Since the Academy Awards is tomorrow, what movies are you rooting for to win and which ones do you think will win.

My Picks:

Best Picture: Should Win: Her - This was the movie that I connected with on all levels. Serious snubs for Best Actor and Best Actress for Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson.

Will Win: Dallas Buyers Club - Gravity is an empty spectacle that will clean up on the technical awards. 12 Years A Slave was well done movie about a serious subject. Yet, I don't know who this movie was for. Who's mind were they trying change about slavery? However, with Dallas Buyers Club, this was a good movie with great acting about a person anyone hardly knew. AIDS is still something that millions of people still have to deal with. That's why it will surprise people who have been picking Gravity & 12 Years a Slave.

Best Director: Should Win: Martin Scorsese - The Wolf of Wall Street was hugely entertaining movie with a lot big set pieces and great acting. Most importantly, this movie is better than The Departed.

Will Win: If Gravity is as ground-breaking as everybody claims than Alfonson Cuaron should win. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Steve McQueen gets it for 12 Years a Slave.

Best Actor: Should Win/Will Win: Matthew McConaunghey. He simply gave a great, subtle performance.

Best Actress: Should Win/Will Win: Cate Blanchett. Honestly, the only movie in this category I saw was American Hustle. Amy Adams was good but she got outshined by Jennifer Lawrence. So, if Cate Blanchett was as good as people say she was, then she should win.

Best Supporting Actor: Should Win/Will Win: Jared Leto. He gave a great, honest portrayal that stood toe to toe with Matthew McConaunghey.

Best Supporting Actress: Should Win/Will Win: Jennifer Lawrence. She stood head and shoulders above the rest of the ensemble cast with an underwritten role. Lupita Nyong'o benefitted from having her character being featured heavily. She didn't really do anything different than anyone else who have played an abused slave.

Best Original Screenplay: Should Win/Will Win: Her. The Academy Awards usually awards the most deserving movie with the Best Screenplay Oscar. This year will be no different.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Should Win/Will Win: 12 Years a Slave. To be fair, I haven't seen Before Midnight. If it's like the first movie, it would have been my Should Win pick. However, I can't deny that 12 Years a Slave was a well-written movie that will deserve any awards given to it.

I don't watch a lot of movies. The only one I saw this year, apart from all of the super hero movies, was Gravity, so I guess I'lll nominate it for all eligible categories.

The only movie I saw in 2013 that's been nominated is Gravity.

So... I vote Gravity. Even in the awards it's not nominated for.

(It's a good movie. A damn good one.)

They should've nominated Ed Harris' voice for Best Supporting Actor.

Or the fire extinguisher. It delivered as good of a performance as Bullock, that's for sure.

Actually the FX department should be nominated for Supporting Actress, for creating the title character and key villain - Gravity.

I think the only movie that actually deserves to win anything is 12 years a slave. But I ofcourse also want there to be a limited amount of Oscars so that nostalgia is taken into account aswell.

Think about it.. what is your own favourite movie of all time?

I didn't even like Gravity, and I haven't seen the other films mentioned.
However Should Win and Will Win are usually really different.

My picks:

Best Picture
Should win: Gravity or Dallas Buyers Club.
Will win: Gravity or 12 Years. Giving Gravity the slight edge on this one as 12 Years's campaigning (something you have to do to win these things) has been non-existent and atrociously shitty.

Best Director
Should win: Cuaron.
Will win: Cuaron.

Best Actor
Should win: Dern.
Will win: McConaughey. Not that I'd be mad if he won. Both he and Dern gave fantastic performances for different reasons.

Best Actress
Should win: Amy Adams.
Will win: Blanchett.

Supporting Actor
Should win: Leto.
Will win: Leto.

Supporting Actress
Should win: June Squibb.
Will win: Lupita N'yongo.

Adapted Screenplay
Should win: Philomena.
Will win: 12 Years a Slave.

Original Screenplay
Should win: Her or Nebraska.
Will win: Her or Nebraska. Most likely Her.

Original Score
Should win: Her.
Will win: Gravity.

I'm almost tempted to watch this year, just because Idina Menzel is performing. Opted not to, I'll just watch it on Youtube tomorrow. But I hope "Let It Go" wins Best Original Song anyway. The only movies I've seen this year were Frozen and Saving Mr. Banks, so no real opinion on most of the categories.

Woo I nailed both supporting actors and both screenplay awards and my should wins for actor and actress. I knew Gravity and 12 Years were going to share director/picture, I just didn't know how.

Well, I saw four things coming this Oscar season:

Frozen wins Best Animated Feature
Gravity takes a good chunk of the awards
Blue Jasmine wins the Best Actress award
12 Years A Slave wins Best Picture

Everything else came with a resounding "meh" or "ok"...

I really hope Gravity doesn't win Best Picture. It was a pretty good film and I can see it deserving to win a lot of technical awards and (maybe) a directing award, but it doesn't deserve a Best Picture. A lot of the writing was pretty crud and I'm not enamoured with the 'she's in a foetal position this means stuff!' business either. I mean they
killed off a character who was 3 days from retirement!
Half of everything was a buddy-cop film In Space!

I guess I mainly want 12 Years a Slave to sweep up most of everything else, although Dallas Buyers Club and Her would be okay too. Jennifer Lawrence was fun in American Hustle (probably the most entertaining thing in it), but she was basically just chewing the scenery so Nyong'o would be a cool win there. In general AH's plot was too all over the place for me to want it to win best picture
