Should Modern Warfare (and other similar 'Modern-age' FPS's) have playable female characters?

As previously mentioned. Many countries don't let women on the front line.

Also, even if they did, correct me if I'm wrong but don't you play as mostly SAS/Delta Force/Navy SEAL type people? I don't think there are many any women in the special forces.

I think that for story purposes it makes sense for women to be omitted as playable characters, but then you come across the fact that all the civilians are men, as well. How can a game with such a massive budget not be able to afford some female animation modeling?

As for multiplayer, considering the fact that it has fuck all to do with the story other than the team names, I think that it should be possible to play as a woman. Same goes for Spec Ops and Nazi Zombies.

No, I don't think it's a good idea. In fact, being a massive misogynist, if I were in a position to do so, I'd ban women from the military entirely. (Actually, by this point, I probably hate women enough to ban them from a lot of other things as well.)
But... if you hate them, wouldn't you WANT them on the front lines?

Ahahahahaha oh my god what? I can't tell if trolling or...

Anyways, not really because women actually aren't allowed on the frontlines for some reason that doesn't occur to me.

There is a playable female character in Call of the Dead, Sarah Michelle Gellar as a matter of fact.

Also, Call of Duty: Finest Hour has a playale female character in the campaign, Tanya Pavelovna in the Russian campaign.

However, I do agree that in multiplayer there should be a female option.

Considering the questionable approach that the games take towards accurately depicting the U.S. military, I wouldn't be surprised to see a female protagonist despite whatever the policy actually is. Hell, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Incredible Hulk serving on the front lines in the next game.
You might be on to a winning idea there.

I don't see why not. I think Modern warfare kind of dumped realism when they let single soldiers call in a NUKE for killing 25 enemy soldiers without dying.

I mean, MGS4 let you be a female character online. Sure it's 3rd person, but from a character customization aspect it should still let you choose.
No, the singleplayer and multiplayer are seperate in terms of realism, singleplayer is the realistic part of MW2 (obviously not the story in terms of U.S. getting invaded and all that) but you play as a member of the Army Rangers and if that situation did happen thats realistically what you as a Ranger would do to fight an invasion, multiplayer is and never was meant for realism, so while it wouldn't matter if there were females online, in singleplayer it wouldn't make any sense.

That's what I was talking about. Hence referencing Metal Gear online.
Even in the main story though, who cares? It's fiction, a small creative liberty like that is no big deal at all.

I see no harm in it.

I think it would be a nice change of pace to play as a female player. Of course, you're going to see oodles of sexism following the decision.

Look if it is modern day semi realistic warfare then it is going to be realistically few and far between. Read http://www.military.com/news/article/female-special-operators-now-in-combat.html

Along with psyops mos, Civil affairs and thats just about it. Combat arms jobs in the US military have been locked for females. They now are only allowing them for specific psyops reasons to influence the local populace.

All that bull shit from Battle LA where some Airforce chick just becomes a bad ass even though she was probably a firggin POG and hasent seen a range since her crappy basic at Lackland.

how many armies have women serving on the front lines or more specifically in special forces teams(which most fps seem to focus on)?

and of those armies that do, how many of them are armies that are playable(US,English etc) in FPS games?

but i dont care as long as its not done wrong, like putting women in the game just for the boobs or something else silly. like be realistic about it.

why bother. Its a FPS
ooh the difference
also as far as i know there aren't any women in either the SAS or rangers/delta. And very few in the normal army anyway

another thing, if you were to put women in you would get more complaints about them being represented unfairly as they need the man to lift the 100kg object

Women DO serve in the military that is correct however they do not serve in the infantry.

They do every other job but never came across any in the front lines during my 12 year service.

Although if i'm totally honest a hell of a lot of women field medics, comms and drivers see just as much shit as some of the infantry regiments do so I will admit I wouldn't be against the idea of them joining as infantry.

Lets be fair, field medics alone see more corpses and shot up folk than some of the front liners do and if they can handle that they can handle pretty much anything.

because camo paint doesn't go well with a bikini and since that's what developers think their customers want we won't be getting ladies in our pseudo-realistic FPSs.
on that note i liked how Killzone 3 did it, just throw in a random named character who is female, without any kind of girly uniform(she wore the standard ISA scout/marksman uniform without the helmet but with the hood) and i think it was never even once mentioned that she is a woman.

Yes, modern shooters should have playable female characters. Of course, if you're going for modern-day realism, keep them out of the infantry (sci-fi has no excuse for this, except to make a political or other meaningful statement: ultimately getting shot hurts, and shooting a gun allows you to hurt others regardless of your gender).

It'd be nice if the lack of women in today's infantry forces became a concept of importance for another game, such as the story of a young woman who wants to join the infantry but ends up in some other difficult situation since she can't.

Certainly I see the idea of women in the infantry becoming a reality some time in the future. Out of necessity, perhaps, if another "total war" comes along, or otherwise out of social advances. It just seems obvious to me that women have just as much to offer as soldiers as men do. Their perceived vulnerabilities are outdated by the flow of modern warfare, which relies so much less on physical strength than it does on accurately firing a gun (and knowing when not to shoot as well).

Even if modern warfare still relied in some way on physical strength (in a way it does still have relevance to the need for carrying equipment and using heavy weapons but that's about it), just look up some female body builders. There are some out there which could bench press more than a trained soldier, and we should really ask ourselves, if they want to serve, why should they be barred from entry into a force?

With all of this said, joining the military means being given the power to potentially stain yourself with terrible acts and possibly put yourself in great danger. There should not be a gender barrier to entry, but everyone should hesitate before signing up to such a thing, and consider if they feel current wars and politics are things that they wish to participate in.

No. Deaths on the front lines don't occur as often for an industrialised society as they did in the past.
"As often" as what, World War II? It might not be as often as times like that, but it's still a really dangerous occupation.

Hating women seems pretty irrational and fearful to me, to be honest. There's some amazing and terrible females out there, and none of them deserve to be painted by the virtues and flaws of the others.
