Should I just sell all my DVD's and switch to Blu-Ray?

I have sold several of my dvds and bought BR copies of a choice selection of my favorite films. I keep all versions of my favorite films, though. I wouldn't suggest selling your entire dvd collection, but go through it and find stuff that you never watch anymore, or stuff you can't ever see yourself wanting to watch again. With me and my 600+ dvds, it never hurts to thin the herd a little bit.

Also, ignore everyone who claims that there isn't much of a visual difference. Apparently, there is a large population of the visually impaired here at the escapist. There is a HUGE difference. BR films look a million bajillion times better than dvd films.

Why? Pretty sure the PS3 plays DVD's to. Anyways, I don't care for Blu-Ray, I only own one Blu-Ray movie for my PS3.

I'd keep your DvDs. Blu Ray won't be taking over the market ala the VHS to DvD conversion. DvDs will remain the standard for some time to come while Blu Rays will continue to exist as a higher quality option to DvD for those that want it. Plus, as has already been said with most Blu Ray players upscaling your DvDs you really don't notice a huge difference between DvD and Blu Ray except on certain more effect driven movies.

I was in the same place as you a few years ago and opted to keep my sizable DvD collection. If you are like me you put a LOT of your time and money into your DvDs and you won't get near that back out of them. Sure you may not watch them that often but I've seen a few different friends sell off their DvD collection in favor of converting to Blu Ray and they've all regretted it.

You have to understand that while you can get a hell of a bargain anymore on DvDs Blu Rays cost substantially more often times for little, if any, upgrades. First of all if it isn't something made in the past handful of years getting it on Blu Ray is a waste pure and simple. Television shows on Blu Ray are insanely expensive and offer nothing of added value other than the price. Furthermore, if you enjoy extras you are going to find better extras on DvD more often than not.

Your better option is to buy only the Blu Rays that are worth owning, and there certainly are Blu Rays worth owning. The Dark Knight is beyond amazing on Blu Ray and the Star Trek reboot is another movie that is absolutely beautiful. If you happen to already own any of your movies on DvD you can either keep them if they have extras worth watching or put them aside and sell them on craigslist when you get a pile of 10-20.

The bottom line is DvD isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Blu Ray isn't a medium that is suited to every movie so it's silly to upgrade totally. Hang on to what you have and buy Blu Rays because they are worth it not just to replace your DvDs.

Or they don't know how to hook up their players properly. Probably got their bluray player going through a rat's nest of cables ending in an RF adapter plugged into their tube TV's antenna port! XD

In Long: No because re-buying movies that you already have is dumb. Speaking as someone who DOES see the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD I prefer to buy movies in Blu-Ray, but I have 100 or so DVD's, so instead of re-buying all my movies which is nonsensically expensive, I just buy new movies in Blu-Ray. Because the difference isn't SO great that I want to spend ANOTHER $30 on Fight Club.

EXception: Lord of the Rings. You should ABSOLUTELY sell your old LotR DVD's and buy the extended Blu-Ray cut that just came out it is incredibly worth it.

DVDs are usually half the price that Blu-Ray discs are. Easy choice for me.

I get blue rays for movies that are heavy on the cgi or animated and dvd for the rest, sometimes i just wait it out and they go down to dvd price so yeah swoop in haha

btw star wars does look great on blu ray

Nope. Blu Ray has almost no difference for most movies. Unless of course, you own 2 copys, one blu ray, one DVD, 2 HD 1080p tv's, 2 PS3s, and watch them side by side.

I own over 200 movies. All legitimately bought. I own only one Blu Ray movie. Coraline. And the only reason why i own it on Blu Ray, is because it came with free 3D glasses.

I personally would keep them, the difference between Blue Ray and DVD are not good enough to make me switch but this is me.

Agreed. I've seen a few Blu Rays and they're kinda neat for action flicks or movies with a lot of special visual effects, but DVD isn't going anywhere for a long time, especially in this economy.

I only buy Blu rays now since I can tell the difference of picture and audio quality compared to the DVDS I own.

I would hang on to the DVDS since most Blu-Ray players offer upscaling.
