Outlaw Star- Little old, but pretty good.

Gantz- Short, sweet, and f*cking depressing as hell.
Totally agree with gantz I mean does he go splat under the train Or is he saved by the timer?
I know it's strange but I've always loved shows with,as a friend of mine calls them, B*st*rd endings(buy a vowel). Shows like as you said gantz and evangelion movies to a lesser extent the evangelion series, what the heck was going on in that final episode anyway, And of course Gilgamesh dang that one had a sweet kicker Absolutely everyone dies with one exception, and not the one you think, and that final frame with her grinning covered in blood priceless
You'd probably enjoy X/1999. Well, the movie version anyway. Another one of those anime where you reach the end and wonder what the hell was the point in them even trying. There's also Blue Gender, for your giant robots fighting alien bug needs. You'll grow attached to many characters, and get to see them eviscerated. There's also...

Paranoia Agent- Short, think only about 26 or so episodes. Admittedly I haven't seen the entire series, but what I have seen is pretty good.

Golden Boy- Only about six episodes. Perverted, but funny.

Berserk- Not sure if anybody has mentioned this one yet. Only about 26 episodes, but those 26 are full of bloody, good, medieval fantasy fun.

Big O- Only two seasons long I think. Giant robot noir fun. Ending will probably tick you off though...because it doesn't really explain anything or even make sense.

I loves anime I'm going to have to put Full Metal Alchemist forward.
it was only about 50 episodes which i class as short.
I mean look at the mainstream animes bleach and naruto
(and thats not even including Naruto Shippuden)

Two more unusual ones
Rosario + Vampire
about a dude who goes to a demon school unwittingly alot of relationship
stuff but It's funny and you gotta love te bat
and then Black Lagoon
it's about a mercenary group and well its a little complicated but awesomes.

Okay seriously last one Gantz
the only anime that has ever made me want to read the manga
be warned though the anime ending has nothing to do with the manga ending and is in my opinion really really bad but the mangas still going and thats nearly finished and it was soooo much better than the anime
okay I'm gonna go away now before i start thinking of more...I'M NOT SAD!

I membered spaces

Seen some of golden boy awful lot of jiggly jiggly in that one as I recall and the ending of blue gender was great Haven't scene those other ones although I have been reading the X manga but only have the first 2 volumes

Blood+ (50 episodes) and Claymore (25ish) Are both good. And they both have an ass-kicking female protagonist.
I ended up crying my eyes out at the end of Blood+ because I'm a big ole' marshmallow.
Claymore has some more action than Blood+ and a killer end credits song.

For the record the claymore anime is realy good up until episode 22 I think at which point they deviate from the manga have a stupid ending. The manga goes on way past that point and is still going now, one of my favorite manga to date.

OT: Most of what I can say has already been said before in this thread but my recommendations are Darker than Black and if you want a real short series Straight Jacket, it was only 3 episodes but I thought it was really good and would have worn out its welcome if it had gone on for too much longer.

Black Lagoon got the green light for a third season...so eventually I wouldn't call it short. But damn good none-the-less!
WHAT THE FUCK!!!???? Really? Please tell me you are telling the truth. Oh shit that OWNS.
I absolutely agree...the news made me wet my pants...lol. Though it is not as I had originally hoped...a third season was announced on the cover of the first volume of the novel. No date other than 2010, as of yet, but it may be limited to OVA's. The 3rd season was hinging on the completion schedule of the manga. Which as we all know is very slow.

It is not out of the realm of possibility that a 3rd "full" season comes out of this, it's just that the Anime had caught up to the manga. For anything else, we'll just have to continue waiting.

In before Death Note, Code Geass and Cowboy Bebop

Seriously, how many times do those same three series need to be recommended? Change the bloody record guys.

Go watch Darker than Black.
HELLLLL YEAHHH!!!!!! finally someone else who has heard of it!
also, Zombie Loan. 11 episodes, starts two more, then dies halfway through a story arc.

No, the Manga will never end. it's just shifted from the practice fights the series was founded on to an intergalactic stage where the Gantz team fights their alien counterparts. I'll only start considering it ended when there's talk of some Gantz home world. Also, the vampires completely ruined it.

Hmm, has anyone said "Bastard!!" yet? GREAT 6 episode anime featurin the greatest wizard of all time.... Dark Schneider! REALLY great fantasy anime, inspired by D&D and heavy metal (although the metal references were cut out in USA due to copyright issues, but to list some examples, the kingdom of MEtallicana was changed to MEta-Rikana, and the most powerful spell used in the manga at this point is Black Sabbath)

i recomend trigun, blood+, claymore, and an anime called scryed which may end up sucking ass but the five or so episodes i saw were pretty good at the time i saw them (so it may not be great)

Detroit Metal City, very short and hilarious.
Code Geass r1 and r2
Trigun is just a classic.
Darker than Black, i enjoyed a ton 2 seperate series
Cowboy Bebop, yea many people love it for a reason, right up with the best anime ever made.
Samurai Champloo its got it problems and some glaring plot holes, but it still short and some epic samurai action.
FLCL is offbeat funny and twisted and very short.

Death Note and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Both fantastic, both only about two seasons long.

Nerima Daikon Brothers, 12 episodes . I LOVED that show, It's one of the reasons I got into anime. It had singing, dancing, and all around complete hilarity.

I love Blood+. I've watched the series in its entirety at least four times by now, and bought the full sereis-DVD yesterday. It's got everything I like about anime, and lacks the things that I don't. It's got believable characters, great character arcs, story arcs, it's got an ending, it lacks the quirky humor and slapstick found in certain anime, has got an overall serious tone without getting to dark, it's got tension, drama, love, humor, great music(by none other than Lion King-Hans Zimmer). All in all a great package.
