Should Rockstar make a sandbox game... with Zombies in it?

Dead Rising was fun. It was REALLY fun. Until it came to the story, then it fell apart. This was because the many bosses all had ways to insta-kill you by stun-locking you in certain corners of their arenas... I can't remember how many times I had to restart because i couldn't get up after they knocked me down with their knife/cleaver/sword/chainsaw/shotgun (cletus was my worst nightmare)

it wasn't until i unlocked infinite mode, the laser sword, and the megablaster that the story mode became fun. Because i got to take my revenge on all the bosses by insta-killing THEM with these mega-weapons.

but i digress because i was watching my brother play GTA 4 after i just got done playing Red Dead Redemption, and was thinking to myself... what if GTA was set in a zombie apocalypse?

I don't mean literally, but i mean, what if there was a big city, with varied environments LIKE Liberty City or San Andreas, with some vast, open areas like in RDR, and done realistically beautiful like Red Dead or Mass Effect 2, but with a REALLY gory engine that allows for "over-the-top" violence like the severing of limbs and the chopping up of bodies (like the gore effects in Left 4 Dead 2) with melee weapons and guns.

But i want it to have the "feel" of a "toy"box like how Yahtzee described Red Dead Redemption, a bunch of things you can mess around with. Like how in Red Dead had a bunch of random events where you'd see someone getting robbed or about to get killed and you could choose to help them or not. That'd be SO fun to me if it could be like that and have some sort of "morality" system. Or if you could even choose to play as a zombie (like some lord of undead or something and you have to unite the horde under your control)

Ive thought of a bunch of gameplay ideas, but they're not really fleshed out, and i can't exactly MAKE the game since im one man and dont own any 3D rendering software (nor would i know how to use it if i DID have it anyways :p) or even an engine i can build all this off of :(

well, i just wanna know if it seems like a good idea, i know there are a MILLION sandbox games out there, and there already is a sandbox zombie game (and an upcoming one), but i think this would be much better than anything Dead Rising promises (even though i pre-ordered it and im gonna buy it and everything :p)

I have heard that Rockstar are releasing a DLC pack for Red Dead Redemption focussed on zombies, so there's that.

And truth be told, I would be with you 100% if it were not for the pissants that run the Australian ratings board, meaning if such an epic, awesome, legendary game were to come to fruition, I'd never get to play it because it would be banned in this stupid country.

As much as I'd like to believe Dead Rising 2 could bring this sort of thing to us, the fact that it puts a time limit on you to reach endgame kills it for me. A free-roaming, no limits zombie game is what we need.

I missed the part where Dead Rising was fun, which is a shame because I tried REALLY hard to enjoy that game. I don't know, just something about the way the game handled really put me off. The controls felt clunky and delayed, I didn't like how small the text was (yes, I know that problem was fixed, but it still shouldn't have been that bad from the beginning), and the way Frank West moved/attacked really annoyed me. Though I do really like Frank West as a character, oddly enough.

I understand how others can like it, but for me, the flaws were too apparent to get any kind of true satisfaction out of it. I am going to give the sequel a shot though.

Rockstar also hasn't impressed me much, quite honestly. I hated Grand Theft Auto 4, and as much as I loved Red Dead Revolver, I just couldn't get into Red Dead Redemption.

So if Rockstar made a true zombie game (not just RDR zombie DLC), would I play it? Yeah, I'd give it a shot. But I don't think I'd buy it unless it was just radically different from the other stuff Rockstar is putting out lately, which has proven successful for them, so I'm not holding out on them switching it up too much.

So all in all, should they make a zombie game? Sure. Why not? It'd probably make them a ton of money that would just look great with all the rest of that money GTA4 and RDR made.

Probably not, I've never been a fan of Rockstar's open world games. I liked Oni way more.

Yes. Simply yes. They NEED to make one. Simply because their engine would be perfect for it.

There were a few failed mods on PC... Christ, I wish they'd panned out.

NO.

They already made Manhunt. That was NOT a good game.
Difference between Manhunt, and what this threads about.

OT:
Hell, I'd pre-order that. Online co-op would make it a definatley suberp experience.

I don't think zombies really work in a wide open environment. They're too slow and stupid. You'd either have to change them such that they're not zombies any more, or you have to set your game in confined spaces.

I mean remember Prototype? That had loads of zombies in the city, but they were treated appropriately, as chaff that you mince through at a hilarious rate in whatever way you like.
