I've heard great things about games like silent hill and eternal darkness, but survival horror's just something I've never gotten into. Probably the closest things to horror I've played are RE 4, Bioshock, and the Ravenholm bit in HL 2. Those didn't scare me one bit, but I did like the tense, slightly scary moments. Also, I accidentally ruined Silent Hill 2 by finding out what really killed Jaaaames' wife. Should I try a horror game? Is SH 2 still worth it?

Hells yeah it is ;) The atmosphere is still very scary and continous throughout the game. Also, if you want to try really scary survival horror, I recommend Penumbra and Amnesia. :)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

You want proper scares? That game will deliver.

As for Silent Hill 2, I cannot comment as I have not played it. But I have heard many good things about it.

Go on!

You'll probably still enjoy it. The important thing is that you give it a try.

Silent Hill 2 was a great game... I wouldn't say that silent hill 2 is the scariest of the series(It still packs a good punch), but the characters and the story line is what delivers...

If you haven't played it I suggest you do...

other than that, all the other silent hills are slowly got crapper and crapper...

Silent Hill 1 was average, Silent Hill 2 was excellent, Silent Hill 3 was good, Silent Hill The Room was average... don't even bother with the other silent hills other than the ones I just mentioned..

It depends what scares you.

If you're the kind that will shit bricks over someone shouting at you from a dark corner, then don't bother.

If you're the type that gets scared by hearing a noise, looking for it's origin, finding nothing, feeling safe, then turning the next corner to find something trying to munch your face off...go for it.

Silent Hill 2 is the best of the bunch, in my opinion. The others are mere copies of it. I'm utterly biased as to whether or not you should play it, though, because I love horror entertainment.

Yes. Just be prepared for some seriously creepy atmosphere, severely disturbing imagery, and when Pyramid Head shows up RUN LIKE THE HOUNDS OF HELL ARE BEHIND YOU!

I disagree... the problem is the others aren't mere copies of it! I do understand that sticking to the exact same gameplay can wreck a game.. but they have Americanized it to much and also they are going for the whole "shock" factor. I loved the whole psychologically fucked up thing they were going for in number 2. Number 3 was alright and I think it was heading in the right direction, in fact the puzzles were amazing (please bring back mega hard fucked up puzzles please!), I just hated the characters in number 3 =(.

Number 4 was creative, no puzzles ruined it for me though, also mystery to it was kind of obvious relative to the other ones. The thing I loved about previous one's was that it left you wondering but at the same time contemplating.

Silent Hill is a creepy game and was more thought out then Resident Evil. SH2 was very good, won't give it away but some think there is a physicological conection with two characters.

Eternal Darkness is good although now dated, but still fun!bath scene anyone?

Even games that don't mean to scare make you jump...stupid T-Rex in the original Tomb Raider...now I look a fool

Dude, go on the internet and get Fatal Frame for the PS2. It is by far the scariest game I have ever played and the only one I have ever had to take a break from playing because I was getting too worked up. You actually don't want to go into the next room sometimes when you are playing.

Resident Evil is all about plain zombie killing, no smart thought out story dialog. When I think of resident evil all I think of are those nerdy black shirted guys who wear slip knot shirts and are slightly anorexic.

The first three Silent Hill games are definitely worth checking out.
SH 2 definitely has the best story of the three, and isn't a part of the story that runs between 1 and 3.
If you only played one of these games, I'd go with SH 2.

This might be another topic in itself, but I'm curious about a mod. Dear Esther (if extra credits is to be trusted) is scary, and I want to play it, but I am a pathetic PC gaming n00b. Will someone tell me a reputable site where I can download it without too much PC knowledge?

I can say that I am not anorexic or a lover of Slipknot, but I do like wearing black. Resident Evil was good untill Code Veronica, that was ok but over the top, then it got rubbish. I still like the orginal, cheesy lines and all that!
