Don't their estates bring in £200 million of revenue p/a for the government or something? And that's without tourism.

And the royal family is so fun to mock. Not the Queen, obviously, but the rest of them are such easy targets to elicit levity. They also play an important diplomatic role.

I would be unhappy to see them go.

I have learned something new today.

And now I will regurgitate those facts as if they were my own!

Get rid of them. I am aware of the financial reasons for keeping them but I think this is outweighed by what is state sanctioned legitimisation of nepotism.

I don't see why. They have no real power anymore and they just take up space. If they still had an actual monarchy where the king or queen made the decisions, like in the medieval days, then yes. But now they have a prime minister, so the royal family is rather redundant now.

We should replace them with the Royle family, at least Jim knows the football formation of the Gods.

I loathe them and hate being a "subject". I find the tourism argument nonsensical - very few tourists actually SEE them, the castles and the crown jewels etc will remain whether we have them or not.

Screw them. I won't bow or grovel to them and I won't sing our sodding national anthem.
I'm with this guy, in contemperorary multi-cultural Britain they are outdated, irrelevant and bare the least bit of resemblance to our modern national identity. I'm not so obsequious that I'm going to pay any modicum of veneration to someone just because of the fucking family they are born into. Their supposed role as a diplomat essentially entails merely making an appearance and when they do have interact with people it just involves a lot of plastic smiles and handshaking, something that could just as easily be accomplished with a mannequin draped in jewelry. So yeah, get rid of them and don't look back I'd say.

Yes, the Royal Family should be in front of a firing squad.
Why?

The magical fucking "Royal Wedding" that clogged every station for a solid month and a half for some peasant broad and softy prince. I don't care, keep the Queen, but apparently 60% of Britain must be royalty in some way by how many Dukes and Earls and Princes there are.

I love having a monarchy. It's something that represents the nation and it adds to a nation's personality. I don't think it should be in control, I like the system we've got at the moment

That was very interesting. Thank you for posting that.
no problem! It's what I do!
I'll admit, when I first entered this thread I was thinking "well, I think it's nice to have a royal family (we have one here in Sweden as well) but I don't think there's any way to defend having one."

And then you came along and proved me wrong. Kudos, my dear sir. Kudos.

They are rich and famous simply for being born. Wow, good job buddy! Overall, I understand the cultural aspect of tourism they might bring to the table. However, for myself and likely many others, they wouldn't be the main factor for me. The buildings themselves are what would catch my eye and get me to spend money there, not some privileged rich folk.

The monarchy has no real power, the queeny signs a load of shit that comes through parliament and if she said no then they'd remove her.. anyway they're great for dealing with other royal families who don't like sleazy, common diplomats.. also they represent the nation much better than the parliamentarians do..

The only thing I'd do is make them pay for their own estate with their own estate.. which is huge so they can pay for it themselves but otherwise I say they stay.. i do not want to see a president of the UK, they'd probably be end up having to be Welsh, Scottish, Irish and several other ethnicities all in one.. it could cause problems..

I don't see why not. it gives us some vague sense of national pride, and probably actually makes us money from the tourism and things it brings

basically, what dex-dex posted

Except you haven't. Every time I see that bloody video I really wish someone would post the response to it. So here it is:

And the financials aren't the point anyway! I would much rather sacrifice the money they [don't actually] make and live in a proper democracy with an elected house of Lords, separation of church and state, no more Lords Templar etc etc etc.

The tourism thing is nonsense as well. If we turfed the Royals out of Buckingham Palace and Windsor, and opened up the stunning royal collections of art that for some reason no one is allowed to see, we'd make a fortune.

Happily I think it won't take too many years of King Charles to convince everyone to get rid of them.
