"The Great Waldo Search". A game with five levels that involve one button press each. Literally. It's two minutes and twenty Great British pounds of your life with no replay value.

For a game to be considered short, it has to have an ending.

Everything else is arbitrary. If the game doesn't have an ending, and is focused entirely on getting a high score, or beating your opponent in a single elimination game, then it can't really be called "Short"

the best game I've ever had a chance to play

thank you very much

in fact, I've not been so happy with the ending of a game since Portal.

FEAR

Because running around completely lost in the terrible level design for the offices doesn't count in the total number of hours spent on that game.

Portal, best 2-3 hours of your life!
:p I've been playing that for 6 months (On and off) and still haven't finished it... *ashamed*

The HL:2 episodes.

you could easily mention games such as portal and the episodes of hl2 - but they were always intended to be shorter than the average 7-10 hour game play.

It is, however, rather irritating when you finally reach the end of a game and upon checking the time, find that it really wasn't very long. I always feel the game is lacking which no amount of multiplayer can rectify. For this i designate Battlefield: Bad Company. Unfortunately not very long. ho hum, onto the next game it seems...

I'd probably have to say Gungrave, the game runs under 5 hours (perhaps 3 or so). Still it's replayable heaps, because blowing stuff up is fun.

Besides "Burn the Rope", which is fun, I'd have to go with Adventure on the 2600. Even as a small child I was able to master the game. Once you learn where all the items are you can finish the game in around 3 to 4 minutes.
