Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were -- are -- genre-defining masterpieces. You're allowed to not like them, but to never play them is a crime.

You should check them out JUST to witness a piece of gaming history. Both of them are still fun to play in their own way and you can't go wrong with the atmosphere.

Yes, yes you absolutely should. The Half-Life series is one of the greatest gaming franchises ever created, and you will love every second that you spend with it. Personally I don't understand what people are talking about when they say that the games haven't aged well: Half-Life 2 still looks and plays better than most games made nowadays. Heck, Half-Life 1 was made back in the 90s and it still holds up pretty well, so long as you can get past the graphics. So yes, you should definitely play them.

As for where you should start, I would say that you should probably start with Half-Life 1. You'll need to ignore the dated graphics (or play the new mod, Black Mesa), but I feel that playing it is vital to fully appreciating the story of the series. You can probably get away with starting at Half-Life 2, but I would still try the first one if you can.

I'm still not sure what the hell Gordon actually did in the first game besides not die.
In Half-Life:

1. Freeman activates the dimensional portal. His hand is the one that throws the switch. For better or worse, he pulls humanity into a new era.
2. Fights the alien army essentially by himself.
3. Freeman destroys Nihilanth, the nigh-invulnerable leader of the invaders, decapitating the alien offensive and removing, at least temporarily, their ability to come to Earth.
4. Disappears without apparent trace (actually taken away by the mysterious G-Man).

In the years between Half-Life and Half-Life 2:

1. Freeman is held in extra-temporal cold storage by the G-Man.
2. While he is gone, the Combine (the force indirectly responsible for the Nihilanth's invasion in the original Half-Life) attacks Earth in force, quickly crushing all serious resistance and putting the humans firmly under its thumb.
3. Due to Freeman's actions in the first game, a legend develops, turning him into a messianic figure, a warrior savior. As the Combine tightens its vise grip, the oppressed human population hopes he will miraculously save them yet again.

Thus, when Freeman is released into City 17 at the beginning of Half-Life 2, the Combine is already firmly in charge, and the Resistance recognizes Freeman, wishing him to be the hero they've imagined.

I'm not sure you guys are playing the same Half-Life that I am. The way I see it, the rest of the FPS industry still has yet to keep up with this single nearly-15-year-old game. And Half-Life 2 seems like it got a 2052 release, or something. These games are extremely ahead of their time. Like... way extreme.

Anyway, I would certainly recommend it. The games are very fun to play, and have some very impressive and detailed lore. Plus, the technology in Half-Life 2 is going to melt your eyes. 'Nuff said.
