I no longer play online PC games (thanks to PC gamers) so my steam account won't show most of the PC games I have listed, I created a new account to stop getting hounded by the more angry PC crowd members

And I still rate halo as being one of the greatest series out there, simply because of the universe it has created, no one feature makes a game great, but halo really does have it all, the fantastic games are just a small part of that, The music by Marty, the artwork (which they still make), the story, which stretches across years, with games, books, anime, comics, full graphic novels and more making up the storyline, most of which I have assembled.

But most of all?

The community, because Halo has one of the greatest gaming communities out there, players who are not only incredibly fun to game with on a night in with a few cans of relentless and a pizza, people on other sides of the world, but also incredibly talented people, who craft maps, create films and utilise the game's very intricate theatre system combined with the photo option to create any image, from a humorous image of a shangheli warrior in a compromising position, to a picture of a great kill, to highlighting a gameplay glitch, to even creating great works of art utilising the tools at their disposal.
On top of this is the ever present Machinima, something that owes its entire pedigree to halo, starting with the warthog jump VHS video, then halo's very own Red Vs Blue, before which, machinima was largely unheard of, but then a couple of guys from drunkgamers make a random video and one of the most successful franchises in the online world, something that finances its creators real life to a degree where they can live comfortably, is created from halo, and is still the most successful, but it also lead to the rise of tons more machinima series being created that would otherwise never be seen.

And what is the best thing about all of that community stuff?

Bungie is directly involved, they see people like the rooster teeth crowd making machinima, so they put a theater system in their next game, to make the job easier, and lower the barrier of entry to new players.
They added a file share so that people could show their work to other players
They created one of the simplest, most elegant map editing tools outside of far cry to allow players to craft their own arenas or even areas for their machinima.
Next they create an entire system, a library, to store all of this stuff, peoples work immortalised on halo waypoint, information available on all aspects of halo lore, from the timeline, through the history of RVB, to the detailed down to individual screw images of vehicles and fighter craft that were not even featured in the actual games, combined with multiple pages of writing detailing their use in the halo universe.
The same system stores a wealth of interesting content for people who prefer to sit back and watch, the motion comics for example, a brilliant treat, complete with audio and exposition on parts of the war we would otherwise have not heard, as well as showing parts of the after effects of the human-covenant war, the devastation dealt to multitudes of planets, the same being seen by those who caused it, now freed of their bonds to the prophets, seeing what they had truly done, very powerful stuff if you get into it.

Finally (regarding halo anyway) the series has never hit a low note in terms of gameplay, it all fits together nicely for me, the energy shields, the health system, the weaponry, the grenades and the enemy types all work as one big fun unit, add co operative play to that and you have got the most fun anyone can have legally.

As for CoD?
meh, fun game, played better, played halo.

I would like to know is (Multiplayer aside) why some of those fanbases dislike games like Bioshock, Crysis, Fallout, and even Killzone. All of which are at least marginally above average, and the only halo game I consider above average is Reach. CoD is ok IMO, but it's too easy.

Been playing FPS since 1997. (Goldeneye & DOOM II were my first & started playing them around the same time)

Never liked the COD series.

Quite enjoyed Halo:CE, the rest of the series was meh. (haven't played Reach, looks identical to 3 which I have played)

In my time, I've played 29 individual shooter titles in 13 franchises (at least that I remember).
- Star Wars: Dark Forces, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy
- Call of Duty, 2: Big Red One, 3, 4, MW2, BO
- Star Wars: Battlefront, 2
- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
- Mercenaries
- Tron 2.0 //Bleh.
- Halo: CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach
- Goldeneye 64
- Half Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2
- Mass Effect, 2 //Mind you, an RPG with shooter mechanics.
- Gears of War 2
- Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
- Avatar: The Game //It was a gift.
And I find Halo and most CoD to be entertaining. Even beyond the gameplay and story elements, Halo has an excellent soundtrack and art direction, and even the most average CoD title has some effective moments.

Why is this a good argument? It's not.

It's not an argument at all.

Sure, if you've played more shooters, you have a larger reference pool, but that doesn't affect how you enjoy the game. This thread is hardly more than an invitation to be a hipster, even if there is something to be said for their admittedly disproportionate popularity.

Eh, CoD just works, the controls mechanics everything, it just works very well. That's why it's fun, that's why people buy it. Although I've found pretty much any skills you learn from most FPS games in the past 5-6 years are interchangeable between most other games. I mean, I can pretty much apply most of the skills I've learned through playing css competitively onto CoD, Battlefield etc.

All FPS games have their merits really which is why I never really understood the hate towards some and love towards others and I think a lot of hate towards some popular ones has a lot to do with hating how popular it is, and/or hating the developer. CoD has the great frame rates and smooth action which is nice while Halo gives a different experience that is refreshing from the illusion of realism military shooters portray. If I had to choose a favorite it would be CoD when playing in open lobbies, at a LAN party, or a party room full of friends however Halo is the way to go.

I have played every game you listed except for infamous, which I don't even consider a shooter. That list probably doesn't even scratch the barrel on the number of shooters I've played since I can trace my doom clone experience through 5 different systems and at least 3 of my pc rigs.

That being said Halo 2 is still my favorite console fps. It was stupidly fun as it was the first console online fps I sunk more than 50 hours into. Any game you can play that long and still play it for the game itself and not just because your friends are is a pretty damn good game. I enjoyed COD 4, but haven't liked a cod game since.

There is a reason they are so popular they were truly great at their inception, but have simply gotten stale because all the good parts have been played to death.

Well a good few of those aren't actually shooters like Armoured Core(It is a mech game for example).

OT: I like CoD 2 and 4 because they are good solid shooters that have a very intense competitive community if you can get into it. If you are to have any chance you need to know every nook and cranny of every map. Also they are fun.

In the PC version we had mods and some of the best custom maps I have seen in games. Anyone remember the random ones like gob_rats? Or the Death Star? PoW camp? Those are only 3 off the top of my head. Then in the CoD 4 PC we had mods custom maps and didn't have the pile of shit that was the wank stain of prestige.

I don't care if you think those golden oldies are the best ever that is up to and any top ten or favorite list is subjective. When it comes to gameplay and campaign CoD 2 and 4 are solid, functional and mostly balanced. Even the balance is corrected with mods for scrim setting(ie no P90 for most scrims). The only unbalanced thing in CoD 2 was the PPsh.

I've been playing computer games since the original gameboy and FPS's since Doom on the PS1. I can't be bothered to create an arbitary list but COD4 is my second favourite game of this gen (after GTA IV). I'm a dual console owner and I would also consider COD4 probably my favourite FPS of all time (with honourablt mentions to Black (PS2) Die Hard 2 (PS1) and Ultimate Doom (PS1).

While the original poster felt the need to list platformers and RPG's to her/his list I will refain as I fail to see how my appreciation of Ratchet and Clank or Fallout adds credence to my opinion. Having said that I would feel prefectly comftorable posting on this thread (in spite of the request I didn't) even if Black Ops was the only game I had ever played. Snobbery FTL.

As for why COD 4 stands out. With the exception of the M16, 3x frag and claymores it was a beautifully balqnced game (never had a problem with martyrdom as I thought dead silence was better). It is also an utterly compulsive, I loved the maps the accessibility, the "just one more game syndrome" in my opinion a pretty much perfect online shooter.

The SP is one of my favourite SP experiences of this gen. I found it emotionally and morally engaging, with brilliant set pieces (specifically 'Ghillies in the Mist') and a variety of paces and styles of gameplay rewarded.

Essentially for all these reasons and because I am not a snob it is probably my favourite ever FPS and unlike the OP I get the impression I am writing from the perspective of five gens of gaming not two.
Just out of curiosity are you a console gamer?. I missed a bit of your post. I am not trolling but I find that only console gamers have a problem with the M16 being imbalanced. Never had any problem with it on PC no matter the mode or perks. The only thing that people think is imba is the P90 on the PC. Even then it is more so for Hardcore settings.

Glad to hear things are better on the PC. I must admit the M16 being overpowered pales into insignificance compared to the unbalanced atrocity that was MW2, I imagine the killstreaks made it feel unbalanced on the PC as well unless you are very good (I noticed people who effortlessly get the harrier, pavelow, chopper gunner combo never felt there was a balance issue!)

Well I personally think the problems with the M16 might have to do with a generous auto aim or aim assist. I don't play on console so I don't know if that is the problem just speculating. When something is as good as people say it you should see a lot more in scrims when the main rifle was AK 47 unless you went silenced then it was M14. The M16 was there just no where near as prevalent if it was so good. Never played MW2 but I never found the choppers too bad in CoD 4 as I always got the last LMG with stopping power and ACOG and ripped it to bits.
