Yes, modern shooters should have playable female characters. Of course, if you're going for modern-day realism, keep them out of the infantry (sci-fi has no excuse for this, except to make a political or other meaningful statement: ultimately getting shot hurts, and shooting a gun allows you to hurt others regardless of your gender).
It'd be nice if the lack of women in today's infantry forces became a concept of importance for another game, such as the story of a young woman who wants to join the infantry but ends up in some other difficult situation since she can't.
Certainly I see the idea of women in the infantry becoming a reality some time in the future. Out of necessity, perhaps, if another "total war" comes along, or otherwise out of social advances. It just seems obvious to me that women have just as much to offer as soldiers as men do. Their perceived vulnerabilities are outdated by the flow of modern warfare, which relies so much less on physical strength than it does on accurately firing a gun (and knowing when not to shoot as well).
Even if modern warfare still relied in some way on physical strength (in a way it does still have relevance to the need for carrying equipment and using heavy weapons but that's about it), just look up some female body builders. There are some out there which could bench press more than a trained soldier, and we should really ask ourselves, if they want to serve, why should they be barred from entry into a force?
With all of this said, joining the military means being given the power to potentially stain yourself with terrible acts and possibly put yourself in great danger. There should not be a gender barrier to entry, but everyone should hesitate before signing up to such a thing, and consider if they feel current wars and politics are things that they wish to participate in.

No. Deaths on the front lines don't occur as often for an industrialised society as they did in the past.
"As often" as what,
World War II? It might not be as often as times like that, but it's still a really dangerous occupation.
Hating women seems pretty irrational and fearful to me, to be honest. There's some amazing and terrible females out there, and none of them deserve to be painted by the virtues and flaws of the others.
