Should you be allowed to hurt/kill kids in video games?

If you think about it, plenty of people in video games kill kids. It's just that they are always the bad guys, and since you're the protaginist you can't do something that evil...

Even if you did just murder an entire family before the kid's eyes, then hump his mother's corpse while stealing everything they ever owned and setting the house on fire.

Also there was one kid in Fable you could kill, the teenage kid from the Hobbe Cave quest. I always charged my bow all the way up the hill then shot the kid for a 1000 damage then kicked his Grandma to death. I love being evil!

I'm sure this answer has been done to death, but that's a VEEERYYYYY slippery slope.

I'm going with yes but only conditionally.

I've been around the world on several combat tours and in that time I have seen no distinctions between Child or man. Kids are just as deadly and adults when given the chance, so in an effort to increase the reality factor in gaming, why not include such an option? Now where I think it's conditional is things like CoD. Well written and well presented however you only engage adults...why is this? The middle eastern world does not share the same ideologies of "Women and Children First" so why should we excluded such a terrible truth from games? If people really want a fell for what combat is like, you should be exposed to all aspects of it, not just the "glamors" parts. Should GTA take this route, I think it would just be a means of shock sales, like there "accidental" inclusion of a sex tape. Just try to tell me that wasn't to increase sales and it did. Killing children in such an inviroment is senseless and tasteless, however put this concept into a more realistic setting, such as modern war, I think you could be onto something.

But that just what I think.....

I don't see why not. There could always be an in-game option turning that sort of thing on and off at worst.

Of course there's that morality issue. Games can only go so far before some people take notice and begin to take their problems to higher authorities, eventually creating a big deal over something players can do in game that happens in real life.

I'm reminded how in the Sims the children are impervious to fire, everyone else and everything else will catch fire and be destroyed but the child will stand there impervious.

Its things like that which are ridiculous in a game that is trying to be serious. Children realistically have no reason to be impervious to things that would destroy anything else.

If the setting calls for it then yes, let the little children get hurt or killed. I'm not suggested that one makes a game where you attack and brutalize children but still so obviously avoiding the issue.

I never understood why acknowledging the possibility of non-invincible children is seen as sacrilegious. In a story line it's fine to have a whole race of people wiped out, but ingame a child can withstand a house falling on them. I believe nothing is off limits if it can be done tastefully.

It'd be alright if the game were going for total realism, but games aren't for that. they are for enjoyment. And if you enjoy killing kids you have some serious mental issues you need checked out.

While I guess it is a developers right to make a game that allows children/youth to be killed, its still dont like it.

But as much as I dislike the idea I do belive it should be allowed.

OT: Violence against children is pointless and sick. And would certainly cause an outrage. So I think i is definitely not necessary.
Didn't cause any outrage in Fallout, Fallout 2, Warcraft 3, etc...
Yeah... right. Ok you won.
But I'm rather certain that if in Fallout 3, if you could kill the kids in the vanilla game( and not just with a mod) by means of head 'splosion, dismemberment and things like this, Bethesda would have faced and army of Jack Thompsons.

It seems unnecessary, I remember Deus Ex where there were a couple of opportunities to blast, hit, stab, and electrocute children but for what its worth its much better to do it to adults and keep a bit of morality. Plus it makes a games rating shoot up this could make it inaccessible for some players.

this is annoying theme. we can maim, murder and in some cases, torture NPC's, but we cant touch kids. those little kids in little lamplight in fallout 3 annoyed me so much, i went into the construction set and turned them off essential- and went back for revenge. yes, afterwards i felt very cold and evil. silly conscience.

In Fallout 3, it was insane how there was a whole town full of children, who openly claimed to be adept in fighting and threatened to "blow you fucking head off" and yet, if you attacked them, they ran away like every other child in the wasteland because children are programmed to be invulnable and flee at the first sign on an enemy.

This retarded concept destroyed any sense of immersion left in Fallout 3 and soberly left me looking at these uncanny valley people with contempt.

I usually don't like to post on threads that have a whopping 8 pages going on, but i'll suck it up to say... why would you want to

If you really, really want to kill children you probably deserve to be put in a crazy house. What if game designers just let you say mean things to them, you could put up with that couldn't you? Unless ofcourse you belonged in a crazy house.

Yes, because most everything should be allowed in games... just not encouraged. I wouldn't be killing kids, but if you can massacre a town, you might as well be allowed to.

well ya, it seems that games try to immerse you to the most of their abilities so that means that if you have a gun and you shoot something in the head, it should die, and in the real world: children die when they are shot among other things,I believe the only real reason besides the moral dilemma that game developers remove that ability is that they would be called sadistic malevolent monsters that have no hearts and kick puppies on a regular basis

Is it really necessary to be able to kill a child in a game? It makes more hassle for the game developers, the retail stores where the games are sold, and the parents who SHOULD be paying attention to what their kids are playing.
Is it really necessary to be able to kill an adult in a game?
Is it really necessary to be able to kill in a game (Pokemon does fine with "fainting")?
Is it really necessary to be playing a game at all?
Is it really necessary to post on a forum asking if you should be able to kill children in video games?

No, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let you legislate any of these away.
The above comment should have ended this thread.
