You only have one month to go back to your previous OS after upgrading to 10.

As an OS there's not much of a reason not to upgrade. Especially if you're coming from 8, it's more or the same with extra polish around a lot of the weird bits polished up with a minimum of new problems or compatibility issues.

If you're coming from 7, still going to be a bit weird with the meshing of traditions programs and newer windows apps, and all the touch inspired menus. Might be worth waiting.

Besides that, main reasons to avoid it are just the occasional upgrade issues you here about, and the privacy concerns others above have been talking about, if you care about that sort of thing (I do not).

Upgrade to Windows 10, try it for a week or two and then, if you don't like Windows 10 you can always use the built in "Return to Windows 7 / 8" feature and bam, you're back to your previous OS.
Wait, you can do that? I'm pretty PC illiterate-could you please tell me a good spot to find out where the button is and any other tips online so that I can check out 10? I'm curious, but mildly scared that it'll bork my PC and I'm too dumb to fix it :(
This video shows you how, http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/how-to-get-rid-of-windows-10-and-return-to-windows-7-or-8-91363996690648

Remember you must do it before a month has past since the upgrade.

Do not get Windows 10 yet. Wait til they remove some of the big brother stuff, and more to the point until there's a reason, as in games which benefit from DirectX 12

The ads are removable, some of the other stuff is too, but updates are forced.

The Windows 10 prompt keeps lingering on my taskbar, and I'm wondering if I should upgrade or not.

I'm mainly interested in mainly two things:

1) Will Windows 10 improve my game's performance and make getting 60 fps easier?

2) Will Windows 10 break some of my older games, stuff I've got on GOG like KOTOR 1 and 2, Thief 2, Deus Ex etc.?

Should I upgrade to Windows 10?

Also feel free to share your experiences with Windows 10, both good and bad.
At first I wasn't overly big on Win10 because of some of the changes they made. A lot of the major advertised things are total garbage, but can be disabled. Cortana's a search-bot and the bastard child of the Humorless Now, and the (unknown to me) Siri. Every command I attempted to give it other than "Run Steam." has completely failed. Including commands like "Run XCOM" "Open Firefox" "Go to My Documents" "Shut down." "Search Google for Escapist." These all lead to Bing searches.

The Start menu for those who prefer it, can be reverted back to the start screen, but thanks to a few new shortcuts on the far left, it's more difficult to navigate with a keyboard. Horray. The new styled Start menu is more of a cluster-fuck than many would prefer, thanks to some shortcuts to "apps"[footnote]Have I ever mentioned how much I hate the bastard word, "app?"[/footnote] that you cannot remove. Removing some of them just means they'll return later, which, to me, is fucking infuriating. The changes to the start menu is lose-lose.

So far, I feel the occasional hitch. Transferring files can lock me up for a minute on rare occasions. Also, the upgrade wizard does a very piss-poor job of actually assessing incompatible software. You have more work ahead of you than advertised. I took the route of upgrading, and then format/reinstall after a nasty situation with a bad download. [footnote]Imagine if the hoover dam just opened out, and shit just pushed right on through. That's what happened to me. This is why you check comments on your... Uuh, "managed downloads."[/footnote] I'm mind-blowingly happy that I did that format. 10 runs far better with a clean install than the upgrade. However, the upgrade is required to transfer and update your license to your MS account. Fuck.

My porn folder isn't happy, but at least Google Safe-search doesn't kick in when you type things like, "Camping Tent" in.

With that in mind there are some positives.

I often power on the bar, and flick the button on my computer. This gave me a few minutes to do whatever I want. Get a snack, take a dump, get my notepad, clean a little. Windows 10 is much, much faster to boot than 8 was on my machine. That's kind of nice. I guess I won't be snacking as much.

The virtual desktop stuff is actually really good. Play games and doing work, it's just right there. Minecraft never has to compete for real-estate again when it takes two-clicks and it has it's own space. I thought I'd never use it, as I have two monitors, but here I am. Xcom and it's music mod is on Desktop 2. And a letter to my possible future employer is on desktop 3. Reddit and you? Numero-uno.

To answer your question? Between Xcom:LW, Payday2, Dirty Bomb, Natural Selection 2 and Elite: Dangerous? I have not noticed a performance increase like I did with every other OS jump. (XP to Vista, Vista to 7, 7 to 8...) If you want it solely for the performance upgrade, you might not experience it. My GF states that things are running nicer for her on her high end gaming laptop though, so results may vary. I have a budget, yet well built gaming machine. Custom builds often have adverse effects when doing such an upgrade. Still though, don't expect a massive boost.

Windows 10 uses the same compatibility engine that 8 did. If it ran on any prior OS as far back as XP, then everything should be fine. You have the option to right click on something, go to Properties, and then compatibility. We're not using OSX here, you should be able to run your older games with some light tinkering, likely the same amount you'd have to if you ran it on 7 or 8.

A few other notes to consider? You're mentioning some really old games. Double check the specs of your machine and the requirements of the OS BEFORE you go through with the upgrade. A free OS is actually freaking nice. I got 8 for free, and I found it better than 7.[footnote]Yeah, see that? I can take change. I don't whinge when something looks funny.[/footnote] Consider an upgrade if you don't meet the requirements for 10. Consider this upgrade even if you don't want 10.

If you get 10, and don't like it? You have 30 days to go through 10's settings, and revert back to your previous OS. When you upgrade, you still have a lot of information left over from your previous OS, most of which you don't see, so this is quite possible. Be warned: This is only available if you upgrade, and not format. I no longer have this option.

That's about it. I'm a bit of a Windows fanboy, so if anyone has any options about configuration, I'll see what I can do. 10 is still an upgrade, it's the least impressive one I've ever seen, but it's still an upgrade. I'm actually kind of surprised we don't see more people whinging about how it's "not designed for Desktop PC's" considering I've seen a few things like Phone Companion. This is the 1st time I've actually looked at something in my OS or interface, and I've said, "This is not for me at all. And I don't think there's any way I can remove it."

I have two anecdotal instances for you to work off of here. For extra fun they are opposite to each other in nearly all respects.

On my own machine, a recently built budget gamer, I had a flawless update to Win 10. The only issue was that my wifi card was not compatible with Win 10 and I may need to replace it as the manufacturer is in no hurry at all to put out new drivers. I am not a fan of it's menu layout but it has elements that I am not completely against. Set the correct privacy settings and you are good to go. Works well and I have had no backwards compatibility issues in the games i have thus far played.

my best friend on the other hand recently upgraded to a top of the line gaming rig that can tapdance circles around my machine. The win 10 upgrade seems to have dropped, misplaced and possibly completely lost numerous drivers. it's performance has tanked to the point where my machine outperforms it and that is simply not right. the windows update service is failing to function correctly as well. I should point out that his machine is damn near brand new and mine has close to a years worth of junk on it.

Choose your poison. Hard to say if you should upgrade as I did and risk what happened to my friend or go the clean install route. Get it you must fairly soon though. The newer versions of Direct x are not going to keep being supported by Win 8 forever and Win 7 is already falling behind.

Not sure I understand. Are you asking, if 1 year after installing windows 10, and the "free" period is over, can you still revert back to 7/8? To that, I dunno. My guess: you can, but now you have an OS that needs a year of back patching. And have you installed anything since having win 7/8 last, that may not run once you revert.

I just got mine and watched a review. I'm pretty excited to try it. Win 7 is great. Why ever go 8 ? But 10? Looks like a step in the right direction.
What I was meant to say is that after reverting back to your previous OS from Win10, can you at some point go back to Win 10 via one year free promo?

I.e is it possible to be an indecisive git?

I believe so. Microsoft WANT you on windows 10.

I might be misremembering but I believe you only get the rollback for 30 days after you upgrade.

For the love of Sithis don't quote me on that though. *checks google* yep that seems to be the case. Decide quick they will take theoption away pretty fast.

I'd think so too. Some of the best digital download stuff out there remembers you bought a thing. Example: I can delete a Steam Game, but re-install it again later. Same with Amazon tunes.

I'd think Microsoft would be smart enough to do the same. And yes, they want you on 10. They appear to be using the model we're seeing from a lot of android games: "free, but we want your information."

I recommend not upgrading yet. I did a clean install and I'm getting all kinds of weird little problems: First it kept disconnecting me from the Internet (I ran Linux from a USB stick to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue), it forgets I installed some applications, it won't let programs set themselves as default programs for certain file types (you have to go to the control panel and do everything manually), and now for some reason it won't display thumbnails for videos.

I'll reinstall Win7 when I get the time to do it. I recommend not installing Win10 yet. Maybe in a few more months. Or never.
