I've had a couple of amusing experiences with this actually.
I'm lucky enough that the contraception I use also stops me having periods at all (though this isn't the case for all women using this medication). As a result of this I have dated guys and when we hit say 7 weeks - 2 months they have started getting very confused or scared that something has gone terribly wrong.
OT I think a boyfriend should know for his own sake as much as hers. A lot of women find sex more pleasurable during their period as long as they can deal with the mess involved, and then there is the whole PMS side of it, but I have never experienced any of the emotional symptoms associated.
