Should I re-buy Demon's Souls?

Hey all, I usually hate these kind of threads, but I'm going to be a total hypocrite and make one.
As the title explains, I'm wondering if I should buy Demon's Souls again. I traded it in for Little Big Planet back in January, simply because it was too hard. I didn't have the time to sink into the game to get good at it, so off it went.
But now I find myself kind of missing the game (I know... this is why I usually NEVER trade-in) and could buy it for under £15. I'll also start a hefty break from university soon, so I'll have more time to put into it.

So my main question is... Is patience really a big factor in this game? If I put enough time into it, would I be able to get far in it?(I'm an average gamer, never usually go higher than normal difficulty wise)
Or is the difficulty in this game just for those with mad skills?

Personally I just dont like the game because of the difficulty, its not Ultra hard its just unforgiving, its really a trial and error game, took me about 10 times to just do the 1 stage because I was mostly dieing one shot, either from a charge attack from a pikemen or near explosives barrel that I had no idea there were explosive.
The game has a big grindy feel and require to work hard just to level up your stat
the game is ok in general

I haven't played it myself but I know people who aren't particularly outstanding at games who've got far in Demon's Souls. (Although admittedly not completed it, as far as I know.)
If you enjoy it, you're going to want to try hard at it, and once you manage to get good at it it's going to be so darn satisfying.

Like... uh... learning to play an instrument or something. :p

It's not hard, it's just unforgiving. I'd suggest getting it again if only because you get an amazing feeling when you finally kill the boss of the level and use your hard earned souls.

It's really all about patience. The game is brutal but if you stick to it you will get through it.

The game is the very defintion of fair.

If you die, it's your own fault, but yes, it can seem very unforgiving. Just make sure you spend souls often.

And read this wiki, if there's one thing this game does terribly, it is telling players about the nuances of the game. I didn't even know how to spend boss demon souls until I read this.

Indeed it is. I highly recommend buying it again, it's my third favourite game of all-time, it's really an amazing feeling, when you learn the tactics of a boss and actually get one down. It's true, there is a lot of trial and error, and when you start the game, very little is explained and most is left up to the player to explore.

Anyway, if you pick it up, me and a bunch of other people on this site will be more than happy to help you. Threads on the game pop up from time to time, with people asking for advice and such. I have a link here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.265256-Demons-Souls#10080660 to one of the posts I've written on the subject.

Other than that, we've made a group in anticipation of Dark Souls, the spiritual successor to the game, here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Dark-Souls if you want, you're welcome to join, we mostly use it for keeping up with news on Dark Souls, but as said above, people in the group are more than willing to help you out.

In a nutshell.

The game likes to set you up with traps and punish you for mistakes. Get yourself a good shield and spear, take your time, and keep your thumb over the dodge button.

Oh, and make sure you never, ever equip too much armor. If your equip weight is too high, you dodge like a fat flopping cat.

Once you're in line with the game's particular rhythm, things get easier.

The game doesn't actually reward grinding that much. The challenges in the game aren't made much easier by pumping up stats, but are rather made easier because you learn the timing for bosses and the layout of the levels. Furthermore, the acquisition of non-consumable items and spells involve no grinding. You also have enough consumable items without grinding in most cases.

It's not that there's no grinding whatsoever - there can be, if you want to get a little edge - but the grinding spots are lucrative enough that anything that you need outside of high levels can be gotten in a matter of minutes.

I will say, though, that the weapon chunks for some of the upgrade paths are rare, and you can spend a while killing enemies to get them. But that's just if you don't want to hunt down crystal geckos who only spawn a few times per spot per playthrough.

This isn't Disgaea or WoW. Whenever you die, it's not because your stats weren't good enough, it's because You Screwed Up. Grinding can give you a bit more leeway, but it's nowhere near the amount that you get in most RPGs.

Closer on-topic, I'd consider it quite worth buying again. I played through most of it on a friend's PS3, then I bought my own PS3 largely for it.

Yeah that game is just fucking awesome. It's hard at first, but when you adapt your playstyle to a more cautious, patient approach you can normally get through it easily. In my game I had very little trial and error, in fact I remember going through a whole world without dying once simply because I patiently learnt the enemies attack patterns and then could easily dispatch them.

The game should be easier than it was a year ago- mainly due to the lack of automated world tendancy shifts, and I think that anybody still playing the game is one who has beaten it a few times already. Long story short- All worlds are pretty much on pure white server tendancy which basically makes the game easier.

The game is an excersize of patience as well, but also how aware of things you are. Most enemies will die as fast as you, one or two strikes. You have to fight SMART, and also abuse the stupidity of enemy AI. Enemies can usually die to the same things you can. Your greatest threat will probably be invading black phantoms, but that seems to be fairly uncommon anyways.

I think you should go for it, and give the wiki a read if you want an easier time. I would reccomend starting with the Royal, makes the game alot easier as well. I picked up the game earlier this year and dont regret it. It kind of makes me wish I picked it up far earlier when it was released so I could actually experience said "Soul crushing difficulty" as it was at release... And probably experience more of the multiplayer aspects with greater frequency outside of the messages people leave.

Good luck! And definitely check out the Demon's Souls wiki if you are getting frustrated. It is a ton of help.

Have fun with it! It's easily one of my favorite games and probably last year's best game in my eyes. It's tough no doubt, especially when you're just starting. It took me a whole night of gaming just to get past that very first slime boss and try getting to the 2nd one... The next night I think I managed to beat Phalanx. After that it got a tad easier as I was able to upgrade some stats. I now have that first character (a Knight) at SL135 or so, NG++ (beat the game twice).

Use the wiki, by the way. The game is shit at explaining what does what. Especially character and world tendancies (black/white)... and boss souls... and where to get armour... and how to upgrade them... etc.

I'm glad to hear you're giving it another go. Just remember a few things:

1) Don't clutch too tightly to your ego. If you expect the demons to die just because you want them to, they won't; you'll have to work to get There's always something to be learned from defeat trial-and-education is at the core of the game.

2) This game has a soul of its own, and it demands you understand that. Expect the worst, be prepared, and steady your nerves.

3) Clarity. You might hear some characters in-game speak of clarity and the soul, and the gameplay shows why this is important. If you can just forget about your panic, keep from button-mashing, and consider your every action, you will come out on top in the end.

4) Never give up. I know it's a cliché, but it's the serious times that we've prepared the clichés for! :)
