Before you completely skip this topic, understand why this is relevant. to actually claim that your shooter is the greatest is to overlook the fact that there is no one greatest shooter. the categories which one falls under are these:

People involved:
Multiplayer (Campaign is little more then a Glorified Tutorial or a practice session.)
Balance (very hard, have yet to find a legitimately good game in this, as the time has yet to be dedicated to one half of the game or the other.)
Singleplayer (you play for the campaign, multiplayer is little more then a side-thought, or completely non-existant)

Weapons Count:
Futuristic (all weapons)
Realistic (limited, 2-4 depending on game)
Backpack (all, limited to a selection)

Weapon's Era:
Ye Olde Bows and Arrows
WW1/2
Civil War/Revolution/other similar wars
Western
Steampunk
Present
Future

Health:
Regenerative
Solid state %
Realistic (best example is MGS, health regenerates slowly, but is overall a non-changing %)

Perspective:
First Person Shooter
Second Person Shooter (over the shoulder)
Third Person Shooter

Axies:
1d (where you can only move left or right, and enemies come at you)
2d
3d

Any categories i might be missing?

i managed to post a thread, and yet no one notices, despite being the most relevant one possible to gaming.

Good for making a list? You covered everything I could think of already. We haven't had a really primitive game yet, have we? Bows and arrows? Add Medieval era to that list, though I don't think any FPS's in that time frame exist.

Sorry?

I think your missing setting, spooky graveyard setting. Cheery city or vast countryside.

I think, that you just got unlucky when you posted it. Maybe it got drowned out with other threads. Its a good point. How do you compare a game with muskets and a game with rail guns?

Age of Chivalry. It's a Multiplayer medieval FPS Source game.

It's also shit but that's just my opinion.

What do you mean about realistic health? two shots you die sorta thing?

Also, what about a game like splinter cell? were gun fighting is usually frowned upon? would that be considered a shooter since it fulfills the requirements? Or a action adventure game?

I'd like to say Xeno Clash fits in there but I don't think Xeno clash fits in anywhere. It's a mix of modern and primative.

Anyway, I'd say you could lump balance and multiplayer together since one requires the other, but that's just my view.

The lord loves a modest man.

OP: I think you could include technical specs. Shooters tend to try harder to push the envelope in terms of graphics. I'd say it would be a graph with technical specs on the x axis and realism on the y axis. For example, Crysis would be at the top of the realism and the technical, whereas Borderlands would be in the middle of the technical but low down on the realism. MW2 would be on highest on the realism but middling on the technical specs.

dear god I'm stoned
technical specs Vs Photorealism is as you said, a graph, this isnt a category, its a perspective and statistic

want the joint?

Well there's Bioshock 2...
The only other one that I can think of is Damnation which is reportedly awful. Thief 2 might qualify but I'm not sure.
