It has snowed before (just after Thanksgiving and during Halloween) but it hasn't stormed. Last night and this morning it stormed. So with 6 inches of snow on the ground and no plow, I had to drive to work at 5AM.

Anyway, to get to the point of it all, when I arrived at work[footnote]nearly crashing along the way courtesy of people who can't drive speeding around me in low visibility... >:O[/footnote] I was handed the shovel. Four hours of it really makes you sore. Then when I get home after doing errands in the city after work, I get handed the shovel again.

So how does the Escapist get through shovelling? I get so bored I tend to daydream in an effort to forget how miserable I am. It is not my favourite winter activity if you can tell. :p

Anyway, time to wind down with some hot chocolate and some internet. Cheers.

I haven't had to shovel in years on account of living in the city, but when I used to I would just listen to music. Honestly I don't find shoveling that bad, kind of relaxing in its own way. It would be perfect if it wasn't so damn cold when you have to do it.

I wish it was snow here in the Midwest. Here it is, the 2nd of November, and it was almost 70 degrees outside today with a bright sunny sky. After the travesty and pitiful Winter we had last year, I am hoping for some blankets of snow this coming season.

My hope wanes however, as it is already November...

Anyway, when I go out to shovel, I'm generally out there in a t-shirt and jeans, because the physical activity of hauling the snow over my shoulder keeps me warm enough. Plus, I love to be out there in the cold. I always tell my family members if they want the driveway shoveled, put the snow-blower away and give me a shovel: I'll do it for free.

I've not shoveled snow in years, but I feel your pain. I have had to dig way to many small holes lately though. The only thing worse than shoveling or digging is busting concrete with a sledgehammer, talk about a cardio workout.

Luckily it doesn't snow much in South-West England so I've never had to shovel snow before, sounds pretty unpleasant though, I hate the cold >:-(

I tend to just let my mind wander when I have to do something like that. Mind you I live in southwestern BC (Canada) so I don't have to shovel much snow. Rain on the other hand...we've got plenty.

I didn't know they still made a 5am. I assumed it was a programming error in clocks.

I ... I kinda enjoy shoveling. Yes, even when it's 6 inches,We're Canadian. Why are we using inches? I still like it. It's a good workout, I don't mind the cold, and I get to listen to music undisturbed for however long it takes to finish. I'll always do the neighbors' sidewalks if they haven't done them yet, and I'll sometimes do their driveways, too.

Also, I have no idea what's going on with the avatars in this thread...
I know, right? Every time I see Tony's avatar my brain gets stuck. It has a strange, horrifying magnetism to it, like a train wreck.

It is. He's pulling your leg. Even God isn't awake at 5am.

OT: I count scoops. Since I live alone, and don't mind walking a few feet through snow, I do my shovelling 200 scoops at a time. The first 200 makes space for the car. Next time clears the walkway. Next time, path to the shed/oil tank. Breaking up the task helps alleviate back pain.

I rather enjoy it, actually. Not so enjoyable when the freezing rain starts up mid-storm, but persistence has left me with the cleanest driveway in the whole neighborhood.

It's a good workout, too. Especially with freezing rain keeping half of it locked down.

Growing up, shoveling was the bane of my existence. I live(d) in upstate NY by the great lakes, so we get tons and tons of snow. Like, easily 2-3 feet in a day. By the time you were done, snow had already piled up back where you started...

Now I live in the city in an apartment, so I don't gotta shovel shit.

Living in North Carolina, I didn't really expect this to be an issue, but I've had to do it a handful of times. Thankfully not yet this year. I'll either plan strategies for a game I'm excited about playing, or I'll have headphones in. The right tunes can make some tedious stuff somewhat okay to deal with.

The avatars? I'm hoping it's one of those 8000 messages bugs, because I miss mine :3

Living in Australia I have never put a shovel to snow or ice of any variety.

But being an electrician I've done a fair bit of trenching.

Red clay is the bane of my existance; there's nothing like hitting the matic into the ground and not making a dent.

It doesn't snow enough here to make it necessary to use a shovel.
And if it reached even half the height of snow you got, the country would grind to a halt anyway. So shovels are not necessary.
