Should everyone have the right to be a parent?

I think NO.

People should be screened for parenting and only when they fulfill certain criteria: ie no psychological ailments, no physical ailments, sufficient dedication to bring up child, time on hand, etc that they should be allowed to have kids.

For example, a woman who is the CEO of a bank and does not have time to bring up a kid, SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE A KID. If she tries, it should be aborted. This is because the child has the right to have a good life and poor parental support will just make it run into psychological problems later. And if a man has 6 kids and can't support a 7th, he should NOT be allowed to have any more child and should be punished/fined if he does.

The government or another non-profit party has to oversee this project and enforce it strictly.

Uh... No.

I'm afraid this kind of meddling in people's lives would cause more problems than it solves.

Governments just aren't that trustworthy.

Anyway, the point here is do all women (including those who don't have time to look after kids because they are off drinking coffee with friends) have the right to be parents? And I think they should be forced not to have kids.

Hey, ma tu sei Italiano! Minchia, credevo di essere l'unico su sto sito!

edit: I think everybody should have the right to become a parent, HOWEVER the government should be able to take your child away from you if you aren't one.

I think it would be fair to do that although they would need to implement it slowly so there aren't tons of illegal pregnancies and babies.

People should only be parents if they can and will financially support children in a good home (no slums, very little good comes from being raised there), have the time to spend with their kids (maternal/paternal leave, among other things are needed), and know what they are doing, not being overly lenient but not being arbitrarily oppressive (won't let you kid commit violent crimes or do drugs, but would be flexible with the lesser rules if there's reason). Also, no more than 3 kids can be raised at a time. That many kids without the parents really being able to focus on any of them can't be good for them or their intelligence. Basically no redneck kids, kids of parents who are at work constantly, or octuplets.

I believe everybody doesn't have the RIGHT to be a parent, but I also believe that nobody can truly say they are a perfect parent. And if they're not perfect, what right do they have to decide such a major thing in somebody else's life that really isn't any of their business? The Government in particular shouldn't ever be involved in this.

And Aborting a child that the parent wants to have is essentially murder, in my opinion. It's not even debatable, since that child, without the aborter's intervention, WOULD have been born and probably survived. Even if you believe an unborn person isn't really human/a person, it's still some sort of "unlawful extermination of future humanity without consent" or something.

Nobody should have so much undeserved power over another person's future happiness.

Edit: Don't get me wrong-adults should definitely think things over before they have kids and decide whether or not they're really ready for this. And there are definitely abuse situations where help is needed, but a sweeping governmental parenting program is an abuse of power of the highest order and is open to unfathomable potential for corruption.

EVERYONE has the right to have a kid. Just because they may not be the best parent does not mean you should abort the child. Having a psyhcological or physical imparment should NEVER be a reason for not being a parent. If you are disabled, you have the right to still have a child. I think a lot of people who deserve to be parents (infertile couples or gay couples) are deined this right, and so the people who can not support children and choose to give up the child should be able to give the child for adoption so other people can be parents

Yeah, because if he is put in prison then you are worsening the problem; he wont be able to be with his bloody kids!

If you fine him you are worsening the problem; he has 7 kids to feed, it wont be exactly cheap to do and you are making his situation more difficult to handle!

I think if parents are clearly bad ones, and they beat theirkids etc, dont bring them up in a healthy environment then social services need to take some kind of action, but what you are suggesting would make the situation so much worse not just for the parents, but mainly the kids!!

Just women, huh?

Personally, I would hate to live in a country where some guy in a suit who has never met me gets to tell me whether or not I meet his arbitrary requirements for motherhood.

Where do we draw the line? Who draws the line? "Oh, I'm sorry but we have to abort the child because our requirements clearly state that you have to work less than 24 hours a week before you can have a child. You're working 25 hours; can't you see what an atrocious parent that makes you?"

Some people aren't suited to having children, obviously. But a law like that... that would be a gross invasion of one of the most basic human rights. That law should never, ever be passed.

The only reason someone shouldn't be able to keep a child is when they obviously cannot provide for it fully, like if the girl is barely starting puberty, or has a mental condition or something. Any other reason just allows the government to control who has babies based on any arbitrary reason they impose, making us be alot like China in that regard. America was founded on freedom and liberty, and taking away an integral part of the family really only can hurt the country and promote discontent in the long run.

I see what you did there! Are you trying to steal Max's reputation of going off-topic everytime? You should have guessed you're not the only italian on this site.

Government should not be allowed to meddle so harshly in peoples lives. Just look at today's world where everything is being somehow monitored by the government: it's bad enough! Some parents just don't know how to raise their kids and such. But you do know, there is an organization, which cannot inforce people to have abortions, but which can take the child away and hope to find a better family for the little creature. Sadly, it's not very effective.

Many people who shouldn't have children still do.
And many people who deserve to have children can't.
Can you give them to them?
...
Then don't be so swift to pass judgement, Peregrin Took!

What about convicted paedophiles? Known child molesters? They would get their own victim now, ready to be manipulated without interference. Spooky thought for me.

I'm not sure about people with transferable diseases, or genetic mental and/or physical deficiencies. Should you have children, if you are 90% sure that your child will be ill when its conceived? When you can be quite sure that it'll be a burden to society, because of all the money needed to facilitate on it?

What if it was discovered that cancer or aids could be vanquished completely if a certain amount of people weren't allowed to reproduce (unlikely, but an interesting question)?

It's highly controversial, but from a logical point of view, it would almost be silly if humanity would not sacrifice a few people's need to reproduce in order to get rid of nasty diseases and genetical faults.

Maybe having a limit would be ok...

But when people say that the government shouldn't be able to control us that much, it's not like it's not already happening all over the world and even in the US regardless. Blind consumerism anyone?
