Should I just sell all my DVD's and switch to Blu-Ray?

So ever since getting my PS3 I've been buying movies on BR exclusively. So far I have about 12 movies on BR with plans on getting more.

But I also have a bunch of DVD's. I haven't really touched them since getting my PS3. Recently me and the folks decided to have a yard sale some time in the future and went through my DVD collection, picking out movies I don't want to sell. But I started thinking that maybe I should just try and sell all of them. I mean I rarely if ever watch any of them. If I want to watch a movie these days I either use Netflix or pick a movie out of my BR collection.

The only thing really holding me back is the uncertainty that BR is really going to take over the market, become the new thing and phase out DVD's all together like it did to VHS. I'm just a little worried that I'm going to sell my movies and the next day the entertainment industry is going to announce "Hey, the BR thing didn't quite work out so we're all switching back to DVD which means no more BR releases."

So, sell them or keep them?

I personally would keep them, the difference between Blue Ray and DVD are not good enough to make me switch but this is me.

Now, I'm probably going to pull some hate for this, but I see no quality difference between Blu-Ray and DVD. So I'd keep the DVD's. And not touch Blu-Ray. Not only that, but if you've got any movies which weren't popular and didn't get BR rereleases, keep them. Maybe ten or twenty years down the line you'll see DVD collectors, the same way we have people collecting NES games now. At which point some old DVD's might be handy.

But don't worry about BR not taking over the market, it's already pushing DVD's off of their shelves in most Best Buys.

I see no difference in BR and DVD, not to mention it costs alot more, so frankly i hate BR.

No, only certain films have any appreciable difference, some films even look more grainy (like Starship Troopers).

I got a little system for myself:
> Pre 2000, not going on BluRay, ever, very little point
> Standard film - DVD
> Film with lots of special effects, like Iron Man, Captain America, Ice Age, Kung Fu Panda etc, worth BluRay

I frankly don't understand why you think you need to sell your DVDs to embrace bu-ray, every BR player I've seen can play DVDs and that's unlikely to change for a long time (I'd say when this is phased out blue-ray's replacement will be just around the corner) so yeah go blue-ray, but don't sell the DVDs unless you just don't think you'll watch those movies any more.

It is quite possible that many films will not be republished on Blu-ray. As was the case with the transition from VHS to DVD.

It's not like dvd and vcr, the only time I buy blu ray is if I'm a huge fan of a certain movie

Don't sell your DVDs for Blu Rays. That's just ridiculous.

DVDs can be played on a Blu Ray player, this wasn't the case with the VHS -> DVD transition.

Only by Blu Ray disks in preference to DVDs when there will be a genuine benefit to the increased resolution i.e. movies that have a lot of special effects or a visual theme.

Personally i dont think its worth the extra cost for blue-rays, but im a student and cant get dvds unless its cheap anyways, so blue-rays kinda pointlesss for me
Plus as ull be replacing them, ull basically be paying twice for the same thing, not really worth it unless u really really like that film and the slightly enhanced details might improve that enjoyment, its probably cheaper and easier not to bother "upgrading" too blue-ray

I mean the only reason I bought Star Wars on Blu Ray yesterday was becuse it was going cheep,$40 down from almost $60(Plus staff discount) and I've got some movies on Blu Ray, Tron Legacy, hellboy 2, Lord of the rings and a few others but I think in the last year I've purchased more DVD's even when the blu ray version was avaliable.

I did. I sell all my regular DVDs as I switch them over to blu-ray discs. I can see the difference. *shrugs* Besides, if you know where to look, blu-ray DVDs are the same price as regular DVDs. I rarely, if ever, spend more than $10.00 on a blu-ray movie that's mint or still in the original shrink wrap.

I say no, just because you won't get much for your DVDs. Nowhere near enough to compensate for how much the Blu-rays will cost.

No, keep them. Some DVDs aren't availible on Blu-Ray, so keep them. Seriously.

You don't want to do that. There are movies in the VHS format that you can't find on DVD or Blu Ray so it's a near certainty that you'll come across movies you want that won't be available on Blu Ray. Keep your formats nice and diverse.

Since it's my understanding that most Blu-ray players including the PS3, can play ordinary DVDs, I'd hang on to them. Why replace what isn't broke?

I understand the allure of blu-ray. "I can't see the difference"...are you fuckin' blind?!

I wouldn't off your whole DVD collection, upgrade the films that you love and will watch often and keep the rest...they're really not worth much anyway.

Keep what you can't get on Blu-Ray or might want to lend to other people or take with you on a trip or something. Also, keep anything that has a terrible Blu-Ray, example Return of the Jedi because George Lucas couldn't help but ruin it even further. Keep stuff that might be missing features on the Blu-Ray as well or don't whatever.

As soon as I upgrade to Blu-Ray/HD TV, I'm probably going to keep all my DVD's, a lot of what I have isn't on Blu-Ray or won't be or has a weak transfer (Various anime titles). Plus, I love the portability of DVD's.

OP, I think you should think about why you don't watch them anymore. If the answer is "because video quality" you should really think about whether you actually like the movie or not. Or at least just ask yourself honestly "would I watch this if I had it on bluray?"

And then you will have your answer.

...I still haven't gotten rid of any of my VHS anime. >.>
