Was just about to suggest Serious Sam 3, then saw you haven't played it yet.

Play that. It's going to scratch all those itches you describe. Huge chaingun, massive numbers of varied enemies to kill, long gameplay, good graphics. You want shooting? THATS what serious shooting carnage is. I highly recommend.

And the Syrian Mutilator. It's like an energy whip that constricts and rips any enemy to flying bloody chunks. Super satisfying. Make sure you have enough graphics enabled that you'll see the bloody streaks on the ground. Tip; you only have to wait until the red light flashes on it, not until it auto-kills the enemy.

The only "modern" things about it are the graphics, the zombie clone enemies with assault rifles that are really weird and out-of-place, and the existence of the assault rifle ironsights and a sniper rifle that is super secret and limited anyway. And a weak story that takes place entirely over a headset phone, and lots of helicopter extractions. Doesn't bother me at all though.

It's made by Platinum. PLATINUM! Why aren't you already playing it?!
I remember there being one und ONLY one weapon in that game that i deemed worthy of the name of weapon besides underpowered cork gun. And that was the shotgun. Massive damage, once upgraded near-assault-rifle rate of fire...

Good times.

OP :
I don't see any killzone or resistance on your list. I take it from a lack of a certain console?
If you should find someone willing to lend you a ps3, and you can get past the initial awkwardness of controlling an fps with a controller (tip : map your trigger to the r1 button instead of the damned 'trigger' button of r2) both shooters hold up well. Plus, both of the trilogies are available in collections now. You might find resistance 2 and KZ2 to be a bit of a bore, but such is the sad fate of the middle child.

Also, check out black mesa. An HD remake of original half life. More needs not be said.

If you're looking to experiment a little with the genre of shooter, try out guns of icarus online. Four man teams tasked with either piloting, repairing or gunning aboard massive steampunk airships. Massive amounts of fun and if you find a team of friends with which you can discuss and try strategies, you will quickly become unbeatable. There is so much nuance to be able to put into your preferred role of either gunner, pilot or engy and if your team let's you experiment around it's fun!

I just love jumping around the ship as an engy, with absolute no regard for own safety, just fixing stuff and sometimes manning a cannon to take some shots at some enemies!

TimeSplitters! Lots of enemies, lots of weapons and as far as Future Perfect goes the graphics were pretty good. The design and the animation have stood the test of time really well, since Rare went for a very cartoony approach.

You listed "Far Cry 1, 2 and Blood Dragon". If you haven't played Far Cry 3 yet I strongly recommend it, I think it has some of the best (optional) stealth in an otherwise action-y shooter.

The Max Payne games are also very good. Yeah, the story gets a little redundant by MP3 but the game is just so much fun. I love the level design in that one. And you can finally take cover, which you'll be needing a lot anyway.
Do you know where to get TimeSplitters? I've been looking for it but it's nowhere to be found :'(
Loved those games (well, 2 and FP, didn't play the first one)
Absolutely no idea, I only played Future Perfect on the PS2. Apparently a "multiplayer remake" of the trilogy, called TimeSplitters Rewind, has been put up on "Steam's Greenlight concept page", whatever that is.

Try RAGE. It got a bad rap when it came out because it was pumped up to be revolutionary, and wasn't. Instead, it's just a pretty damn good shooter. Graphically, it holds up really well. There's a decent variety of enemies that are all very diverse in behaviour, there are a lot of guns, all of which have multiple ammo types diversifying them further, and mostly importantly, all the weapons have that "Oomf" factor. They're loud, they kick hard, they feel like powerful weapons and the enemies have a vast array of animations for reacting to being shot, making combat feel visceral and chaotic.

There are also a bunch of other things you can use in combat, like crafted sentry turrets/spider turrets, a variety of grenades and other throwable stuff.

There's also the driving, you'll drive between missions in a customizable combat car (of which there are a few varieties) and engage in some vehicle dogfighting. I thought I'd hate this when I first encountered it, but it's incredibly fun. You can also participate in destruction derby style combat races if you like.

The game should clock in at about 10-12 hours long on a first playthrough, maybe longer if you're interested in doing all the not-main-story stuff.

As for the drawbacks;
The characters are reasonably well acted and dialogue is well written, but nobody really stands out. The plot also goes nowhere, it's just an old-fashioned vehicle to move the gameplay along.
The only truly terrible thing about the game is its ending, which is underwhelming, disappointing, resolves nothing, and comes out of nowhere. That being said, it's not too bad, since you won't be playing it for the plot anyway.
Multiplayer amounts to nothing more than racing or a few self-contained co-op missions, but since you're not interested in MP anyway, that shouldn't be too big a deal.

I'd strongly recommend it since you can get it super cheap these days.

Ever thought about Mass Effect? The combat in the first one is passable at best, but it really starts to pick up around 2 and especially 3. It has a story that spans 3 games, and was really enjoyable throughout. The three games are also all on sale on Origin if that helps, and even if you are still not sure, 2 and 3 have demos on Steam and Origin respectively.

We don't know your platform or control type however, if you are a M&K only type of guy I highly recommend you take the time to play with a pad as well, you will find many multiplats are designed & paced with the pad in mind and are more enjoyable to play, ofc you can't just pick up a pad and the controls feel right day 1 it takes time to develop a liking for them, start with TPS then move onto Starbreeze FPS (Riddick series, Darkness) which are good noob FPS imo

Arcade shooter PC
Revolver 360
Astebreed
Jamestown
Crimzon Clover World Ignition

Rail Shooter
REZ HD (360)
Child of Eden (360/PS3)

TPS
Vanquish
Binary Domain
Space Marine 40K (hack and slash / shooter hybrid with great game feel)
Alan Wake (novel shooting mechanics but not as fun as the above 3 by a long shot)

FPS
Syndicate
The Darkness 1 (2nd is on PC which I haven't played)
Chronicles of Riddick series
Xotic (shmup style score attack FPS)
Call of Juarez: Gun Slinger (a fave of mine, best fun played in Arcade Score Attack, good story plays slightly like an arcade light gun game)
Drunken Robot Pornography (on PC, might be your bag I haven't had chance to play it myself)
Doom XBLA (plays surprisingly well with a pad due to no vertical aiming worth playing even if you have the PC version)

Also give Titanfall a go, I generally don't like MP FPS but that game is fun.

the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series is pretty good. They're like Fallout but better (IMO).

That list seems rather large. Do you still own those games? Why not try replaying a few? If there were some that rubbed you the wrong way you can give them another shot to see if you're more in the mood for them this time.

How about a few retro ones? Duke 3d is a classic for good reasons, original Rise of the Triad was too long but fun, I've heard nothing but good things about the remake, and for the hat trick how about Strife? It's a mid 90's FPS where you get missions from the characters you meet along the way. Mix of late medieval and futuristic styles, good weapon selection, and multiple endings based on your choices. All the ones I mentioned are available on Steam so no expensive and annoying quest is needed to get them.

Apocalypse on the PS1.
You're Bruce Willis and you need to kill the four horsemen of the apocalypse in order to stop the end of the world.
Lots of weapons, lots of enemies, lots of mayhem, lots of fun.

Haha I only listed ones I remembered from quake 2 era onwards. Doom etc. have all been well played :D

Shadow Warrior...huh. Another one I forgot about. *Adds to list*.

Darkness 2...is on PC? Whaaaa!? Must get it now!

Generally I don't play console shooters - the controls just don't click for me at all.

Yeah no console shooters. Else I'd be all over Resistance 3.

Black Mesa looks good but I'm put off by the fact that it's incomplete.

TBH the only part of Black Mesa that isn't complete is Xen... just keep that in mind.

The only thing missing from black mesa is the last alienlike levels. Which were my least favourite anyway.

Plus, i'm already resigned to the fact that black mesa will never be finished in this lifetime.

If you like a shooter with an old-school feel with awesome Unreal 3 graphics, you should strongly consider Rise of the Triad (2013). This is the most faithful reboot of a 1990s era shooter I have ever seen and a hidden gem. You collect Mario type coins for no reason other than to increase your score for 100% completion. There are 7 different explosive weapons you can pick up, two magical ones, a variety of bizarre power-ups and tough as nails bosses. The multiplayer also rocks. It's pure silly gratuitous twitch shooting at it's best.

I agree. Be it the original or remake, you will have fun.

I gotta join in on recommending Black Mesa. Sure the Xen levels aren't ready yet, but this is Half Life like you've never seen it before and it is absolutely stunning. You got Half Life 2 graphics and physics, NPCs that don't all look and sound the same and a competent AI that'll keep you engaged. You can buy a version on Steam, but the free version is still available and will continue to be supported.

I tried ROTT and it was okay, but not a fan of the enemy variety. Shadow Warrior looks right up my alley though so will check it out (used to play the original a lot way back when).

It would be weird playing Black Mesa knowing I couldn't finish it. Will wait for the Xen levels. HL:Source still holds up fairly well at least.

I'll also recommend the original Doom/Doom2. Been meaning to try the Brutal Doom mod myself.

You mentioned Metro: Last Light, but what about 2033? Have you played it? It's a really amazing, incredibly atmospheric shooter, offering more realistic difficulty modes in the Ranger Easy/Hard modes to boot.

Tribes: Vengeance.

Great movement mechanics, a surprisingly good single player storyline where you take control of a number of different characters with their own quirks, there are three different armor-types that affect movement speed, special movement options (the availability of jetpacks and "skiing") and available weapon types. Give it a try if you can hunt down a copy, it's fun.

Played 2033 and was not blown away by it. Seemed to have the worst of Doom 3 era pitch black corridoor slogs and the worst of modern gaming 'realism'. Have heard good things about Last Light though so that is on my list.

Ooh. I always thought Tribes was MP only. Will give it a look.
