Should I get a 360 or a PS3?

To all of those who said I'm in an odd place to be asking this: perhaps you should give your fellow escapists more credit. I expected numerous responses, some thoughtful and intelligent and well informed, others less telling and more fanboy. I've actually found most of them to be very thoughtful, so thanks.

I find it pretty easy to read a person's biases from their posts, and since I have biases of my own, that helps me come to a better conclusion. Most of you haven't posted unsupported opinions.

I don't care about the 12-year-old boy calling me "******" for camping, and I won't be buying a whole lot of new single player retail games. I am looking primarily for people-in-the-room-with-you multiplayer, and the occasional longer "quest" game to fill up the 12-hour on-call shifts where the phone DOESN'T ring. That, and older games I never got around to. And Megaman Universe (thankfully in this case I won't have to choose, if it comes out at all).

Thanks for all the input

also whoever said there'll be a replacement for the 360 soon is talking rubbish...
it'll be 2 and a half years at least if not 3 before microsoft release another console.
Actually there's good reason to believe MS is preparing the next console, that being said I do think MS have eyes on keeping the 360 going and make it more a casual machine, which is what we're seeing already with the new Valhalla revision being marketed heavily as "Kinect Ready", or bundled with the Kinect, so the Xbox 360 is definitely here to stay, while MS might come out with a true PS3 killer in about 1-2 years.

But yeah it is quite amazing how evenly matched these two consoles are.

You know, I have a 360, but in the current situation, I would suggest a PS3 simply because I feel that the 360 will be replaced by a new console fairly soon.

Though I do prefer the 360, I figure it's days are more numbered than the PS3.
Actually, Microsoft said they want the 360 to last another few years.
I prefer 360. If you want online and have budget issues, though, go for PS3, and I'll admit I was a little jealous about Uncharted 2 and Valve are screwing 360 and giving a bunch of exclusive portal 2 stuff to PS3. Overall though, I prefer 360, hence my choice.

Welp, I'm going to try and hold back my fanboyism, but we'll see how that goes.

....

The new 360's still fail (although a lot less than their predecessors). I've never heard of anybody I know who owns a PS3 experiencing a console killing issue.

....
Uhm no, they don't I can't find any data on that atleast, from what I can see it's going even better than Jasper which was almost over the issues.

The reason why I'm pretty sure it's not the case is because of the issue itself and how companies that have had to deal with it before(nVidia's so called Bump-gate) Have fixed it, and so did MS with the Die Shrink we saw with Jasper.

360 is clearly the best choice, it has some of the best games in recent history (Halo anyone?), And for COD fans everyone knows 360 gets all the new map packs first.

Ok, firstly I'm not a fanboy, as I have BOTH, an Xbox360 and a PS3.

I have the Xbox first and loved it. Great graphics (really sharp, in some cases a bit sharper than PS3). Had loads of fun on it. But it RROD'd (broke) on me 3 times in 2-3 years. Having to send it away for 3 weeks at a time became no fun. It even crashed a few days before the launch of Street Fighter 4 (I had the game posted to me the next day and couldn't play it for 3 weeks whilst Microflops 'fixed' my Xbox.

I got tired and decided never to buy an Xbox game again.

I bought a PS3 slim when Unchartered 2 came out, and was blown away. Not just by the gameplay, but also the FREE and easy online options the PS3 gives. I had never played onlone wiith hte Box because I needed an Xbox antenna, and then a membership fee etc.

The PS3 has been my main console for the past 2 years and I Fu**ing love it. Great exclusives, great features too.

I say get a PS3 mate. But if you get an Xbox360 make sure its a new one. The oldies were sold broken.

Honestly... look at the exclusives and make your choice from that.
Before late last year though the 360-versions of the multiplatform-stuff really just worked better though since... well since programming for Sony's consoles have always been ***** and a half. According to almost all the developers to work on the platforms.

Or get a Ps2. Way cheaper and one of the biggest back-catalogues of great games ever.
Well, and more shovel-ware than the Wii since that comes with a huge game-library.

If it's backwards compatibility you want; the 360 does a good job.

For modern exclusives; PS3 is now your choice.

Also I don't think PS3 ever had a 50% or + failure rate.
Luckily, neither has the 360.

To the OP:

Almost every multiplatform game is better on the 360. The exclusives are decent. Xbox Live is better than PSN.

PS3 does have better exclusives generally.

An interesting choice.... close, but i'd go with the 360.

don't get me wrong i love the ps3 and everything but both consoles are going to be replaced by newer ones sometime soon, and 360 has a wider variety of games to play plus it has its indie/arcade games ect.

i own both, 360 is far better if you like playing with people online.
i second this. i barely touch my ps3. if a game is available on both platforms i'll always go for the 360 version.
ps3 online service is free but xbox live is much better and i mean it doesn't cost that much. the 360 is a much more social console, i find myself in a party with lots of friends even when i'm playing a solo campaign. just the fact that the 360 comes with a headset and the ps3 doesn't tells you enough.

plus i absolutely love the arcade games the 360 has to offer, there are such great games in there, retro stuff as well. and if you want to go really retro, check out the game room http://www.next-gen.biz/features/preview-xbox-360-game-room

For the original 360 I've heard 35% to 55% failure. That's the ORIGINAL original one though. Jasper-based 360's are wayyyy better than the past versions.
