Should the UK have a Royal Family?

The Royal family are part of British culture, they provide a diplomatic route to problems, bring in money from tourism and other such benefits. America would KILL to have a royal family. Did you see how insane THEY went for the Royal Wedding? More so than here than the UK. But the US can't have a Royal family, so they treat those they elect (the president) like royalty instead...

More on topic, the royal family should stay. As I said they're part of British culture it would be a shame to see that part of our heritage to go.

The only Royal I ever respected was Princess Diana, and even then only because she was the best of a terrible bunch. And they fucking had her killed because of it, didn't they.

They bring tourist money. Simple as. Way more than they're spending.
This argument simply does not wash. They do not bring in tourist money. Their houses bring in tourist money.

If they didn't live in them anymore, then we could open up all of their estates in their entirety to the public and make even more money from tourism.

Imagine if you could go and walk through pretty much any room of Buckingham Palace any time you wanted, if it was opened up as a museum. It would surely still rake in the money, probably more than it does now.

More importantly I don't think we should have a monarchy because the very concept itself is disgusting, this is supposed to be the 21st century and we still have kings and queens, come on! How can we ever hope to have true equality whilst there is still a nobility?
Erm, what?

The very reason the royal family brings in so much money is because the family still lives there.

Old Lizzy seems like a nice old lady. But all of her relatives seem to be either racist or pompous twats. It will be a shame when she goes and I have a feeling that the Royal Family might not be as much liked then as it is now.

Royalty is a useless leftover from the dark ages and has no place in a modern country. It's the same here in sweden. As for adding to the personality of the place, the reality is overpowering them anyway, chav's over there, bloody meatballs over here.

Do they preform any function in government anymore? If they don't then I don't see any reason they need to exist anymore. There more political nonsense associated with this obviously since nobody has done anything but I'm just looking from a practical point of view.

if buckingham palace was opened up as a museum it would rake in money, but it would still be owned by the windsors. the money wouldnt go to the country. and the whole appeal is 'this is where the king/queen lives' not 'look its a bigass house with fancy shit.' and if they werent in power they would probably say 'well you lot can fuck off, this is our house.'
just like all the castles that everyone goes to. they own them. and they can say 'we would let you in but now we're just people who have a fuckload of money.'

Yes, the Royal Family should be in front of a firing squad.
Why?

The magical fucking "Royal Wedding" that clogged every station for a solid month and a half for some peasant broad and softy prince. I don't care, keep the Queen, but apparently 60% of Britain must be royalty in some way by how many Dukes and Earls and Princes there are.
well considering they mostly fucked their cousins centuries ago... no. plus, that royal wedding was between a middle-class woman and a soldier. the difference was he just happened to be a prince and it happened to be televised. if they hadnt done that, nobody would even talk about it because it was two people getting married.

I'm Irish so I have a strong distaste for them.

That said they have an economic value and they are a British institution at this point. People like to see famous people, think of how people boast about seeing a celebrity, the royal family is that witha history.

Still think they are a bunch of inbred though.

I'd like to keep them. This is relevant:
I think it benifits us to have a monarchy, the question is, why should this particular family get all that just for being born into it? I also think if any family is gonna be making money for us n shit, it might as well be the head of the largest religion in the UK. I'm a protestant Christian but not Church Of England, however it's all gooood. Well, not all of it, but Church Of England are alright.
ANYWHOO, yeah, keep em! Plus they give the tabloids something to chat about :)

...As much as I hate to say this, having the royal family is the lesser evil. Sure, I don't like how much money the royal family gets inherently, but then again, they bring in more money than they use. But it doesn't stop me crossing my arms, stamping my feet and putting on a dissatisfied face.

Yeah, really the monarchy in today's society are just extremely rich and generous celebrities. I mean, it would be unfair to keep them if they had political power, but they don't. Basically if Bill Gates children gave the British government tons of money each year, no-one would call for them to have their money sapped, but there is fundamentally no difference between them and the royal family in that scenario.
It's the fact that BIll Gates added to society and earned his money (leaving aside fairness of how much he earned), while the royal family were born into it.
Well, the monarchy did get that money at some point. I mean, first they had to conquer Britain in order to rule, in times gone past. Secondly when they ruled absolute they had to make sure not to drive the country into the ground, so really Bill Gates kids get money from their father, the monarchy from their ancestors. No practical difference.
Correction: there's no practical difference between Bill Gate's children and the royal family. Bill Gates, and the royal family when they were OP, earned their money. Bill Gate's children, and the current royal family, do not.

They make more money then they spend and they're not just the UKs royal family. So yes we should have a royal family.
and this is the end of the thread.
their an economic staple. Anything else is purely circumstantial and irrelevant.
Circumstantial is by no means irrelevant. Status is rather circumstantial, but anything but irrelevant. The same goes for perception.

There is an international reverence for "real" nobility at all levels, and that gives the British monarchy political clout that should not be underestimated. Of course that is rather insubstantial, but what are international politics, if not smoke and mirrors?
Even at home they've got a lot of influence. Not power, but influence.

Might I question why the Archbishops (as I assume you are referring to them) or any other primarily christian group should be ones in control? With no offence to anyone, Britain is better off with no religion having any power in this country. And they would have some form of power, politically or otherwise, considering to do this we would basically walk up to them and go "oh hai thar, you can haz many moneyz and represent our country". Let's avoid shitstorms instead of inviting them into our country please.
