I've been often hearing around The Interwebs that Fallout 3 is much like Oblivion. I didn't really like Oblivion that much. So I'm afraid to waste my money. I don't really know why I didn't like Oblivion. Everybody had something positive to say about it, so I gave it a shot. It just wasn't the game for me. Do you think I will like Fallout 3? Is it really just Oblivion with guns? Thanks in advance.

I'm not really an RPG guy, but I liked it. However, I rented it, beat it, and got all the trophies; so if you rent that might be the way to go. The story was great fun, but stumbled twice. Also, it has a remarkable undercurrent of nerd.

Zombies
Costumed superheros
Giant robots that shoot lasers
A comicbook shop
The list goes on.
Overall, I'd say it's worth it.

Yes! Yes!! Buy the game for God's sake!
Seriously though, action RPGs are usually not my favorite games, but I find Fallout 3 to be incredibly immersive and entertaining. Since I bought it I've been playing it more than Gears of War 2, Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty 5 or any of the other games I spent my time on before. It's really amazing.

It's funnier than Oblivion, and smaller. The dialogue and characters are superior. Much better voice acting, if you care about that. And the guns are more satisfying than Oblivion's bow-n-arrow - it feels a bit more FPS-ey. But the gameplay *is* pretty close to "Oblivion with guns". It still feels.. floaty? un-sticky?.. I'm failing to find the right descriptor here..

It's a pretty good game. You'll prolly like it more than Oblivion, but I dunno, since you're not sure why you didn't like Oblivion. Make sure you don't get the PS3 version, tho, if you want the 'full experience' (no downloadable content on PS3).

If i were you id look into it more. i mean it's not like the game is brand new. theres countless threads, articles, reviews, and youtube clips out there. You don't need us to tell you it's popular or a good game. So yea. just buy it.

Yes, it is like Oblivion but like an IMPROVED Oblivion. The leveling system is better, the voice acting is better, the lockpicking is better, the combat is better. etc.

If I knew what you specifically didn't like about Oblivion, I could give you an informed answer. A point of advice: don't expect impartial responses to this question on the Escapist...there are a LOT of Fallout 3 fanboys who think that it's the best game ever and anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron. EDIT: like the newly-registered poster above me.

So think about your Oblivion experience and see if you can give a couple examples why you didn't like it. (I know you said you don't know, but try.) What other games do you enjoy?

Yes, you should buy it, the game gets pretty dull after you finish the main quest tho.

If you didn't like Oblivion and you're not sure why, don't bother with Fallout 3. If it was something like the combat that turned you off of Oblivion, Fallout 3 improved vastly there.

If you are convinced of getting it, don't bother with the PS3 or even the 360 versions. Get the PC version, that way you can not only get the overpriced DLC but you can also get the free mods and user created GECK levels.

I personally did like it alot and plan on getting the PC version used when that gets cheap for the mods and GECKs. But then again, I also liked Oblivion.

Fallout 3 isn't Oblivion with guns. And I'll tell you why.

I didn't like Oblivion, wether it was the crap voice acting, the wholey pointless leveling system or the fact that you effectively spammed the same button, I don't know. But I just didn't like it. Fallout on the other hand, I love. There are too many things to say about why you'd love it, but I'll pick my favourite points about it.

The Karma system. Alot of games can't do the whole Good/Bad thing very well, but the entire Fallout series has managed it. It doesn't just make people shout out expletives or say nice things about you when you walk past, it actually does something. It affects the radio broadcasts about you, the way certain quests can be played, opens up dialouge, helps perks... theres more, but like I said this comment will probally be big enough by the time I'm done.

Next, V.A.T.S. It's an obvious choice, but it's nonetheless awesome. It evens up the odds in fights, makes your opponents exlpode in a lovely gory mess and allows you to kill your opponent anyway you want. The large array of weapons also allow you to view the kill in a series of snazzy ways. Oh yes. Snazzy.

The DLCs. Op: Anchorage, the first DLC made me jizz my pants with glee. Fallout isn't heavily combat based if you don't want it to be, so the fact that Anchorage just allowed you shoot everything in your sight without reprocussions rocked. The Pitt which is just comming up looks good, but thats all I can say. Broken Steel on the other hand extends the storyline, and litterally adds more of everything. Couldn't be better.

See, this is where the Karma system fails. It makes 3Dog (the radio DJ) sound like an idiot (more so than usual, I mean) when he starts talking about how awesome you are for saving that little bunny rabbit that one time, then the next second he starts bitching about how you called some kid's mom a crackwhore the next.

If you are consistent with your choices, and by that I mean always picking the good or the bad, then the radio sounds good. If you go back and forth between good and bad, it makes 3Dog sound schitzophrenic and insane (again, more than usual).

I think I feel convinced. Thanks!
