Should I get a 360 or a PS3?

Okay escapists, I've finally tired of just owning a Wii. I've just started my medical career which will have me on call at least 7 days out of the month and Imma need some serious quality video games to fill my time with. I am hoping for backwards compatibility. I could care less about most of the Metal Gear games and, Zelda aside, I hate RPGs.

So I was thinking I'd either get a used system or a new one with a decent hard drive. I know that ever since Sony made the PS3 affordable they also snatched away backwards compatibility, so I'm leaning towards a used PS3 or else a 360, buuuttt...

What about the failure rate of the early models? It's not like I can warranty a used console, and both systems had a greater-than-50% failure rate for nearly a year.

So, what do you think?

I love the Splinter Cell games and anything with stealth, FPSs, retro games, I loved the Sands of Time games and I love games with 4-player split-screen support.

Thanks in advance.

If it's backwards compatibility you want; the 360 does a good job.

For modern exclusives; PS3 is now your choice.

Also I don't think PS3 ever had a 50% or + failure rate.

Buy a PlayStation 3, it has better graphics, a free/superior online and it has better games, such as:
Uncharted (2)
Killzone 2 (3)
LittleBIGPlanet (2)
Gran Turismo 5
inFAMOUS (2)
God of War III (Collection)
Sly Colleciton
and Team ICO Collection, Splinter Cell Collection, Prince of Persia Collection(none yet released)

They both have their fair share of good console exclusives but the PS3 keeps getting screwed over by rubbish ports and has a smaller community. Although if you like the exclusives on offer and don't want to pay for online get the PS3.

You know, I have a 360, but in the current situation, I would suggest a PS3 simply because I feel that the 360 will be replaced by a new console fairly soon.

Though I do prefer the 360, I figure it's days are more numbered than the PS3.

Well... With that kind of mindset, I'd go for a PS2 if I were you o_O

Cheap games, lots of them too. You got Metal Gear and Splinter Cell for all your stealth needs and tons of shooters with 4-player split-screen support. And a very low fail rate.

However, if you don't want to go old school (or you already have a PS2) I'd recommend a PS3. Lower failure rate, even with the older models (i've got an old 60gig myself - although I replaced the HDD with half a tera).

You got Metal Gear Solid 4 and Splinter Cell: Conviction for your stealth needs and an entire library of PSOne classics on the PSN-store to feed your retro love. There are also two Prince of Persia titles available (though they've gotten quite a bit of bashing) and nowadays you can't turn your head without bumping into another FPS. As for 4-player spli-screen support, think Little BIG Planet.

PS3 has better modern Single Player games, whilst the 360 has the better Multiplayer titles from how I look at it. 360 backwards compatibility doesn't include all titles though, but I believe there is a list on the official xbox site that lists compatible titles.

I would say the PS3, but I'm coming from the view of someone who also mostly games on a PC, and the two compliment each other better.

It probably includes all the ones worth caring about

I've got both and get a lot more game time out of my 360. Multi-platform games often run better on 360, it has a better online community despite having to pay for it, the user interface for the online marketplace is better and it gets most DLC sooner than PS3. I love my PS3 for its exclusives and blu-ray capabilities but I think the 360 is a better gaming device

Oh the fanboys you will get...
I know the X-box requires you to play online and the PS3 has free online but from what I hear the X-box online community is stronger (racism and childishness not withstanding). You can look at website for both to compare the hardware features to see which one you like (maybe you want play blurays?) and you can skim through there games libraries to see which one has better exclusives that you like. I'd suggest playing out a list of games to buy (thus forcing yourself to find the better exclusives) before buying one or the other and considering any hardware features that you really want before hand. Also, surprising asking a gaming forum about this general question is a bad idea because most of your replies will be fanboys. Do your own research for the best possible results.

Honestly, I think, all things even, go with the PS3. I personally have a 360, but most of the games I like are on both consoles now.

The biggest issue with the PS3 aside from price is the bugs. At least 75% of cross-platform games are buggier on the PS3 than 360 or PC, due to the different architecture. However, the hardware on the PS3 outstrips the 360 any day of the week.

get a high end gaming pc with steam. Saves you a lot to time and a lot trouble with all the restrictions of what you can and can not do on the console you legally bought, but if you really must choose a console go with a ps3, free online play, built in wifi, blue tooth, ability to avi. mpeg files, syncs up with windows media center to do pretty decent video streaming from your pc to the ps3. There is also a custom media server for the ps3 called "ps3 media server" which allows play back and access to any where in your hard-drive, you just need good pc to stream the videos/router as well. Also on the top side blu ray disc are much hard to scratch and play/load better than a standard dvd-r or dvd-dl.

I've had my 60Gb (backwards compatible) PS3 since launch and no issues to report besides playing Bethesda's games, which come with complimentary bug buffets. I haven't not been able to play any of my remaining 40+ games PS2 library on it. Ratchet and Clank is possibly my all time favourite series of games, and I can't recommend them highly enough. The best FPS's are now all cross platform and perform about equally (primarily because it's the same copy they use for both ports to save money), so unless you really want to play Halo 3, ODST and Reach, you're not missing out on anything. Oh Killzone 2 is pretty awesome, I haven't heard anything bad about 3 either, so you'll get those with PS3, so that's an FPS.

I also highly recommend the Uncharted games. Huge platforming awesomeness. Someone else mentioned the Sly Collection, if you haven't played Sly games, they're definitely worth the steal entry price for the HD remake collection.

So PS3...

Sorry if this sounds a bit apathetic towards the end, with great adjectives such as "huge". So tired :p

Honestly unless there are simply must have exclusives I would try out the controllers for both systems and settle on the one that you like best.

A lot of people discount this but the interface counts for a lot, and it's really (exclusives on both sides not withstanding) the only difference anymore. Also if online is important to you remember that Sony's is free (but a pain) and Microsoft's is not free (but quite accesible) If you ask me (I've tried both online services and was a beta for XBOX Live) neither online is worth paying for or going through the rigamarole to use as the experience is just....not as good as playing with friends and can be frustrating.

My own experience with the systems is that I owned a 360 (20G Pro, refurbished) for two years and then had to have the gain on the laser turned up. It's been a year since that happened and I have had no other issues, works like a dream ever since. Both of my roomates own PS3s (the originals or no later than 2nd wave) and have had them longer I think and one has had no issues, both love them, and the issues my one roomate has I think were pretty much caused by his inability to not fiddle with stuff internally, so I think he paddled his own canoe there and don't get me wrong he LOVES his canoe.

So you're fine as long as you aren't the kind of person who finds themselves watching YouTube videos at two in the morn about how to bake your PS3. Seriously I couldn't even watch.....

I hope this was helpful to you.

P.S. In the interest of full disclosure I tend to channel Jack Benny for some reason whenever I'm buying tech.

"So what's your least expensive system?"

"199? Not bad, not bad, say then what's your most expensive?"

"525? Really....really.....then what do you have for 210?"

Honestly, unless you're a child with no income, I really don't see a reason not to own both Systems. Each has their advantages.

For the PS3, you have the benefit of a BLU-ray player, free online, A number of good propriety games, and the ability to purchase and play a number of PS1 classics on your PS3.

The Xbox 360 has I think a much more user friendly interface, a more organized (although not free) online service, it tends to handle multiplatform games better than the PS3, and it tends to get DLC before the PS3.

Also, don't forget controllers. I find that I enjoy Shooters on the Xbox 360 more with it's controller, while I like Action and Adventure more on the PS3 with the Dual Shock 3.

I prefer my 360. But honestly, I don't think it really matters.

They are both good modern systems. Most games are on both systems. If you buy a 360, there are PS3 exclusives you can't play. If you buy a PS3 there are 360 exclusives you can't play. Just pick one.
(btw, 360 has good backwards compatibility)

Also, whichever console you go with, don't buy a used one, buy a new one. And get a warrantee. With electronics and computers, going new is better.
