That's some bad luck for VT. Is gun violence really bad in Virginia?

Two seconds after a shooting happens, and you dickwads start arguing about video games scapegoating and gun control? And why is it that Escapists can only spout talking points about religion, gun control, and SOPA? Regurgitating an argument that thousands of people before you just used doesn't make you smarter!
It's really not that bad. It's only reported because it happened at a school where a shooting happened before. If it wasn't at a school it wouldn't get much attention. My home is near DC, and we rarely hear of gun violence anywhere in VA.

Wait, what? AGAIN??

Christ, I am never going anywhere near Virginia Tech. This shit is ridiculous. Are they trying to set some kind of record?

Or it might be The Darkness, there was a murder/suicide scene in that and you know how these people can clutch at straws.

Hmm, I remember reading that DC had a lot of gun violence, or crime in general. I didn't know if it applied to Virginia though, but I guess it doesn't.

It used to, for sure. Lot's of things have changed in recent years. still has some shady parts, but nothing like it used to be. And yeah, most of virginia is extremely dissimilar to DC. :)

People use guns because their is a great chance that no one else will have one.
And if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you.
So you're telling me, that if you wanted to kill someone, or rob them, or otherwise bend them to your will, and you didn't need a gun to do it, you'd still use a gun?

If every person who got robbed just simply gave up their wallet, then people wouldn't resort to violence. But people sometimes resist. In order to keep them from resisting, people bring weapons. Knives don't always scare people, but guns do for the most part.

You can kill someone with a knife, a piece of paper, a plastic bag, or even a pen. So why do people choose guns then? It's not because they're cheaper and easier to come by. It's because they're effective, and basically the most powerful type of weapon you can get without the hassle of acquiring a bomb.

Unless you were just trying to be a smart ass.

Oh, and you shift the goalpost in one sentence!

That's not the same absurd statement as the one you made prior, that the only reason you use a gun is a good chance others don't have one.

Unless you were just trying to be a smart ass.
Nope. Just sane.

I didn't shift anything, though you did put words in my mouth. I didn't say it was the only reason people used guns, but it is one of them. Give me a better reason why they would. Or, you could answer my question that you so artfully evaded.

VT has released the identity of the officer that was shot:

http://www.vtnews.vt.edu/articles/2011/12/120811-unirel-crousememoriam.html

On a related note Virginia Tech's campus is one of the places I feel the safest. I can hardly go anywhere without seeing a cop on campus. The fact that this happened is just mind boggling for all of us.

Damn they went juggernaut, really?

Well at least they took this more seriously considering they're getting sued now for the mishandling of the 07 shooting.

Also it's interesting that whoever the officer stopped didn't call the police curious as to whether the shooter waited till they drove off or if the person stopped just panicked and sped off not bothering to call the police. Seems he was shot outside his car and usually officers are in their cars long after they person stopped leaves.

*Looks at the news*
~Europe is facing the biggest economic disaster in history with various governments facing potential bankruptcy and the Euro is in danger. Some law makers are thinking of asking America for help.
~President Karzai is blaming Pakistan for a recent terrorist attack on Muslim worshipers in Afghanistan.
~The damaged nuclear reactor in Japan has been leaking radioactive water into the ocean.
~Somalia. Seriously. Just Somalia on the whole.
~For that matter: Libya.

Yeah, man. That America. What a shit hole. Who would want to live there?
*sigh* I was talking about the Western world and just about the violence, not the economic troubles that plague the entire Western world. Really, I didn't make some huge post, it was quite simple, not too hard to understand. Or so I thought.

This is terrible. Absolutely terrible. You know, I sometimes wonder exactly what happens within these people's heads, what little bit of their mentality just snaps and leads them down this path.

And as for all who wonder exactly what video games, music or movies will be blames, I daresay that we'd need Chris Rock here to explain it.

For all this "guns r baaaaaad" talk, you know, you'd think they corrupted the human psyche into a black pit of malice and evil just by their proximity.

It's interesting, then, that more of these mass shootings don't happen at, say... shooting ranges. Or hunting stores. Or police stations. Lots of guns in all of those places, and lots of people who like them... you'd think they'd start shooting one another up at the first sign of a car backfiring.

Considering how evil these inanimate objects are, and their given magical ability to twist the soul to vile deeds, it's funny how most of these mass shootings take place in so-called "gun-free safe zones".

Perhaps the thought of armed, capable resistance from those not so willing to be victims at the drop of a madman's hat shifts said madmen to easier, defenseless targets... Maybe even ones that advertise themselves proudly as such.

May the officer rest in peace.

Maybe they'll consider letting people carry on campus now so they can defend themselves.
Im not sure giving everyone on the campus free reign to have firearms would reduce the chances of this type of incident happening, this would make the process of bringing weapons to class mundane and any prospective loon will find the initial phases of his/her killing spree much easier.
So creating "gun free zones" will make it harder for shooters?
Oh wait. First post already proven that wrong.

Not saying it is, but the US debt is way higher than any singular non-bankrupt European country, isn't it?

Well the point was that only criminals having guns can't really be a bad thing because it leads to less people getting shot because there are less people with gun's overall
What...?

Only criminals having guns means that less people will get shot...

That means that by your logic someone owning a firearm legally will lead to that person shooting someone. While not being a criminal? Excuse me, but if I shot someone I am a criminal and no longer a resposible citizen.

Criminals owning guns = bad. But you can't catch 'em all. It's easy to make a fully automatic submachinegun at home.

And by the way, it's worth the extra jail time because knive vs. knife usually ends up bad.
