Should I get Skyrim?

So, unlike everyone else, I didn't sell my soul for Skyrim on the 11th, and heres why: I have no prior knowledge of the Elder Scrolls series. Oh, and mother dearest won't allow anything over T in our household, but I'm fairly certain I can wheel and deal my way out of that.

But heres the question, Escapists, is it possible to really enjoy it without ever having touched an Elder Scrolls game?

You don't need to have played any of the previous games to enjoy this one. The only enjoyment you would get out of having played a previous game is how much better this one is.

On a more serious note, the only thing I could possibly see mother dearest getting irritated about is the whole intense violence thing, and I'm confident in my debating abilities.

I didn't like Oblivion, know nothing of the other ES games, not a huge fan of the fantasy genre (Song of Ice & Fire aside) but am enjoying Skyrim. I'm not in fanboy raptures over it but suspect it will keep me busy for a good long while.

The ESRB didn't exist until I was 15, and I played Doom before then. That would be the only M game I played, but it wasn't against the nonexistent ESRB at the time : P

Don't forget to mention to her the bestiality. Lizards, Cats, and humans getting married is a touchy subject!

Also, you can marry dude lizards, if that's your thing. Might want to be safe and leave that part out of it.

To be honest, for an 'M' rated titled, it's about as violent as some 'T' rated titles out there, and the kill level doesn't hold a candle to games like Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3, so make sure to point that out. Also, ask which is worse: A game about a grown man dressing up like a psychopath to beat up a crimelord, a traumatized scientist and a government official, or a game about the intricacies of living in a time of war and religious oppression as a savior figure?

As for the Elder Scrolls games in particular, their stories are seperate unto themselves. You only learn through the loading screens that

the main story of Oblivion, and the emperor's death, took place over 200 years ago

and the entire continent is under the control of a group of fanatics.
