I'd say it would depend on the price, and if you're into that sort of thing. I haven't played it myself so I can't speak for the quality of the game itself.

The controls are a little awkward, but if you can get past that it's well worth it.

Well Yahtzee certainly thinks so.

Of course I haven't played it myself. It strikes me as the type of game that is good if one is capable of appreciating it. However, Yahtzee claims that he is the only one with a working brain so I guess my opinion is moot. :D

Why are you hesitating?

YES. YES YES YES YES YES!
Absolutely! XD
Yes, a million times over, the controls are a little awkward and the camera has a mind of its own, but the story is one of the finest things your TV will ever show you. I've spent hours mulling over the details and symbolism contained within.
Why would you even question if you need it in your life?
I literally cannot wait to play it again!

Seconded. I've beaten the game more than two dozen times, and I still discover new symbolic nuances when I return :3

If you want a deep and intelligent game with incomprehensible depth and atmosphere, this is the best you'll get! :D

Exactly! It's one of the rare occasions where the story, characters and general setting completely overshadow the (less than amazing) controls.

Two dozen times though eh? That's pretty damned impressive, i think i managed it about half a dozen times. Although i haven't owned the game in seven years or so.
Plus the Directors Cut added a whole new side to Maria.

Actually, out of interest, does anyone know if the Born From A Wish scenario will be in the HD re-release?

That would be a 'Yes'.
If you're considering this purchase, I assume you're into horror as a genre, and as horror games go, Silent Hill 2 is the best I've ever played. Instead of relying on cheap jump-out scares, the game keeps you on edge with an atmosphere of unrelenting dread (achieved by clever use of camera angles, soundscape, symbolism, surrealism and the exploitation of basic human fears), and on top of that it represents one of the finest pieces of writing in the video game industry.
Seriously, if you like horror, buy this game. Now.

Wait for the HD release, that's my suggestion
Ignore him. One of the things that made Silent Hill 2 work was the ways the compensated for poor graphical quality with mist and shadows. An HD release will most likely ruin the atmosphere that made it so amazing in the first place.

I would say yes, the game is quite good and maintains the classic survival horror aspects of the PlayStation era games.
