I have 30$ left from christmas and I had my eye on Sins. Should I get trinity for cheaper, or Rebellion for more?

I bought it but didn't really get into it. I'd say get Trinity. If you don't warm to it either you'll waste less, and if you love it then they've earned your money when you buy Rebellion. And you might catch that in a sale.

I'd say go for Rebellion if you want the base game at its best.

I'd go for Trinity if you avidly add mods to your games as most mods are for Entrenchment 1.51
Either way its a great game!

I don't know how to mod, so it's still up in the air.

Which one has a better single player game?

It's not about knowing how to mod, it's just looking up online for mods to download and then installing them.

Don't worry about the single player, because each expansion is the base game plus every expansion before it, so the single-player only gets better. Just look up what order the expansions came out in, and buy the latest version that you want to pay for, or the version that has the mods for it. Again, don't be shy about letting mods into your calculations, installing them is only marginally more complicated than installing any old game, just be sure to read the readme that comes with it to be sure.

Buy Rebellion. Just be warned though, Sins is an INCREDIBLY slow paced game. I got turned right off it thanks to the hours of waiting around doing nothing I had to sit through to get everything into position. I'm pretty sure it's still a good game (based on the amount of praise it gets), but if you're not a patient person, avoid it and get Endless Space instead.

I am eagerly reading the responses to this thread, but to complicate things further you could also look at Homeworld 2 if you want a faster paced game more focused upon the battles.

Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are one of the corner stones of the space rts genre. They are the Ocarina of Time and Metal gear Solid's of space RTS. Endless space is a newer one but it captures the same feeling.

Homeworld 2 is okay... but I think the 1st one is the better..but I'm biased since it was one of the first dark/serious games I've ever played... that an it was very difficult.

So... you want fighting and action? not necessarily fleet building and resource management?

Well I bought the first one not that long ago and it's seems like it'd be great but I don't know how to play it... It physically hurts my brain with the sheer amount of shit you have to track

OP if you want action you might not want a straight up RTS or 4X RTS like Sins.

A game like this one is more on tactics and utilizing what resources you have, instead of constantly gathering more

If you go for Sins then the latest -> Rebellion, because it has all other content in it.
But the game is only single player in terms of bots, there is absolutely no campaign, it is skirmish only against AI or filthy hummies, the offer a ton of variety in terms of multiplayer (probably more then any triple A game) but it is just multiplayer type games.

And if you want a space RTS campaign then Homeworld 1&2 are the correct suggestions, stuff doesn't get much more epic then that.

I really like sins. Personally I think that trinity is the best version- it has all the best mods, and doesn't have the issue of titans, which I think are rather unbalanced. It's an RTS for people who find other RTS games too stressful, and avoids all the split second decision making that you find in other games in the genre. It is a lot slower paced, except perhaps in the combat. Don't go into it expecting a 4X game though, as while it has certain elements of 4X games it streamlines a lot of it and ignores the rest. GalCiv does 4X much better.

Buy Rebellion if you do, you get the other versions of the game built into it. And you get titans. Like this one.

What about real time space combat? I don't really want to have to do so much management with supplies and stuff

Just throwing a recommendation for Sword of the Stars II, yes there can be some bugs, but the devs are working on it. The turn based part feels the most like leading an empire out of any game I've played, and the real time combat is interesting and just fun to watch at times.
