Should children playing online games not use mics, even if they provide helpful teamwork?

Mics aren't needed unless you're in some sort of clan. For some games I tend to mute people who start to talk, it's annoying to listen to, they usually talk to their mates, bark orders, or shout abuse. I tend not to mute people on Counter-strike source though, cos it's server based with the same people.

Left4Dead (1 and 2) are the only games online during which I spend that much time, and most kids are fairly respectful (more so, if they're aware it's an m-rated game.) So far, my experiences with them have been generally polite and cordial. They're also generally more than happy to pick up cues to improve their game (e.g. don't stray too far ahead or you'll get eaten by Hunters).[footnote]Dunno about the insta-kill Witches in Realism Mode; Everybody seems to be drawn to them like touching wet paint.[/footnote]

Chatters and shouters mostly have been adolescents and adults. Then there's those who pipe music in over the mic, and there's outright griefers who will pipe various sounds through just to disrupt play, but the physical ages of these people are less than clear.

As someone who is quite aware of the issues of minority and identity groups (and who believes in efforts to normalize them in American society), I'm particularly miffed by common use of gay epithets (generally fag or ******, but more often, gay used to describe something negatively). But that is plenty common amongst adults as it is amongst kids.

I would also argue that dangers to our children are overstated in US media, and kids are not only resiliant to events in the living world, but are able to determine the difference between fantastic situations (e.g. video games) and real-world ones (e.g. domestic violence), ergo, don't need to be shielded from M-rated games.[footnote]Or, for that matter, some of the tamer AO rated ones.[/footnote]

I think anyone should be allowed to speak on an online game, regardless of age, gender or voice pitch. Anyone who thinks kids shouldn't speak are clearly intolerant.

Edit: Not all of us are child-haters either (no offence)
It's true, I'd take a kid with a high pitched squeal who thinks about what they are doing and actually helps the team instead of some two-bit ass who simply shouts abuse and anyone and everything *I have actually heard one man excessively start shouting about a the corner of a wall and how he couldnt get round it sometimes*

Just because they happen to be children, doesnt mean they arent as good as, nay better than you, never underestimate them, they might just turn out to be child prodigies.

Oh, and yes, they are probably going to be awful at the game itself, the children out there that are actually reasonably good are few and far between, but still, it doesnt mean we should exclude them from trying, we all have to get better, some do it by watching, some do it through talking and some do it through making an inordinate number of mistakes

Now, I'm pretty biased since the only online game I play religiously is L4D 1 & 2. That being said, really, I don't give a damn what age or pitch the person has when they speak. Heck not only is talking to each other in that game a good idea, but in some cases required. Some will actually get kicked or just plain babysat through whole campaign if they don't have a mic.

Chowderheads and arrogant pricks are the norm across all ages. I guess it's just more annoying to people when kids swear because kids are generally not supposed to parrot profanities.

I suppose it's a bit ironic, but a few days ago I was in a versus match with not one, but two people who played music over their mics so loud that that was all I heard, but both them them were good enough players that it was probably one of the best games I've played. We finish every map with all 4 ppl, and never let the other team finish at all.
