the PC and making a console will shaft this audience.

No.

I think that Valve should instead make a better investment in Steam providing a better service such as improving it's current DRM, client features (a whole bunch of problems that still exist, the majority are minor issues) and bloody finish HL2E3 and/or HL3.

Whether 'SteamBox' is a console or a PC has yet to be made clear. Ideally, a PC is basically an adaptable computer (hardware and software) that allows different OSs and peripherals to be attached. In my opinion, a Macintosh is the PC equivalent of a console, the bar will be set from those standards.

Pfffft!

What, so they can release one game every 7 years for it? All aboard the Fail Train, there's some space in carriage B next to the Atari Jaguar and the Virtual Boy. Toot toot!
Not sure if you're trolling, being completely ignorant about Valve's recent game releases or under the impression that the company that makes a console also makes ALL the games for it. Whichever option it is, this is truly a stupid post.

Seems like a good idea to me. I probably wouldn't buy one (I have a PC for Steam games and my budget is stretched thin enough as it is), but if this hypothetical Valve Console does well enough, it might force Microsoft to reconsider its less-than-savory business practices (subscription fee for playing online, grossly overpriced peripherals, sometimes unreliable hardware, insane DLC mandates, deceptive MS point pricing, the list goes on).

No they are not a big enough company to make a console. They are entering into a serious and well established oligopoly that has very, very, very strong brand loyalty. To do anything like the so far vapourware rumours said it will the specs for it will be relatively high compared to consoles and it would end up costing a lot or losing Valve a lot. Out sourcing hard ware or not it still must be funded by Valve.

Gabe has expressed literally zero interest in getting into hardware and a lot of this stems from a misquote in a review. He goes on to say(well the gist anyway) he would only venture into hardware if he had to but has no desires to go into it at the moment.

If you know how Oligopolies work and that Valve is only a private limited company of its size you should know this is not a safe business move for them.

I think so even if its just so all the valve fanboys on /v/ stop having strokes every time I say I play a console.

I really don't see the need. The essentially dominate the PC market and the only really difference between PCs and consoles is that on consoles you know a game will work, but on PC the hardware might not be up to par. Still this becomes less and less of a problem as PCs get stronger and punblishers are getting smarter to the point where they allow you to play PC games on console resolutions so even low end pcs can play them.

So long as it is really an extremely modular borderline pc piece of hardware that's only real difference from actual pcs is its extremely self explanatory and user friendly and also easily hooked up to a tv (Yes I know you can do it with normal pcs but it requires extensively over cluttered wiring and extra components) Since those are what the console scrubs (me included) ***** about and having a way to get around that would bring everyone around. Also being modular like a pc but all of them starting at a specific standard helps standardize graphics for releases.
You can connect a computer to a TV using a simple HDMI cable and changing the output btw.

A Valve console.
Heh.
Sounds like the worst parts of both worlds.
DRM-ridden game box with rapidly expiring hardware and poor/limited user interfaces/peripherals, woo.

Only if it's just a pure gaming PC.
But it needs to be called the Steam Engine.
If these conditions are not filled then no.
