Should I buy StarCraft II?

So I'm a console gamer, (I know, shame on me.) and I've played StarCraft, but I was never even remotely good at it. Not even mediocre. Hell, I wouldn't describe myself as competent even. I know all the concepts and how to macro/micro, but I have a LOT of difficulty with build orders.
Anyway, I don't want this to become a versus thread, but I also definitely want to pre-order Halo Reach. My question to you is this:
Do I blow $60 now on a game I'm terrible at in hopes of magically becoming better, or do I just hope Reach will tide me over until SC2's price goes down?

(Also: Tips on build orders would be GREATLY appreciated. Though I'm not even sure which race I would want to be. I've always been partial to the Protoss, but Terran seems better for beginners. Advice?)

If you like awesome games and want to play it, yes. If not, or if you think you'll get frustrated with it after a couple hours, well, there you go.

Well it depends, I love the idea of a challenge. I've just started playing a Protoss for the first time and I must admit I am getting beaten a lot, but it doesn't seem to bother me. I just learn from what I did and do better next game. It makes the winning so much sweeter because it's something I'm not normally good at. (and it's nice to see my skills developing) Winning a round in MW2 is great but I definitely don't get the satisfaction I get from winning a match in SC2. I'm not the best but I'm sure as hell having a blast!

Go get Starcraft 2. Play as the race you want to play as. Enjoy the experience as you get better and better.

I've never really been a Starcraft fan either. I would wait and get it when the price drops and when they release a fix for the GPU melting bug.

You'll get better, and keep in mind the new matchmaker means you'll play against people roughly your level.

Oh, and the campaign is great.

Maybe I'm better than I think I am, but I'm not very good at SC either and I'm getting through the single-player campaign alright. There's also a special beginner's league in multiplayer so you'll have some breathing room before getting tossed to the lions.

But if you're not really into strategy you may want to wait on it and go for Reach for now rather than taking the risk of not enjoying a full-priced game.

I've done the math and it seems like hte world editor and potential for mods are enough to buy it, let alone the Terran campaign you've been waiting 10 years for. Remember though, this is an investment in gaming, there's still two more games you may want to buy once you get a taste of Wings of Liberty.

I first played SC with any real effort when it hit our shelves not too long ago.
I'm having a blast and so far, I tried my hand at the campaign for a little while, played a few comp stomps and I'm now in the practice league.

It's great fun, and you learn how to improve from -everything-.
I'd say buy it and don't be beaten by being beaten.

Everyone looses on SC multiplayer. But dont let that put you off. It takes a long long time before you can learn everything (from scratch).
If I was you, I would get it, play through the single player campaign (which gives you a feel for the terran class) then do some comp stomps trying out different classes, I would start with the easiest computer AI, and keep playing it until you absolutely rape it with your chosen race, then move up to the next difficulty ect.
I would recommend that you can beat a normal AI before trying your hand at multiplayer.

Don't become online focused please. That's how people learn how to win in minutes and who's only motivation to play the game is to beat more people.

Seriously, like I said before this game won't be just an RTS game, the maps will give all sorts of game modes, even first person shooters,so don't worry if you won't enjoy the RTS that much, you won't regret buying it.

I have a slightly related question and comment. I was woundering if you had to pay for the online part of SC2. Ive played a bit of the first one and this one looks and sounds amazing but I dont think that I would have the time to play enough to make it worth paying each month for online matchs? As far as the comment goes...in general if you want to get it would say go for it. Like with most gameing Im sure that if you play online you will be able to find people that would be willing to help you get your barrings and help show you ways to improve your skills. Which if you anything like me than the better you get at a game the more enjoyable it becomes since than its less like a chore and more like an actual game

P.S. sorry for the really long comment.

Depends on what you're looking for in a game. I know for a fact that I've got pretty much the same problem as you, but I still ended up buying the game for the campaign - I'm a sucker for a good story. And believe you me, it's worth it. Don't worry about not being able to beat it, the game has four difficulty settings, and you'll definitely beat it on 'Casual'... worked for me, at least.
Long story short: If you're more of a multiplayer guy, then I don't know about it, but if you're a singleplayer person, go for it. This instant.

-first game is 60 bucks, next two expansions are 60 + "premium battle.net features", with blizz hinting at more DLC
-only 5 custom maps can be stored, and you will have to pay for "battle.net premium features" to have more map slots
-(possibly)game modes will be unlockable "dlc" that was already on the disc
-you must have a facebook account connected to your battle.net account to use community features
-campaign is VERY repetitive, even more than DoW2
-single player missions are just bot matches
-cutscenes are poor quality
-map editor is very restrictive, not possible to make detailed maps
-fairly ineffective matchmaking
-terran is currently slightly OP, unlikely to change as this is the seemingly dedicated "beginners race"
-"crushing blows" added
-maps are unbalanced and asymmetrical, so that often the person who gets the lucky spawn point will steamroll
-persistent stats and upgrades that make players who play longer much more powerful, with exclusive units, more damage and less damage taken
-some iconic and popular units removed

Whats ineffective? its great. Yes at first you arn't matched great because everyone starts at same level but after that its great, besides they can't determine your skill before fighting a few rounds.

you get different maps from me because all the ones i see are symmetrical

What? the upgrade system is singleplayer only.
