I really enjoy JRPG's and I have noticed that the PS3 seems to have a much better selection of that genre of games than the consoles I own (XBOX360 and Wii) and the PC. Would it be worth getting a PS3 specifically for those or would it be a waste of pennies. Looking to you for advice Escapees. :3

I think so. It's got a pretty nice selection. I'm not able to recall all my JRPGs at the moment, however. I will be able to provide in a little bit, a small list of games I personally have, or have played.

Disclaimer: A couple titles may or may not be actual JRPGs, but are RPGs of worthy note, regardless.

Tales of Graces f
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Dragon Age: Origins
Mugen Souls
Dragon's Dogma
White Knight Chronicles (II)
Resonance of Fate
Hyperdimension Neptunia (Mk2)
Atelir Rorona/Totori/Meruru
Demon's Souls
Dark Souls

All of which are delicious games.

I would recommend Tales of Graces f, Mugen Souls and White Knight Chronicles in particular. Unfortunately, if you want to play Tales of Vesperia on PS3(which I really, really freaking want to do) you'd best be able to understand Japanese, because there's no NA release for the enhanced PS3 port for that game. ;/ Oh, and get White Knight Chronicles II instead of WKC. It includes a graphically and mechanically remastered version of the original WKC. Just a money saving tip.

Those are all I got, though. Take it or leave it, I would suggest them if you're quite a JRPG fan. :3

JRPGs in general this generation are kinda meh. but between the xbox and ps3, yea i would say PS3.

Valkryria chronicles is a must

A lot of s69 list are strategy rpgs like final fantasy tactics or games by NIS. While i love most NIS games, they are not for everyone. I dont mean that difficulty or gameplay wise, but especially the disgaea series they invest heavily in a certain brand of humor.

I would say "yes." If JRPGs are a genre you want to invest in, then the PS3 has the best library in the current generation (older titles from PSN also help), and the slim and super slim models are both relatively space-friendly.

Jrpgs are not rpgs you need role playing to be an rpg. The genre needs a new name. PS3 has alot more of them then xbox. go with ps3.

The genre has more of a presence on the PS3, and this includes all the PS1/2 games you can play/download in HD.

Shame that I can't recommend my favorite JRPG of this gen (Lost Odyssey) as it is a 360 exclusive. I thought there would be a 1 disc enhancement for PS3 like Eternal Sonata did, alas this did not happen. If you have a 360 get the game though as the storytelling is masterful and it lives outside of many of the tropes and cliches of the genre while still being incredibly faithful.

Seeing how this generation of consoles is on it's last leg I'd say wait a little and just get the new console when it's released. If you don't want to do that then yeah, get a PS3. They are around $260 for a 160 GB.

Dunno really I personally havent played many JRPGS on the PS3 this gen I stick with the PS2 mostly (still catching up) I would say get a Wii purely for Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story which are easily the best JRPGS I have played this gen (and in Xenoblade one of the best ever) unless you count Valkyria Chronicles as a JRPG (its a strategy game really) in which case its worth getting the PS3 purely for that one as its easily the best game this gen so far. Also Demons Souls is great.

It's the reason I got mine and I haven't looked back.
The PS3 just gives a whole lot more options for Jrpgs no matter what type you're into.

Look I get pretty annoyed with this statment when it pops up and if I were to go to far into it I'd just end up starting a flame war, so I'll be as brief as I can. The term RPG basically comes most popularly from games like D&D and other pen and paper games. When these games were being converted in digital format western and eastern developers kinda split ways (without knowing) of which aspect made an "RPG" an "RPG" and due to lack of space on a disc shit had to be cut, leaving us with Final Fantasy like RPGs.

These days, just like western RPGs, JRPGs have both games that put you in the role of and let you take up the role of a character.
There really isn't that much of a difference any more just minor tendancies each follow.

Considering that was the sole reason I got my PS3, I'd have to say yes to buying a PS3 for that reason.

Just... wow... any reason to bring up that huh? You got it backwards though, nearly every game that exists is an RPG because you play the role of someone, IE Mario, Sonic, ect.
(If you want to argue this make your own topic, don't derail this topic anymore because JRPGs aren't enough like DND)

OT: I got a PS3 for the JRPGs, and it's been my favorite system this gen (I later got a 360 and love it, but no JRPGs). It depends on what kindof JRPG you're looking for, more classical style would be your Tales, Eternal Sonatas, and Star Oceans. For your more anime catering JRPG go with the NISA games, I'm partial to Altelier and Neptunia. Lastly for your SRPGs go with Disgaea 3+4 (just get them both, amazing), Agarest War, and of course one of the best games this gen Valkyria Chronicles.

Says the WRPG fanboy. JRPGs are just as legitimate an RPG as Skyrim. They simply interpret the concepts behind an RPG differently. Though I do like how it seems the defining characteristic of RPGs these days is having dialogue options.

On topic. If you're going to get a current gen console for JRPGs and aren't counting hand-helds. Yes, go with the PS3 for the above listed options by S69-5. Their list is pretty all-inclusive. The 360 and Wii have some decent additions to the genre to, but the PS3 certainly touts more games... but keep in mind a lot of them are from fairly small publishers and thus had limited prints so getting the games in new or good condition at this point is going to be pricey or require some searching. Additionally, if you're looking for a lot of games in the line of the pre-PS3 Final Fantasies.. you aren't going to find them. The vast majority of the JRPGs on the console are more in line with the visual novel, focusing on the story or, in the case of NIS games, the comedy of the character interactions.

The Xbox and Wii, as I said, have some decent entries and due fairly poor reception due to the demographics that gravitated to those consoles, you can get the handful they have to offer fairly cheap.

For what it's worth, as a JRPG fan, I have a PS3 and a Wii and most of the games that those consoles have to offer. The 360, for the price, just doesn't have enough of a library to justify the initial investment cost for the genre.

With all that said, the DS and the PSP both dwarf the offerings of any of the consoles as far as sheer volume of games. If you really want a JRPG console, get a PS2 if you don't have one, and start looking. The PS2 has much more to offer than any modern console.

Sorry but going down a pre scripted linear story is not role playing making choices that affect the story is. People who say all games are role playing games only say that because they know jrpgs are not role playing games and they need that argument to justify calling jrpgs rpgs in the first place.

Every game is pre-scripted.. they have scripts. What you said means even "proper" RPGs aren't RPGs because your options, regardless of how many or few that are presented to you, are not organic since they have a concrete cause-effect every time.... and most JRPGs these days have branching stories or multiple endings based on your actions.. so you're either a troll, a hater, ignorant, or all 3.

I'd argue but as I stated before this is a topic about rather OP should buy a PS3 for the JRPGs.
If it will stop the derailing process let me say "Yes I agree with you, JRPGs are not true role playing games because they do not allow you to role play".
Now please PLEASE before the countless others come in to argue with you just start another topic about this, do it for Brother Cadfael.

go for it if enough of them interest you and there is more then just jrpgs since getting a system for one genre doesn't leave you much room its cheaper but that's about it.
jrpg rpg they are what they are get used to it
