What defines "short" exactly?

If it's around 5 hours or less, I'd say...
1. Portal (obviously)
2. Machinarium, because it's the finest example of a 2D point-and-click puzzle-adventure game I've ever played. The world and characters are charming and creepy-cute and the puzzles are a ton of fun. The puzzles even sort of fit in with the setting, unlike with most adventure games, because it's all about robots and who's to say that sentient robots wouldn't require a complicated puzzle to open every door?
3. Child of Eden, because it's the closest you can get to getting high without taking drugs. Plus it feels like you're conducting some kind of amazing cyber-symphony. All in all a very fun trip.

If "short" means under 10 hours, I guess you could include Ico and Silent Hill 2 in there as well, both of them for being games that did atmosphere incredibly well.

What was your favorite game that was very short.

Mine was brutal legend because i loved how it was an RTS/Adventure game and those are rare. It did feel like it unfinished though because you only fight the main bad guy and his army only once though out the entire game.
Plants vs. Zombies

I might not be the first one, but hey, its worth being said.

Might as well close the thread: 15 minutes of distilled ass-kicking from start to end, Strider is as "short but sweet" as possible.

One of the greatest games I have ever played, and one that I play maybe once a month again, just because of how amaing it is! It could take you anywhere from 90 mins to 3 hours, but ever second of it is brilliantly put together, and the SoundTrack! ohhhh the SoundTrack <3 ! Just listen!

If you havent played this Game, PLAY IT NOW, it is Brillant!

Metal Gear Solid. Can be finished in around 3 hours - but it's perfect. And so good that you'll play it again. And again. And again.
Indeed.
Love that game to pieces.

I'd like to mention Portal.
Short but incredibly good and funny.

Star Wars: Republic Commando. Seriously it only taken me two and an half days to finish it but I had two and an half days enjoying that game.

I have to agree that SW:RC is a fun game and can be completed well under 10 hours. Only problem is that even highest difficulcy is quite easy and I'm not even a shooter person. So someone with likes for BF or COD might find it embarrasingly easy.

There are many short but sweet games but obviously, Portal gets the cake.

geez, that was a bad pun.
Terrible pun. It's a wonder you're still alive.

I'll say Portal and Braid. And World of Goo. I seem to like the puzzle games.

Uncharted and Uncharted 2. Haven't gotten my hands on the third yet, but I really love the first two games. Beautiful graphics, fun gameplay(as fun as cover based shooting can be.... I love climbing shit!), great story and rather loveable characters.

I heard those games were good but i was turned off by them because I also heard that they had over complicated stories
They aren't overtly complicated if you play them in chronological order and pay attention. The Second and Fourth one can be a little confusing at times, though. A little historical knowledge goes a long way as well. You should play them. The story is the best part.

Wow. Portal wasn´t mentioned by every single poster in this thread. Ww are evolving, gaming community. Well done.

Ironically, Imma say Portal. It´s one of the sweetest things you´ll ever play.

Timesplitters Future Perfect. I've run through that game in a few hours, multiple times, and the corny lines never stop being funny. The gameplay is solid (one of the best shooters for PS2) and the levels were pretty interesting, even if absolutely linear. The supporting characters and how they interact with Cortez is what really makes the game for me.

Costume Quest- very unique idea and the gameplay whilst following a similar formula throughout never got boring. Also the art style is awesome. Probably takes 3 hours to 100%ish.
