Should Metroid Other M get a redo?

OK, so after watching Extra Credits episode on Other M it came to me that maybe Nintendo could give Other M another try. I really liked the core story of the game, but to me it felt like it was held down by horrible dialogue and some questionable gameplay choices (ie focus instead of energy pickups, no nunchuk etc). Basically, Other M felt like a lot of wasted potential. I like the core storyline of the game, ie give samus a bit of character and bridge the gap between fusion and Super Metroid, but the game itself sucked.

So, does the Escapist think that Nintendo should try Other M again? Not just a remake, but a completely new game but with the same basic story? I think they wasted a lot of potential there, and it's a pretty big blemish on an otherwise flawless series.

No matter what the answer to this question is, you'll get the same result.

People will complain.

I personally say just take the loss and move on.

No.
It's a slap in the face for the developers to simply say that they didn't do the job well enough, and that others could do it better - They ARE doing it better, that's the reason they were hired.
Instead one could make another game in the franchise, use the mistakes learned in the previous failure and mold it accordingly.

Having played Metroid Fusion, the actual sequel to Super Metroid, the story of Other M wasn't all that good. It apparently gives Samus amnesia, since she gets shocked twice about the Federation growing Metroids, and at the same time explains about the Adam character whose brain we only meet in Fusion and never comes up again.

Basically, the story of Other M is just a huge tangled mess that is completely unnecessary and blatantly ridiculous. Shoehorning in new stuff in between pre-existing content usually is.

Thank you!

I love the Metroid series, and frankly I think that a new Metroid game should be created and that the devolopers not make the same or similiar mistakes that Other M made.

Honestly, I'd rather the original Other M script, the one written by Team Ninja, not the Nintendo hire.

Scuttlebutt has it that while the original TN had a lot more TA in it (bu-dum-tish), Samus as a character was a lot closer to ass-kicking badass we all knew her to be, rather than the obedient pansy she was in Other M.

I'd rather just move on than dwell on something like this. I like what they did with Zero Mission, but to be honest, they might as well just make a new game and not make it like Other M.

No.

I would rather this shameful part of the Metroid series be about how they made her into a whiny, emotionless dog than a whore. Samus was one of the heroines I looked up to growing up. A strong, independent woman that kicked ass without needing to be overtly sexualized. And while she has been gradually more and more sexualized as time wears on, I do not want the fleshed-out character of her to just be something for men to ogle.

Fix Other M, or just pretend it never existed. But do NOT allow her to become nothing more than a pair of tits.

This. The solution to bad writing is not a different kind of bad writing.

Hollywood has been going in this direction for just over a decade, with mixed results. Games aren't quite there yet. I think that Nintendo will more than likely just try to forget about Other: M as soon as they can produce something to supplant it. I'd like to see a mix of first and third person gameplay, and I created a thread about how many months ago. But I'd settle for another Prime game, and in the past 14 or so months one of the big shots at Retro said he'd be delighted to do it if Nintendo approached him. I think that's the most likely candidate for what we'll see next out of Metroid. And I'm totally cool with retconning Other M out of existence, but I doubt they will and I'm also fine with that. Besides, having higher ups within the precious Federation going dirty with bio engineering? I'm game! I'd like to see more intrigue, espionage and zero-suit stealth in a Metroid game. Just one without 1,000 unacceptable bugs and the reversal of two decades of character expectations.

EDIT: Also, the music was absolutely beautiful.

No.

I'd like to keep on pretending that Other M didn't exist. I fear that if that gets a redo it's just going to get even more ugly from there and I really don't want developers to take that kind of a risk if that ever gets brought up.

Yes, please grant her plurality, or at the very least, omnipressence. :p

If you replace bad writing with bad writing, you still end up with bad writing :) See also: that Extra Credits episode on female characters.

It'd be a step in a more empowering direction either way!
