Should I continue ME1 or just drop it and go straight into ME2?

Would you stop A New Hope half way through because you Heard Empire Strikes back was better? No you stick with it because the build up to the second is a better pay off in the end. Mass Effect 1 is a bloody good game, 2 is better but thats partly because they sorted out some of what I hated in 1 and the fact that everything was effected by the choices I had made previously that enriched my playthrough much more then quitting and starting something half way through.

Keep with it. Or you'll be faced with the consiquences of actions you did not make and that frankly sucks balls.

Yeah ME1 gets much better toward the end and whilst the integration of ME1 events into ME2 isn't quite as impressive as Dragon Age's its nice to see that your work gets recognised across the galaxy.

Dude Mass effect 1 is in and of itself a great game and you'd be all the poorer for not playing it. Try not to think of it so much as a waystation on the road to ME2. you'll lose a lot playing that way IMHO

If you're feeling that you have to "slog" through the first game, you should probably just trade them both in as they probably are not your kind of thing.
Oh no don't get me wrong. I'm very eclectic and I always like to branch and try out new games. From what I've seen I should continue it. The thing was that ME1 had the old habit of saving games, where you save on each bit. I remember forgetting to save on Peak 15 once and I had to go back on the MAKO all over again.

DON'T GIVE UP!!!

Finish ME then import your save into ME2. It doesn't really make a huge difference but it makes enough of a difference to make finishing ME worth it. If at all possible hit the level 60 (or is it 50?) level cap.

Yeah just finish it. As everyone said, the end of the game gets much, MUCH better than the crappy early bits. It also really does pay to import your character over. I really do not think Mass Effect 2 would be quite the same if not for importing a character from 1. So, just do it. You will be glad you did.

I'm in a similar position right now. Due to hard drive mixups, I lost all my ME1/2 data, and need to get a playthrough of 2 done again before the final one comes out, but I really don't want to force myself to play the first one again. I loved the extra touches you got for transferring a file, but I'm still on the fence about the whole thing.
Go here: http://www.masseffectsaves.com/ and find one which matches the decisions you made.
I don't think those are compatible with gaming consoles.

Keep playing it. There are so many things that transfer over to Mass Effect 2 that makes it so much more enjoyable. You don't realize what you're missing till you play ME 2 without a save transfer--or you play it on the PS3.

While i haven't played ME1 or 2 yet, i find it kidna weird that 1 apparently is so bad that you wanna skip it, but you're hyped to play 2.
No offence meant, just finding it hard to understand, since it's not like it's an updated version of the game like most racer/fighter and alot of sim games, it's a sequel.

KEEP PLAYING! Trust me, alot of stuff is made easier if you play the first one than do the sequel (make a poll, man). Paraphrasing for Yahtzee, you can upload your character from the first game into the second meaning that the choices you made in the first one are present in this one making the whole universe feel like a pair of nice old comfy blue jeans. Plus, this Bioware we're talking about! These guys are the kings of all RPGs, Square, Atlus, and Lionhead can't compete. They worked hard on ME1 to make a big universe with an even bigger history to give you a huge personal experience, play it! Get your money's worth, they worked hard now respect them.

Don't worry, I had trouble playing through ME1 too, but after a while it sucked me in.

[HEADING=1]NO! You have to play ME1![/HEADING]
It's 100x better playing ME2 with all the nods and references but more importantly
the default in ME2 with the Council live/die is that the died o_O
In my, and the designers/writers, opinion that is the most important decision in the game and so you really should see whether they go one way or the other.

I own both copies of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, however I have only been playing Mass Effect and I am in no way half way through. Do you reckon I should slog through ME1 and get it over with and play Mass Effect 2 in which I've heard is one of the best games to come from the console straight away instead? I do understand that you get your saves from the first game into mass effect 2 but I just want your opinion in particular. Thank you for your contribution.
So much better when you've beaten ME1. Can't even IMAGINE the difference it makes.

Keep playing ME1 for 3 reasons.

ME1 is worth playing to the end.

If you don't have the story from ME1, ME2 won't be half as enjoyable.

You get a lot of benefits for importing an experienced profile from ME1 to ME2.
This.

I've never been able to finish a ME2 playthrough that I didn't start in ME1. Doing things that way really helps you connect with the character more.

I'm with you on the can't finish ME 1 standpoint. I just can't seem to find the time to sit down with the game and just give it a few good hours of playtime without being distracted or switching to another game.

But I'll never play a sequel without finishing the first game (I never played Kingdom Hearts 2 because of this) and that is a stance I have stuck by for my entire gaming career.

Plus, my friends pretty much echo what everybody in this thread is saying; "Finish the game! It gets better!!"

I know how you feel. When I got my new gaming PC I was itching to play ME2, but hadn't played the first one (I have a PS3). Play ME1 and just get into it. It's a great game IMO, and the back story and general feel from it will inform how you connect to events in the second game. Also you can import a character from a finished ME1 save into ME2.
