I've been a huge fan of the fallout series since F3. I haven't put as much time into FNV becuase I've been letting a friend borrow it, but I'm hoping summer will give me enough to fix that.

Now, I've been curious and I've been reading things about the games. Should I play the predecing games? Which ones should I play? Or should I just read the wikia pages. I hear that the intro to the first one is really good.

I tried playing the first one after loving FO3.

I could never get into it. I don't really know what it was, but I just felt really underwhelmed with it and gave up after a few hours.

Maybe I should give it another try...

I don't know, do you want to play them? They are, well, a bit different. For example there isn't a first person perspective. Also, they are similar - SPECIAL and all that. They are lots of fun if you find them fun. As Daystar pointed out, if you don't find them fun, then...don't play them. Obvious, I know. Give the first one a try, I suppose, no harm in that. If you like it, then great.

Well, duh, Fallout 1 and Fallout 2.

I would recommend Fallout 1 and then 2 but it really does depend on how you buy the games. I think you should try them, they do offer a lot of freedom in what you can do. I never really loved them but they can be deeply engrossing.

So if you can try them for cheap, do so.

It looks just like Diablo 2, gameplay-wise. And that was a great game.

Well there's also Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel.

I just watched the intro for the first two. They're decent.

I've tried playing Fallout both 1 and 2 many times.

Once downloaded, once bought and once from GoG for free.

It's never really clicked with me.

No...not really. I cringe any time somebody says "well it looks like Diablo" about a top down isometric game. I mean, yeah, I suppose it is somewhat close to it but really, it's like comparing a calculator to a computer. Yeah, both their functions are basically doing some maths.

Tactics isn't as good. I don't own consoles, so I've never tried Brotherhood of Steel. I do hear some mixed opinions about it. I suppose you'll either love it or hate it.

Hmmm, I wouldn't recommend them. If you loved Fallout 3 (which was awful) you'll probably hate 1 and 2 (which are brilliant).

I recommend them, but only if you are tolerant of turn based games. They have a wonderful story if you can deal with the turned based things. They're some of my favorite games.

I would definitely reccomend them, however, be prepared because Fallout 2 is one of the hardest games I've ever played

Fallout 3 is more Oblivion than Fallout to be honest, but FNV is much closer to the original games so you should really play that

You could try playing the old games, they were awesome, but the VERY dated graphics and interface might make playing them quite hard. If you can get past that however, you will enjoy some of the best gaming has to offer.

Also Fallout Tactics is really not representative of the series and is a pretty crappy game overall. It starts out fine, but the encounters devolve to getting your whole party destroyed from 3 screens away by any enemy you encounter and you basically have to rely on luck to not get hit.

I don't know. I liked Fallout 3, but I found it difficult to get into the first ones. I appreciate them for what they are and what they stand for, but the actual gameplay is just too dull. Plus, I always found it difficult to get through the opening part of the game. The caves and the twons and the desert all just felt...bland.

Similar to you I was introduced to the series with fallout 3.
I loved the game but also started to love the series lore, reading it from wikis and other places... As such I got NV and fo1 and 2.
I don't regret it for a second.
After playing the entire series I'd have to say that Fallout scrapes in as a favourite with FO3 close behind.
That said I like the classic rpg thing so if that's really not for you I'd really only suggest playing it if you really love the themes and stories of fallout. Even then it can be jarring at first.

Oh and good luck if you do end up trying it out.

Just letting you know, it's nothing like Diablo 2. They aren't even remotely similar.

As far as if you should play them or not, I'd recommend trying New Vegas first. It was a lot closer to the original games in terms of story and presentation. If you find that you enjoyed the game more than Fallout 3, you'll probably like the originals, if you don't mind the turn-based gameplay. If instead, you prefer the gameplay and tone of Fallout 3, the originals might not be your thing.
