I have been contemplating getting a twitter account recently. I haven't cared much about Twitter before, but after seeing it as part of a job interview on the Penny Arcade TV show it got me thinking that it might be expected of people now.

Is it a good idea to set up a Twitter account even though nobody might read it? Has Twitter gotten to the point where people who don't have one are considered behind or even technologically incapable?

If you can't think of a good reason to set one up, you probably don't need one.

You can read most of the inane chatter on the site without having your own account :)

just no.

Twitter is a very simple and basic way of communicating. but generaly it's a social gimmick. i'd say 999/1000 twitter accounts have nothing usefull to say to the average user ( if not more ).

in fact, there's a good chance that you put something there your gona regret ( people have been fired for posting certain things on social sites ).

all in all, you never truly need twitter, there's plenty of other mediums that allow you to express yourself if you so require.

another nice fact, im an IT guy ( you know, computer geek ). none of my colleges or friends use twitter, and it's our job to understand and use todays technology.

I got a Twitter account because I'm in art and design and networking is really important for me.
But I'm still so rubbish at promoting myself I have barely any followers so that's not worked out too well...

Apart from that, though, it provides quite a useful information platform if you follow the right people. I follow a lot of illustrators, design studios, Steampunks, bookshops, magazines, etc. I'll scroll down my feed and see a handful of tweets relevant to my interests, linking me to cool pictures and articles and the like.

Long story short, if you're looking for a place to advertise yourself it can be useful if you're persistent with trying to get followers. If not, just make sure you follow profiles that have something interesting to say and you'll still get something out of it.
Either way, it's more public than Facebook, so don't use it to moan a lot or say bad things about yourself because people (including prospective employees) will see.
