What in the hell.

Rounding? You cannot even be remotely serious.

... I ... I cannot even fathom the words. I do not want to live on this planet any more, I have lost any shred of hope for humanity I ever could have mustered and any other fitting expression of categorically stunned disbelief.

Im done on this.

In canada we already stopped making the penny and we have glow in the dark dinosaur coins so america abolishing the penny sounds like a good idea.

Is it wrong (or perhaps telling) that I read this thread title as 'Should penises be removed from the currency system?'

Actually, I just read 'should penises be removed...' and thought HELL NO! I like my penis. I don't really ever use it, but still, I'm awfully attached to it.

If you live in the US, chances are you already round. Gas price per gallon is usually precise to the tenth of a cent. And where I am, we already round to the nickel(at the register after totaling the individual items) because no pennies are in circulation(and are not accepted as currency). Somehow society has not collapsed.

Australia removed the 1 and 2 cent pieces years ago... and it didnt really have much of a muchness affect imo you still see the .99 cent things... so in the end i think it wouldnt matter to keep it or remove it.

Well to be fair the rightful Government of the UK (The Official Monster Raving Loony Party) have stated that they will introduce a 99p coin in order to combat this problem and to save on change.

Yes, but it's not going to happen. American people don't think when it comes to Nostalgia and a penny has a lot of nostalgic weight to it. The "Remember when a penny used to buy...." Crowd will actively fight all attempts to remove it from circulation.

Sure, why not? I don't see the problem. Here in norway, we just got rid of the 50-øre (0.5 Crone). Our new base currency is now 1 Crone. And society didn't crash!

If the idea of roundin costs in order to save potentially millions of dollars a year makes you not want to live on this planet anymore you should probably get your head checked. Either that or you're bein sarcastic in which case, my bad.

Aside from that, we already round basically everythin. Anytime somethin doesn't reach a whole number which happens basically all the time due to sales tax it gets rounded, generally up. You ever notice gas prices have a 7/10 or 3/10 after the last digit? Exact prices for gas there yet you've never had to pay a tenth of a cent before.

I can't remember the last time I used cash and even when I did I very rarely used pennies. When I worked at a gas station, often the time customers would either say keep the pennies or would throw them into the Take a Penny Leave a Penny thingy because they didn't want to be bothered carrying the things around.

No way! How am I supposed to troll cashiers (and customers behind me) without them?
This is just a little tidbit but did you know in some places it is illegal to use more than 25 pennies in a transaction? Nobody really cares though.

OT: They already got rid of them in Canada, they are still valid currency but the production was discontinued considering it takes like 8 cents to make a 1 cent coin.

I think pennies are pretty damn useless and you guys have every financial incentive to abolish them. Quite simply I like what we do here in Australia, our lowest coin is 5 cents, and everything gets rounded up or down to meet the 5 cent marker. That way you still have a small coin but it's not AS small or AS useless as a single god damn cent.

Edit: Also, while you're at it, include your sales tax on the cost labels. Seriously, when I visited America this practice absolutely baffled me. The ONLY reason I can see this being done is to give the illusion I was paying less, which I'm obviously not. Not just that, but it means I couldn't prepare my change before I reached the counter. It's a stupid practice that you need to fix, less I almost pull my hair out because of your absurd business practices like I almost did last time.
Eh, the tax thing isn't that big of deal when you grow up with it here. Ya just kind of know going in theres going to be tax.

I suppose the real reason for not doing it is so that the shops can say "Hey man, it's not me, it's this god damn federal government."

Scars I purposely am not quoting for your attention because the sarcasm and venom of my preceding statement is not directed at you or any one individual rather at the astounding short sightedness illustrated by the effect one little penny can make. Only using your words as the structure for what I am about to say. nothing more.

Somehow society has not collapsed.
Really? Oh thank god.

I was afraid seeing people rioting in the streets, extensive protest rallies with kids with neck beards and masks, molotov mobs in Greece and Ireland, Even more poor people being starved out in favor of financial greed, threats of EU falling apart threatening a global economic conundrum were actually real for a moment. Nope the world is just hunky dory and assuredly my exacerbation could not possibly have anything to do with people not comprehending the value of ownership, exchanging money for nothing in return and allowing EVERYONE to be slowly overcharged over time allowing other people to manipulate apathy for profit.

That is my awe.. the fact that people have the audacity to be upset how the economic structure is collapsing into a societal problem, when they willingly trade money for absolutely nothing, and allow people charge them more than the value of an item because a smaller figure is too much to be bothered with that helps grow the sort of environment that causes all these economic woes.

If people as a whole over the course of the last 100 years would have paid more attention to their money and property and held the collective vigilance to call bullshit when it occurs we would not be in the mess we are in today. Were in the mess we are in because we allowed shit like this to not only occur but to go unpunished. Just like a child, when you fail to use the appropriately required level of discipline to stop the negative behavior it is nothing more than giving them the license to do it again but worse.

This time I am done. All future quotes on this will out of respect for the community be ignored and I will not be back on the forum until I am able to let the rage this has incited go.

No, and I'll tell you why. Because then they'd have to redesign the price system to be multiples of five, since we no longer have one cent pieces. On top of that, sales tax in Pennsylvania is 6%. If the penny were removed, they would have to drop it to 5% or raise it to 10%. Now tell me, which direction do you think seems more likely?
